Muted Silence

She didn't like being cooped up inside a school. She wasn't used to the heat, the large groups of people, everybody laughing, talking loudly. In the city, everything just seemed to mute it's self out. Almost as soon as they'd entered the building, Fishi had ran outside, in sheer terror, and had kept on running until her feet brought her here.

The four-year-old now stood in the center of several trees, staring up at the sky, apparently unfazed by the cold, huddled in her frayed, oversized jacket, feeling very afraid of the large space. It was too quiet. And there were no people. The situation was too much like the one tucked deep into her mind. She shifted her feet, looking around with her dull brown eyes. Her hand began to glow as she called for Lune through her head. 'Luna..I'm scared..' Her mental voice was small, and frightened, though she was surrounded by nothing but trees. She sent a mental image of where she was to Lune, then sat down, hand slowly returning to it's normal dull redish brown state, and curled her knees to her chest, huddling to feel safe more than to keep warm.

Lune and Lahi had both immediately turned and followed the young girl, but somehow they'd managed to lose her once they'd entered the forest. Feeling the scratchings of the Fishi at her mental barrier, Lune immediately let it down, absorbing her words and the location. Where the petite seventeen year old had stood, a white raven, an astral body was in her place. The body moved to Lahi, wings enlarging to wrap around the young man and an instant later both were gone. Luckily Fishi hadn't been far from where the twins were and so when the raven became Lune's solid body once, she only staggered the slightest bit when changing. Rushing to the huddled form, she gently picked up the girl, murmuring her name first, sitting on the forest floor, she simply held Fishi. Lahi sat beside them, their belongings in the duffel bag on his shoulder.

Fishi sniffled, cuddling herself closer into Lune, clinging to the older girl as though her life depended on it. "I'm sorry I ran away." She whimpered, not sure if she was apologizing to Lune or herself. Tears were running from her dull brown eyes in large droplets, doing a champion job of making Lune's shoulder soggy.

She sniffled a lot, but pulled herself together rather quickly for a four-year-old. After all, when something like that happens almost daily, it's naturally to learn how to overcome it quickly. "I'm scared of inside." she said solemnly, pulling back to look at Lune in the face. She wiped her nose with the back of her hand, sniffling one last time, before cuddling back into Lune's comforting arms.

Lune wiped the tears from Fishi's face with the sleeve of her dark blue over-sized sweater. Her jacket had been given to young girl, a thin black vest taking its place, though the young woman wasn't paying attention to the chill trying to work it's way through her well worn clothes. Instead she was worried about the four year old curled in her arms, she bent forward to briefly kiss white-blond hair, her own multi-colored locks fall forward to briefly shield the small body from view.

"I know you're sorry, but don't worry, you were scared. Next time try not to run though, Lahi and I can protect you. And I know there's a lot more people and noise than we're used to, I don't want to go there either, but you don't want to hurt Lahi's feelings do you? He thinks he's very cool and that if he goes inside, everyone will want to be his friend. If you don't want to go inside, then he'll be afraid that you don't want to go because you know that nobody will like him, you don't want Lahi to cry right? You remember the last time that happened," she tickled the small girl's ribs after her last line, smiling warmly before lifting her head, Fishi free to be seen once more. Lahi, who'd heard every word, was now looking at the girl with the saddest eyes he could muster, sniffling every now and then, trying to make her smile with his over-the-top facial expression.

Fishi sniffled one last time. "No I don't want Lahi to cry." she said in a pathetic voice, which was followed by an almost giggle as she moved her ribs away from Lune's tickling fingers, looking up at Lahi. She smiled a teary smile, and held up her non-snot-covered hand to him. "You don't have to cry, Lahi. Everybody's gonna love you." she nodded very seriously, before breaking into a large smile, her dull brown eyes lighting up for just a moment.

The moment didn't last very long. "But I'm still scared." she added, looking from Lune to Lahi and back.

"Thank you my little Nemo," Lahi's mournful expression shifted to a warm smile as he blew a raspberry in the girl's palm, tapping her on the nose gently afterward. At her admission, Lune gave her a soft squeeze before sitting the four year old up in her lap, back to her face. Lahi then shifted himself so that he was facing the girl, he flopped himself to his stomach in the process, head propped up in his hands, his elbows against the frost forest floor.

"It's ok to be afraid, and it's very brave of you to admit it. Remember that everybody's always a little scared when going to a new place, it's smart to be since you don't know what you're going to find. You have to face your fear though, it's what makes you stronger, and luckily for you, you don't have to face it alone. If you get too scared, just tell us, Luna will hide you, and I'll step on whoever's scaring you. Sometimes it's very good to be tall," his low voice was soothing, his joking smile warm, and the kiss he placed softly on her forehead was comforting. Returning to his own personal space, he opted to sit as opposed to laying down again. While he'd been speaking, Lune had been running her fingers through Fishi's hair, the action as soothing as Lahi's voice. When her twin had finished speaking, she began to french-braid the short locks, pinning the ends of the two plaits to the four year old's head with bobby pins from her pocket.

Fishi took a deep, suddering breath as Lune began to braid her hair. "I guess we have to go back, huh?" she asked seriously, keeping her head completely still for Lune. She relaxed as Lune did her hair, but remained still so that it wouldn't pull.

"How come we're here?" she asked, not quite sure what they were doing at the school anyways. She knew that she wasn't like any normal four-year-old, but it didn't occur to her small mind that there was actually a school to teach you how to control it. Her mouth opened in a wide yawn before she could stop it, and she quickly placed her hand over her mouth to cover it politely.

Lahi nodded to her first question, deciding to let Lune take the next one. Looking around he noted the faded of the sun in the sky, daylight faded early in the winter. Standing, he picked up their duffel bag, also going to pick up Fishi, stopping when Lune shook her head at him.

"We're here, because we're special," Lune stood gracefully, not buckling at all under the young girls weight as the twins began to walk toward the school.
"We can do things that other people can't, and here is where we can learn how to control what we can do," her voice was soft as she explained, her eyes slowly becoming cold as they exited the forest and other people on the grounds began to look in their direction.
