Jasmine wasn't sure what was going on lately. It seemed like everyone was losing their minds. Even today, someone had just destroyed the fountain in the courtyard. Jasmine didn't know what was going on, but she was going to find out. And with their first case being seemingly being the first of these incidents she had a gut feeling that getting to the bottom of that would lead to clues about the other incidents.

Talking to the others, her first big break was another student: Madeline Moore. She was suspicious on a number of different levels, among them being a demon. Jasmine had tried to not let that color her perceptions, but it was next to impossible. So she just kept it as quiet as she could. Still, all she had to do was find evidence that linked her to any of this. Or anything at all. It had been an uphill battle to keep Eric from coming with her, and so Jazz had just given up eventually. She could use the lookout anyway and hey. Bonding experience right?

Her hands were only shaking a little as she picked the lock on the girl's dorm. Inside was, by and large, standard. But as she snooped around Jasmine noticed a few odd things. This girl had a lot of stuff that was a good bit more expensive looking than it really had any right to be. Jazz knew from checking up on her that she played music to make extra money, but she couldn't be making this much extra. There had to be something going on. Using a disposable camera, she started taking pictures. Going through drawers. Nothing but underwear in that one. She was looking for anything that might give her a lead to the next clue.

Eric was doing his best to help watch out for Madeline. He knew what that girl looked like, from pictures he'd found in last year's yearbook. So when she walked by on the way to her room, he recognized her.

There was just one problem. He wasn't entirely clear on what the hell he was supposed to do about that.

——— ——— ———

Madeline had to take it easy now that she was recovering from her surgery. And that fucking sucked. On top of everything else that had led her to this, she couldn't drink alcohol and take her post-surgery medications at the same time. That meant she couldn't make the most of all those graduation parties that had been going on all weekend, and she couldn't dance for too long without wearing herself out or hurting herself. It was the dingleberry atop this whole shit sundae.

So she was heading back to her room to take a nap, and the last thing she wanted to deal with was literally any kind of nonsense.

"MADELINE!" Some guy in the hall just about shouted her name, and she nearly jumped. She jerked around to face him.

"Holy shit, what is it?"

He was a really big guy, too. And he looked kinda nervous, like he didn't know what he was supposed to do. "Uhhh... sorry, that was too loud. I'm Eric Fleetman."

"...Okay." She looked at him, expecting him to explain why he was bothering her.

"Uh, did you hear about that girl with the fountain?"

"Yeah, literally everyone has."

"Aren't you friends with the girl who did it?"

"Not really."

Eric made a few more feeble attempts to hold her up, but it was all in vain. Madeline just wanted to go to her room, and Eric's presence annoyed her. Hopefully, Jazz had at least heard him call out Madeline's name.

Jasmine did in fact hear Eric shout Madeline's name, and her heart jumped into her throat as she panicked and looked around for a place to hide. She could escape through the window, but that would leave the window open and Madeline would know that someone had been there.

After a moment's deliberation, she dived behind the couch, squeezing herself into the corner and hunkering down low so that she couldn't be seen. Hopefully Maddie would go into her room proper and Jasmine could just sneak out the front door with no problem.

Madeline let out a long exhale when the door was shut behind her. "What's his problem..." she muttered to herself.

She sat down on the couch and kicked off her shoes, then she put her feet up, and she started checking things on her phone. She needed a second to relax more, after whatever the hell that was, before trying to nap.

What she found on her phone did not help her relax. "...Who keeps telling people I have cancer?" She said this out loud, exasperated.

Of course she had just decided to take a seat on the couch. Who knew how long she would be in there? Jasmine bit her lip, unsure of what she should do. She didn't have a lot of options that didn't involve letting Maddie know that she was hiding there.

Resting her forehead against the back of the couch, she racked her brain until the normal, sensible ideas gave way to the silly and desperate. All the while she half listened to Maddie, not trying to eavesdrop but also definitely trying to eavesdrop.

She realized that this was a perfect opportunity. If Madeline was involved in these rumors and strange goings on, she might let something slip if she thought she was alone in the room. She could figure out a way out later.

Madeline flitted through her phone for a minute. Then she locked it and stared at the ceiling.

And after a moment of that, she started talking to herself again. "I still hate that idea. Like..." She sat upright, putting her feet on the ground. "He spent sixteen years not giving a shit. Quit showing me that letter."

She sat there for a few more seconds. Then, with a frustrated sigh, she got up and started walking over to her bed, taking off her top and her bra, getting more comfortable for her nap.

Soon, she would be coming back out to take off her makeup in the bathroom. She was holding a new shirt, but she hadn't put it on yet. It wasn't like anyone else was in here with her. There was a scar, and a line of stitches underneath her bellybutton.

Jasmine poked her head out when she heard Madeline get up from the couch to see what she was doing. Where she was going. And immediately regretted it. Her cheeks turned hot with embarrassment, yes definitely embarrassment as the other girl took her shirt off.

The things Madeline had said had been odd, but at this point Jazz was more concerned about getting out of here unnoticed. Though those stitches were were of distracting too. What was that about?

The second Madeline crossed into the bathroom, Jasmine was straight up creeping, heading for the door. She had learned from too many failures how to sneak, but she didn't know if she'd make it into time before Maddie came back out. Still, this was her only chance. Eric was probably still outside, waiting and worried.

Madeline had just gotten started on her makeup, when she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye. It was the shadow that gave her away. She poked her head around the corner, and that confirmed it - she was not alone in her room.

"What the hell? Why - Jasmine? What are you doing here?"

The hand with her t-shirt immediately went to cover her scar, not her chest. It took her a second to remember she could use illusions for this, and a floating black rectangle began to shield her chest from view.

In a matter of seconds, she would stop covering her belly. Her scar and the stitches would be gone.

Jasmine froze like a deer caught in the headlights of a car, the color draining from her face and her heart feeling like it was about to explode. Should she lie? Tell the truth? Her dad would have insisted she be truthful, but that notion had long left her with her work with the Enigmas.

Slowly turning, her cheeks turning bright pink as she took in the sight of the black bar covering Madeline's chest. Somehow that was worse, like bringing attention to a zit by covering it with a giant band-aid.

"I, uh- well you see..." Where to even begin? Jasmine pressed the tips of her index fingers together, looking every bit as sheepish and embarrassed as she felt. "I was playing a game with my friends. Like spies or something like that. My friend told me this was her room and I was too embarrassed to just let myself be caught..."

Definitely a lie, but Jasmine held up hope that Maddie would play along and let her go.She could explain better later, under less pressure.

Madeline was not going to play along with the person who broke into her room and hid in it, and probably watched her get topless without her noticing. She knew Jasmine was bullshitting her. It was a strong gut feeling, backed up by everything she could read about Jazz's body language and the situation in general. Her disbelief probably showed in Madeline's furrowed eyebrows, her steadily intensifying glare.

When Madeline noticed the camera, she got on edge. She hurriedly put her shirt on to continue this conversation, before getting a little louder. More in Jasmine's face. "And what's with the camera? Take any good pictures of me?"
