Mita Bran
Basic Information
Mita is a female Inchling, a people distantly related to other fantastical races like the Brownies of Scottish folklore and the Koro-pok-guru of northern Japan. She was born on the fifth of May, and turned twelve this year, going through her rites of adulthood and taking a task for herself two years prior. She does not have a job proper, but would be more than willing to help with chores for anyone willing to take her in.Appearance
Mita stands at just under two and three quarter inches tall, and if very proud of the fact that she is the tallest of her siblings. She has russet colored skin with chocolate brown freckles dotting almost her entire body. Her dark brown hair falls to her ankles when it is down, and she usually puts it into a braided bun to keep it out of the way. Her eyes are large and expressive with lilac violet irises, as well as a button nose.Like all Inchlings, she has a tail nearly half as long as she is tall, with a tuft of fur on the end that is the same color as her hair. Her ears are wide and triangular, sticking out almost perpendicular to her head, and have their own tufts of fur along their top edge. Her legs are digitigrade, not far off from a cat's, but lack fur.
She wears dresses that she makes herself from scraps of cloth either found or gifted to her. She also wears a wide brimmed straw hat that she made herself. She prefers bright colors and patterns for her clothes when she can get them. She wears no shoes, as her feet are tough enough to not need them.
Personality
Mita shares a bit of her race's inherent shyness towards the "big folk," as well as their cheerful attitude towards chores and being helpful. But here her similarities to her people end, for she was not content to live in the home she was born in, but would rather travel and see new things and find a home of her own. She also is braver than most Inchlings, and will engage in conversation with big folk. If she really takes a liking to someone, she will even allow them to carry her around. She is innately curious, and likes seeing how things work. She is also quite stubborn, and hates being told she can't do something.Powers
When Mita reached adulthood, she went through a rite of passage where she chose her specific task. While all Inchlings are passably good at most chores, one's task has a degree of magical aptitude to it. Mira's task is fixing machines. She has the preternatural ability to understand machinery, allowing her to build, operate, and fix machines, even with subpar supplies. She isn't necessarily that smart, she just has a feel for how to put the parts together and what she needs to do to operate the machine. She's still limited by her size, so though she knows how to drive a car, she wouldn't be able to without a lot of tinkering or an army of other Inchlings at her command.Species Abilities
All Inchlings have a few defense mechanisms to help them survive among humans and the occasional house cat attack. First and foremost, their skeletons are surprisingly springy, allowing them to squeeze into spaces that even their small frames wouldn't normally allow. This also gives them a measure of shock absorption, protecting their organs in case they get buffeted around.Likewise, they are excellent climbers, able to scale walls with ease without leaving claw marks in their wake. They are still limited by their speed, and it could take upwards of twenty minutes for an Inchling to climb a flight of stairs.
Finally, they fall with grace unlike anything else. An Inchling falling from a great height can hold their breath to slow their descent, landing on the ground as lightly as a feather.
Inchlings don't require sleep and eat very little food, the crust from a slice of bread lasting one several days. They use the time that their hosts are asleep to clean the mutual living space and forage for items to make their own miniature homes more cozy.
Background
Mita was born in a large manor owned by an old woman who knew the Inchling families that lived there very well. They had a good arrangement worked out; the woman would let the Inchlings take care of all the household chores and the Inchlings could walk pretty much unimpeded throughout the home. Over time, an entire settlement took over the kitchen and rafters of the manor. The woman rarely had visitors, and Mita was never quite as scared if the big folk as her kin. So over time she began visiting the old woman, talking and sharing drinks with her. They became fast friends. Her parents disapproved of her talking openly with the big folk, but she stubbornly kept it up. A few years into the friendship however, the old woman died. The other Inchlings were fine with the new owners of the home, who knew nothing of their tiny neighbors. But Mita was deeply saddened.
Over the years she thought about their conversations about other places, and the seed was planted for Mita to leave home.
On her choosing day, she chose a task that no Inchling in her family had ever taken; tinkering with machines. Almost immediately, she left home, telling her heartbroken parents that she wanted to see more of the world. They protested, but knew that their stubborn girl would do what she pleased. They only asked her to be careful and that she was always welcome back home.
Mita spent her first year hitching rides in cars and on other modes of transportation. She survived by stealing bits of food, and "paid" for it by fixing broken gadgets around her. She never revealed herself, having been warned that big folk were not all as kind as the old woman had been.
Sometime not long ago, she found herself on a ship with a lot of strange looking big folk. She overheard them talking about their destination: Manta Carlos. On the island now, she looks for a place to live while she explores this new and exciting place.
Additional Information
Mita speaks in the third person, which is the normal way Inchlings speak. She also refers to anyone larger than her collectively as big folk regardless of race.
