Name: Margo North
Age: 14
Birthday: 01/25
Gender: Female
Species: Espnid
Category: Student
Class: High School
Grade: Freshman (9th Grade)
Appearance Description:
In her true form, Margo's body is that of a dark-shelled insect. Humanoid in nature, her insect body stands at 5'4" tall and allows her to walk on two legs. This is not her preferred method of transportation, however, as her insectoid body also allows her to fly through the use of two long, transparent, blue-tinted wings. Her big blue bug eyes glow eerily in the dark, and her jagged black exoskeleton is cold to the touch. So, one might see why people generally prefer to see her in her human form.
While in human form, Margo appears to be as average as any other girl. Boasting a pair of beautiful blue eyes and soft Caucasian skin, she tends to keep her silky black hair short, leaving nothing to conceal the freckles scattered across her cheeks. Hoodies, shorts, skirts, and jeans take up most of her closet space, and thanks to her biology, she must always wear glasses while in human form.
Personality Description:
Fueled by a drive to make the most of her life, Margo is always looking for her next adventure. Courageous in the face of unnerving odds, and eager to make a positive difference in the lives of her friends, she adamantly refuses to back down from a challenge. This determination can, however, lead her into some nasty pitfalls.
It is not uncommon to see Margo acting on sheer emotion, ultimately disregarding her own safety and the well-being of others. In addition to being emotional and reckless, Margo is known for her self-criticality and can be incredibly hard on herself under the shadow of failure. This, in turn, leads to diminished social and academic performance.
Species Abilities:
Living in vast underground caverns has led Margo's people to evolve in a low-light ecosystem that has not gone undisturbed by human mining and excavations. In response to the presence of humans in their natural habitats, the Espnid people have developed shapeshifting abilities, which are used to lure humans into subterranean feeding grounds. These shapeshifting abilities allow the Espnid to appear fully human, and they can actively choose what age, sex, and race they want to appear to be. They can copy a pre-existing human's appearance, or create a custom appearance based on what they want to look like. They can also shapeshift however many times they want and have no difficulty shapeshifting back into their Espnid forms. However, they cannot shapeshift into anything other than a human, and they cannot change their cold-blooded nature, which makes them highly susceptible to death in temperatures below thirty degrees Fahrenheit.
Once a human has entered their feeding grounds, the Espnid use night vision to hunt down their prey, and then trap him or her in a thick, silky cocoon for future consumption. These cocoons are inescapable from within, but can be easily dismantled by fire or blunt force trauma, and while the level of night vision shared amongst all Espnid drones gives them perfect eyesight in pitch-black environments, it also leaves their eyes weak against natural and artificial light. Notably, insectoids only have so much webbing they can use for their cocoons before running out. If an insectoid runs out of webbing, they must eat in order to replenish their supply.
In the event that they are outmatched by their prey during a hunt, insectoids have a go-to method of escape which comes gratis of their long, tinted wings. As one might imagine, these wings allow them to fly, giving them access to the skies and a quick height advantage, but flying is just as exhausting to Espnids as running is to humans, and it cannot be sustained for long.

Biography: For decades, the fast-evolving Espnids lived peaceful lives underground in massive caverns. This was interrupted by human mining efforts, and the Espnids deemed humanity to be a threat to their continued existence. Evolving into predators, the practice of hunting humans as food began and remained a staple in every home until one girl dared to remember the peace the Espnid people once enjoyed. Going out of her way to speak out against the practice of hunting humans throughout larvahood, Margo eventually caught the attention of her elders.
Fed up with her rebellious tendencies, the ruling hierarchy declared that Margo was a blight on the insectoid bloodline, and decreed that she would no longer remain a member of their society. To this effect, Margo was cast out into the open world. Unsure of how to approach humans, she spent the first day of her exile trying to come up with a plan of action, and ultimately decided to try and ask the local humans for help.
This proved to be a disastrous decision, with disastrous consequences. Upon approaching a passing family in her insectoid form, she immediately found herself under attack from the husband, who repeatedly called her a 'monster.' This incident left Margo petrified, and after escaping the confrontation, she decided to use her shapeshifting ability to assume a human form until she could be sure it was safe to change back into her true form.
The opportunity to change back came faster than expected. One morning, after feeding on a few mosquitos in an open field, a stranger approached her. Speaking as though he were an old friend, the man informed Margo that he had heard about the confrontation between her and the family, that he knew what she was, and that he was a scout for Starlight Academy.
Margo didn't try to argue with him; he had just seen her eating mosquitos, after all. After using her shapeshifting ability to show him her true form, she admitted that she had no idea what to do with herself, and needed help. At the end of the day, Margo found herself on a boat, heading to Starlight Academy, and whispering a silent 'goodbye' to the hive she once called home.
