Malina hesitated, her finger hovering over the 'send' button.

She had been out in the city today, leaving out advertisements for a Forbidden Forest safety seminar. That was when she'd run into Vance. The poor kid had been terrified of the other werewolves there. She remembered the scent vividly, and it broke her heart thinking about it.

Someone had to do something about it.

Vance would actually jump jump a bit when when his phone went off. Opening it he'd state at the text a moment before saying a quick reply.

"No"

He'd immediately regret sending it and would quickly send another.

"Ok, maybe"

He'd sit against the wall in his dorm, fiddling with the phone a bit.

If she had to guess, this was more about old trauma than current abuse. But if it was the latter, well. That wouldn't stand.

He'd stare at the text a moment before trying to type in a reply. After typing several things and deleting them all he'd fling the phone at the wall, with a sigh he'd walk to it and pick it up. Sitting on the floor he'd try again.

"I'm not scared. And no one is hurting me, my pack, the Olcan's, they punished me when they needed to."

A lie, the rest was stated out of confusion over how badly he'd been treated.

Malina never thought she would have a strong opinion about "true Olcans" and "pretenders" again. She felt she was about to.

Vance wasn't really sure how to answer that question. The pack had done a lot of things to him.

"They punished when they needed to. If I messed up a hunt, or tried to eat before true wolves. It was to teach me."

Obviously that wasn't how a kid should be treated and taught, but after two years of it he was confused and traumatized.

That part about "eating before true wolves" made her blood boil. She put on some tea to help calm her nerves.

I had a feeling you may have been turned rather than a born werewolf. I had my differences with my pack, but we at least knew how to treat those who we turned. The inner wolf is a gift. The people we bestow it to are trusted friends, not second-class citizens. You are every bit as worthy as any other werewolf, and you deserved to be treated that way.

Vance was confused by it all. Sure he remembered his parents, his life from before, but it wasn't easy sorting through his emotions. So there was a pause before he replied.

"Maybe they were right. I'm not very good at hunting, sometimes I'd mess up, make it harder to find food. Maybe I'm just not good at it, so they had to be harder on me."

That logic of course didn't make any sense, but he was a confused kid afterall.
