Mystery Meat Day

Bobby groaned as he stared at the brown, slimy, inch-thick hunk of - whatever that was - staring back at him from the blue plastic lunch tray before him; why did the first of the month always have to be Mystery Meat Day? Why not 'Actual Meat Day - As In The Kind That Came From An Animal'? Or 'Choose Your Own Meal Day - Free McDonalds For Everyone'? Or even 'Dried Fruit Day'? He liked dried fruit, so he'd settle for that. But this? This wasn't just disgusting. It was stomach-churning. He wasn't even sure an animal had been involved - willingly or otherwise. Now he knew why his mother had been a vegetarian.

The mashed potatoes and gravy weren't bad, though, and neither was the beer-battered roll; there was something that got him about that - how could they serve beer-battered rolls in a country where you had to be twenty-one years of age to drink beer? He'd never understood that, and he was born in the United States (nevermind the Irish in his blood, nor the Irish in his voice).

Stephanie walked toward a table, where she saw a boy nervously eying his food. "Never had mystery meat huh?" she smiled.

"Not sure I want to, either. I'd much prefer a large leg o' roasted lamb chops an' corn on the cob. Not sure this is even meat," he replied as he looked up, his Irish accent moving as fluidly as violin music. He saw the girl was very pretty, ranking right up there with Skye, but he didn't say anything - yet; he did give a lopsided grin, though. "Name's Bobby; an' you?"

"Haha, I'm a vegetarian, so I dont even have to worry. yes, I know, I'm crazy..but still...." she smiled. Why was this guy looking at her like he was her boyfriend or something.."Well, err,try it, maybe its good!" she smiled. "My name is Stephanie", nice to meet you!"

"Aye, an' nice to meet such a pretty lass as yourself." He grinned and winked. "You're welcome ta sit down, if ye like. An' yea, I know what that's like - my mother was a vegetarian." As he spoke, he realized he shouldn't have; thinking about his parents - that was something he just didn't do. It always brought a pang of sadness to him, and he always ignored it - but, it was there regardless.

((No response to the flirting, eh? ;) ))

"Aye, their pizza's not half bad; at least it has meat on it. I live for meat, ya understand; get me the greasiest burger around with everythin' on it, an' I'm happy." He chuckled, then dug into his mashed potatoes.

"oh..well, maybe you should thinmk about the poor animals being killed." she blushed. She hated talking about vegitarianism.

Bobby shrugged. "Eh - it's been happenin' since the beginnin' o' time. We hunt to eat - 'cept for you, o' course, and other veggies. No offense." He smiled. He didn't want to offend her right off the bat, after all, but he'd always called people like her veggies.
