Making Friends and Omelettes

Humming softly to herself Celeste checked out the cupboards, looked in the fridges, the school large pantry, and made a list of ingredients they would need for her next few classes. She was thinking that they could do, maybe a cake or a pie, of some sort. It shouldn't be too difficult to make, but at the same time, it needed to teach or go over the basics. A sponge cake would be good for that, but Celeste had a feeling there'd be more broken eggs and wasted egg whites than was necessary. Maybe, they could do a simple apple pie or apple crumble - English style - with a pie crust bottom and a topping of sugar, butter, nuts and flour.

Thinking about the days ahead, Celeste took out a few ingredients to make a Spanish potato and egg omelette for her next class she had in a few hours. Her middle schoolers were studying about different food and dishes from around the world, and this week was Spain. So Celeste had decided that an easy dish was a Spanish omelette, it was uncomplicated and used four ingredients - eggs, potatoes, salt and oil. Surely nothing too bad could go wrong.

Taking the potatoes, Celeste started to peel them, once that was done, she put the potato peels in a large composting bin and grabbed another knife to chop them up into bite-sized pieces, unaware that she was being watched.

Placing the potatoes in a colander, she rinsed them in the sink, and then set them aside to drain. Turning on the oil, warming it up, Celeste started to sing softly to herself, a light lilting tune about the Scottish highlands and lost lovers.

Happy, she enjoyed cooking, Celeste walked over and grabbed a metal spatula, noticing now the classroom door move slightly out of the corner of her eye, she stopped singing then and glanced around curiosly to see if anyone was there, when she saw nobody, she shrugged, started singing again and added the potatoes to the hot grease.

Celeste was just mixing the eggs into the potatoes with some salt and putting everything into a greased frying pan. She'd cook one side and then flip it. As she was placing the pan in the sink to soak, she heard a tiny voice from somewhere behind her. Curious, she turned around and saw it was one of the younger elementary students.

Watching him lift himself onto the counter, complaining about the height, made her chuckle softly. "Good morning," she said to him with a wide grin, "You are up bright and early, I see..." she remarked with a warm smile looking at the young pup as she wiped her hands dry on a tea towel and glanced at the wall clock to see the time.

"Well... I am making a potato omelette," she explained in answer to his question about what she was cooking. "It's a special dish that people eat in other parts of the world," she explained with a smile as she stirred the egg mixture a bit so it would cook better.

"Do you like omelettes?" Celested asked him then as she looked at the young student in a friendly matter, very used to people and students watching her cook.

Celeste grinned widely at the silver-furred comment. "Oh, it's your first day, is it?" Celeste said warmly as she turned to face the pup. "Oh, I see, you live in the dorms..." she stated, hiding a grin about how he sneaked out past the dorm master.

Celeste nodded at his question about omelettes. "Yes, they are." she said and smiled at him, "If you want, you can try some when it's finished." she offered as she checked the underside, saw it was done and then flipped the omelette.

"Well, hello, Alex, I'm Celeste, Miss Forestier to my students..." she replied kindly holding her hand out to the small pup to shake.
