"Maybe. I already told them about Jude's powe- oh, right," Angelo faltered, realizing he probably didn't know. "Jude's power is that he can tell other people's powers. That's one of the reasons him being so insistent I shoot someone who was his friend shook me. If he said it, it meant he was convinced it needed to happen, and..."

Well, the cringe went without saying.

"Not exactly the smartest thing, but it seemed like the right idea in the moment. I told the officer about that, so they can ask him. Can't exactly use it as evidence, but he was within range of the big boss. He should know whatever she can throw at us, and I don't think there's an officer on the force who'd turn down that information."

Raphael grimaced. It made a lot of sense. But at the same time, there were so many things wrong with it. He didn't know where to start. He probably didn't need to.

"Definitely," he agreed about the information Jude was supposed to have. "I'd like to know too. So far we know about teleportation, teleporting other people, shields, some kind of magic hand thing, and..."

He furrowed his eyebrows, deep in thought.

"There's no way she's the boss," Raphael said. "Getting personally involved, showing her face like that? You would think she's more clever than that. And she was so melodramatic about threatening Del Bosque when she had ample opportunity to kill her. But she didn't." He shook his head. For an organization that managed to get multiple moles on the MCPD, they were remarkably unsubtle. "None of this adds up," he concluded. There had to be something below the surface. Some kind of trick.

Angelo cracked a smile when Raphael pointed out how melodramatic the woman had been. Oh, absolutely. He'd only heard bits and pieces and he had still gotten that very clear sense. The bullet holes were high, for one. Going for headshots? Aiming really badly?

"Agreed," Angelo said. "But she was in charge for that group. They're... I don't know. Nick Miller was... Dirty, yes. No question. There's a million questions about that, and the best guess I've got is that she was killing him to make sure he didn't snitch. But why not just kill del Bosque? Is this not about killing her? Is this one of those destroy them at all costs things?"

Raphael shook his head. "If it isn't just incompetence, this has to be some kind of trick. And I don't think an organization like theirs could be that incompetent. I mean, with the power they had, if they really wanted Del Bosque dead, she would be dead. And it would have been quieter. So, surely they were after something else."

And it was at this point, Raphael remembered that he shouldn't be trusting Angelo enough to tell him these kinds of theories. He didn't know what the deal could possibly be with Jude and Broen's connection to all this. The Black Wings had to be playing some kind of ten-dimensional chess, though - of that much, he felt reasonably confident.

"...any thoughts on what 'something else' could be?"

Angelo was combing his brain for the something else. Jude? No, unlikely. Jude had confided enough about the arm, but as best he could tell from the scene they'd all but ignored him. He wasn't sure where Jude had gotten the shotgun, but the relatively low body count and where the bodies had been sitting...

So not Jude.

Broen?

Only the question was...

"I think it's del Bosque," Angelo said flatly. "But I think she knows more than she's letting on. I cleared her when I first spoke to her, but..."

He was scowling now, leaning forward slightly as he folded his hands together.

"She's up to something, Raph. She knows something. None of this shit makes any sense with them just randomly attacking her. Absolutely fucking none of it. She said she didn't know shit, but you know what? I think she knew. I think she knew this was a risk, and..."

He was grinding his teeth, and he had to force himself to stop it.

"I've got to keep a straight face around her, but I don't know if I'm letting Jude go back to that job. Not after this. Every single bit of intuition I cultivated working here is fucking screaming at me that she's involved. That she lied to me when she said she didn't know what was going on at the warehouse."
