Name: Maki Morishima
Age: 12
Birthday: August 10th
Gender: Female
Species: Oni
Category: Student
Class: Elementary
Grade: 6th
Appearance Description: Typically the image most people conjure in their heads whenever they hear 'oni' is a large, hideous ogre like creature, but this couldn't be further from the truth in Maki's case. She's quite short and petite, standing at barely over four feet. Her skin is reasonably pale in tone, and covered in strange red markings, noticeably around her hands and feet, her neck, forehead, as well as under and around her eyes. On the topic of her hands and feet, they are in fact covered in smooth red scales, with fairly sharp black claws tipping each digit. Her hair is golden blonde; it's long, straight, and quite smooth. Maki's eyes are a more firey gold than her hair, with vertically slitted pupils. Her ears are slightly elongated and pointed, much like her four canine teeth; the lower two are marginally longer and sharper than the top. Two dark red horns protrude from her forehead, reasonably short and very sharp; raised black rings coil around the length of them before stopping closer to the tips. A vertically flipped marking of a third eye rests at the center of her forehead, surrounded by more red marks that continue seamlessly into her hair. Maki almost exclusively favors traditional clothing worn in the section of the spirit world she hails from, and finds most other garments very distasteful.
Personality Description: Maki is an exceptionally headstrong and obstinate girl, very much feisty and willing to argue or fight with almost anybody if they get on her bad side (which is not at all hard). She's certainly one to hold grudges, and long term or petty ones at that. Having raised herself for all intents and purposes, Maki is incredibly averse for accepting help from anybody, especially if it's something she perceives to be charity, or out of pity. She's been referred to a considerable number of people as a 'problem child', someone who has a deep rooted disdain for authority and what she perceives to be people that patronize her. Despite her rather thorny demeanor, Maki is constantly fighting with herself to tell her that she doesn't want to and can't afford to get close to others, and is a fair bit more sensitive than she lets on. In large part to keep her mind occupied, as well as simply being a deeply angry and bitter kid, Maki tends to lash out at the people and things around her pretty easily. She's been known to instigate fights regularly, as well as vandalize things in numerous ways. She seems to have a particular and somewhat troubling love of fire, and frequently plays around with it even if she isn't actually burning anything.
Active Abilities: Spirit Phase - Maki is able to move into or out of the spirit world at will, taking between five to ten seconds. This particular spirit plane takes up essentially the same physical space as any particular spot in the human world, or at least acts as a parallel point of reference. The landscape is entirely different, however, and is inhabited by all manner of other yokai like herself, as well as similar, related spirits and demons. While travelling through the spirit world, she's able to focus in and see through to the parallel space in the human world, which she generally utilizes to phase out and quickly steal something before returning. She's also capable of only partially phasing, for example just a hand, making her an excellent pickpocket. However, she can't partially phase into the spirit world and has to shift over entirely.
Ghostflame - Maki can produce and control an intensely hot, white flame from her hands and manipulate it within a twenty foot area. Unlike normal fire, or even most magical fire, it bypasses the vast majority of physical and magical resistances. Additionally, it can damage intangible things such as apparitions. Maki can produce and control this flame for a maximum of thirty seconds at a time, at which point she'll need to cool down for a minute to use it again. She takes no damage from her own fire.
Illusions - Maki is exceptionally skilled at crafting a wide variety of illusions, either of individuals or objects, and is currently trying to learn how to affect areas. It's much easier for her to create illusions of something she's already seen before, at least in part. Her illusions are somewhat harder to see through than normal for people that could see through other illusions, but by no means impossible. It doesn't require active concentration to keep her illusions up, but they may falter if her attention is disturbed too terribly much. She's only able to maintain a maximum amount of two large (8 feet tall/wide at most) and three small illusions concurrently.
Passive Abilities: True Sight - The eye on Maki's forehead is certainly not just decorative, and provides a few benefits to her as of now, with others likely to come as she gets older. Firstly, Maki is able to see through any and all illusions as if they weren't there at all, except for her own. Secondly, she can see peoples' magical auras, as well as the relative strength and nature of them. Thirdly, she can see spirits inhabiting the mortal plane. If overwhelmed with information gained this way, Maki tends to suffer from intense headaches originating from her third eye, sometimes enough to incapacitate her altogether.
Oni Physiology - Maki's lifespan is significantly extended, and she'll eventually stop aging altogether. Additionally, she's incredibly strong for her age, and is able to lift up to four hundred pounds with some effort.
Supernatural Quiet - Maki moves with very muted sound; even if she's sprinting it'll sound at most like softly sneaking to those with even the most sensitive ears. However, if she's walking directly behind someone, she's one hundred percent silent.
Infinite Stomach - Maki can eat any amount of food normally digestible by humans or yokai with no ill effects whatsoever. Even though her stomach is bottomless, she only needs as much sustenance as a girl her age typically would, and doesn't have any abnormal hunger related to this.
Weaknesses: Shade Phase - If Maki either sleeps beneath the shade of a tree or simply is beneath one at sundown, she is forced to transition over to the spirit world and is unable to leave until the sun rises once again. Additionally, when she comes to the spirit world this way she's unable to see through to the human world as she usually can, and thus the place where she returns may be unpredictable.
Common Magical Items:
Simple Language Charm (Japanese): This is the standard language charm provided to most characters. It translates a characters mother tongue into English, and allows them to hear English as their mother tongue.
Biography: Maki, like the vast majority of yokai, was born in the spirit world, in a section that happened to be located in a parallel location to Japan. She had a relatively normal upbringing until her parents' disappearance around her fourth birthday. This wasn't actually all too uncommon where she was from, and as such it wasn't too surprising to any of the denizens of her particular slice of the spirit world that this oni child was effectively raising herself from that point on. In large part bored of her home, Maki began making frequent forays into the human world to explore around, initially just to steal more interesting things than the items she had grown bored of in her home turf. Eventually, however, she began to gain a legitimate interest in the humans' world, and as she had no real way of receiving an education in the spirit world (having only learned to read and count on her own by then, she began to attend a number of different elementary schools across the country for curiosity and boredom's sake.
Maki developed a system of disguising herself as various different "lost children" and attending school in small, less developed villages around the country, moving on to the next whenever she felt the townsfolk were growing too suspicious of her origin. She was able to keep this pattern up for a number of years, maintaining a fairly consistent school performance, before Manta Carlos scouts caught wind of it and began a fairly short investigation into things. It didn't particularly help Maki's case that an urban legend regarding her 'phantom thefts' had started circulating online, and as such scouts didn't take very long to track her down. She was pretty uncooperative with them, assuring them that she fully intended on continuing her same activities regardless of what they thought, or "their stupid Veil", but ultimately figured that there would be better and more interesting things to steal there. The assurance that she'd be able to receive a quality education without going to the effort of hiding herself seemed fine too. As such, she hesitantly agreed to go along with them to this fabled island, with every intention to leave if things didn't go her way.
Resources: School stipend, whatever she manages to snag.
