Appearance Description:Reddish Brown hair, cut short. Brown eyes, lightly tanned skin. Wears older style clothing - black coat, red vest, white button-down, black tie, black slacks - in public. When working, wears a faded pair of jeans and a tank-top.



Personality Description: Nevin is, generally, a pleasant, affable individual who likes to meet new people… and promptly learn everything he can about them. His fascination with non-human races is almost obsessive, and when he meets an individual from a new race he is almost compelled to learn all he can about how their physiology works. On the flip side to his calm, pleasant exterior, or how he acts in the store, when he is actively working on alchemy, Nevin is short, and blunt, to the near point of rudeness.

Active Abilities:


Alchemic Brewing:

Nevin’s primary focus in life, is his alchemy. He uses his innate magic to draw out the potential within ingredients that he is working with, enhancing them beyond what they could naturally provide. In more normal concoctions, this is simply improved qualities for whatever he was making, ie, alcohol is more potent, medicines work better and faster than they used to. But if he is able to use ‘unnatural’ ingredients, that is when his power shines - he can draw out the extra qualities from the ingredients and bring them out in the various tonics, tinctures, and pills that he creates. Most useful when he has time to prepare, and knowledge of what he’s trying to affect.

As Nevin is still getting used to Manta Carlos and its far wider variety of magical plants and animals for parts, his alchemy is still in a somewhat 'growing' state. As of right now, all but the simplest healing potions and salves are 'special order' products - things that he has to make virtually on the spot, and which have a rather limited shelf life. While he is sure he can increase the longevity at some point - as for now, he just does not have the skill or experience to do so. He is in the process of working on this though, and for some brews, he dedicates a considerable amount of time and effort to the brew - these rarer, more devoted creations last a bit longer, but their effects are, for now, limited.
Creations made over the course of more than a day, or with special attention to detail, can provisionally last more than a day, but these will be simple things. The more exotic potions will have highly limited shelf lives - no suddenly whipping out an invisibility potion from a month ago.


Alchemic Imbuement:

A sibling power to the Alchemic Brewing power, Nevin is able to ‘imbue’ qualities from a given substance into another object. The effects of imbued objects tend to be less immediately effective than a potion or pill would be, but on the other hand, they also last far longer. [The difference between an immediate heal, and a lesser heal over time effect, for example]. The downside is that he can only imbue objects that are of a certain quality, or durability - no cheap plastic trinket can contain an imbued power, which means that they end up being more costly. Tied into the imbueing process, Nevin can also ‘bind’ an object to a person, so that it works best/only for them - this step in the procedure is used less often, as binding an object to someone requires a sample of the prospective owner’s blood.


Hydro-Magic

To a limited degree, Nevin can work water-based magics, primarily affecting the temperature or density of water. He can only affect a standard pot’s worth of water normally ,and only within a few feet of his body. He uses this primarily to help with his alchemy.




Passive Abilities:


Eidectic Magical Memory:

After years of brewing and experimentation, Nevin can recall magical qualities and properties of anything he has worked with. As such, he can easily figure out a mixture to give a desired result, or to affect various species with ease. Additionally, this extends to an understanding of poisons and antidotes, especially those that are magical in nature.


Experimental Resistance:

Despite the name, this is not an ‘experimental’ state. Rather, it is a result of various experiments that Nevin has tried on himself over the years, which has affected him. Poisons are less likely to affect him in the first place, and he has a heightened chance of recovering from them without aid.


Iron Stomach of the Experimenter:

One of the most dangerous ways to learn about what qualities a substance has, is to eat it yourself. Nevin has long been a practictioner of this method, and after many near misses, has developed something of a high tolerance for them. He can safely consume a small quantity of an unknown substance without harm, and when he does, he randomly identifies one of the qualities that the substance contains that can be used in alchemy. He cannot do this more than once in a day, or the unnatural resistance he has built up will be overwhelmed, and he will suffer the adverse effects of both the thing that pushed him over the edge, and the first substance he consumed that day.

Engrained Linguist:
Inspired by fantasy and fandoms surrounding some popular works of literature, Nevin manged to brute force create a 'lozenge' that temporarily gifts a speaker with another person's language. These lozenges were among the rarest of the things he created before coming to Manta Carlos - not only did they require unusual magical ingredients, but they also required the 'breath of the spoken word', or alternatively, a sample of saliva from the speaker of a given language. Neither easy to come by, bu over time Nevin managed to catch enough 'breaths' to learn several languages from around the globe. Due to repeated use of his Language Lozenges, Nevin has become a near-native speaker of most of the dominant languages of the world.


Weaknesses:

Heightened Dehydration:

Due to a weird quirk of his alchemy experiments, Nevin must stay constantly hydrated, or begin rapidly feeling ill, to the point of collapse. His body dehydrates at roughly three times the rate of a normal human being. If he doesn’t drink at least two glasses worth of water (sixteen to twenty ounces) of water in a two hour period, he begins feeling extremely nauseous, and if he does not drink within another hour, he will likely collapse from dehydration and deteriorate from that point. Nevin has learned to cope with this aggravating disability - copious drinking, both of water and other primarily hydrating drinks - juices and the like - helps. To handle the issue that would have arisen during a rest period, he now downs a large amount of water before going to sleep, and even then only sleeps for roughly four hours. While unconscious the advanced dehydration slows down, which gives him some semblance of normalcy during his sleep, even if his normal sleep period is truncated compared to the norm.

Biography:

Nevin was born in a rural region of the southern US - beyond that, geography wasn’t his strong suit, so he has long since forgotten where that was. He grew up in a family that believed heavily in ‘alternative’ medicine, so from a young age he was inundated with information. It never seemed to sit quite right with him, but he listened to his family as they made him practice making things.

When he started making products to sell in the family shop, it was soon realized by his parents that the things that he made was actually effective - or, as they saw it, more effective. Over time, this transitioned into them having him make everything that their small store would sell - a state of affairs that rapidly overwhelmed the young teen at the time. His only escape was to delve into fantasy and science fiction, and he devoured these things at a rapid rate. He became fascinated with two aspects - the various races, and the art of alchemy. With a new focus, he went wild in making things, rapidly branching out into bizarre and esoteric things.

This might have been the end of it - if he hadn’t stumbled across a wild plant growing, that he didn’t recognize. At this point, he had studied all of the plants native. Curious, he took it home to experiment with - and fell face first into the fact that magic exists in the real world. He rapidly spiralled out of control from here - from his first magical plant, he soon began discovering others - always rare, always isolated, but each one drove him onwards for more and more. Life outside of his work was largely ignored - he tested out of high school and left it behind.


Eventually, the rare ‘true’ potions he would make and sell through his family’s store, drew attention. The worst kind of attention. He was dragged into an ‘underground’ world, where his talent for using bizarre substances to make powerful drugs was used, and abused. He was here for a couple years, until he managed to escape. Now, Nevin dislikes talking about his earliest foray into the underbelly of society. After his escape from the first group, he traveled far and wide, experimenting and searching for more proof - until this point, he had only found extremely rare magical plants, and a few isolated magical animals.


It took time, years of time, to find the Isles. This new place was simply wondrous to Nevin, and he fell into a frenzy of experimenting - safely, focusing his experiments upon himself, or the occasional rare volunteer. He has, over time, managed to settle himself in, abiding for the most part by the Isle’s laws - he is still experimenting on making new substances, and the far greater availability of substances here has expanded his options. And his experiments sometimes make stable products that don’t quite meet the public eye’s good opinion.



Resources:

Small garden that grows common herbs and plants, and some of the more commonplace magical ones as well. He has a house/shop combo, with an alchemy lab in the basement - these were purchased with funds from his travel and products, and he is looking to set up a more proper shop here on Manta Carlos.

Physical Quirks: Often drums fingers against one thigh when he's thinking, has an uncanny habit to stare unblinking at something that interests him while he processes.

Reputation: Nevin is a new arrival to Manta Carlos, so some who live in the city might recognize him having seen him wandering around, but he hasn't made big waves so far.
