Things had been off, he didn't feel right, he liked Mari, or at least he thought he did, so he spent time with her, but he felt like he was drifting away from the others. The people he cared about, Nyota and Anna. So he'd slipped a note into Anna's locker one day.

Anna
I'm sorry I haven't been talking much lately, just been with Mari. Been feeling kinda off though, don't know why. Things have felt off. I miss you.
-James

Her best friend had been terribly absent, which made Anna feel lonely most of the time. She'd talked to Vanessa about things, but she was still worried about James. Sure, maybe she was jealous of the way Mari had taken her best friend away from her, but Anna figured James would at least try to spend time with her if he wanted to, and the fact that he wasn't...well, it made her a little depressed, to be honest.

Anna had been keeping an eye on her bracelet, but lately it had been mostly colors that made Anna worry even more, telling her when James was anxious or depressed...it was rare that he was happy lately, and that scared her.

She was switching books between classes when a paper fell from her locker and fluttered to her feet. Picking it up, Anna recognized the writing immediately. James. She read the note and furrowed her brow. Things felt off? Tearing a page from her notebook, she scribbled out a response.

James,
I've been so worried about you lately. I miss you, too. What's going on with Mari?
~Anna

She passed by James' locker and slipped the note into it before scurrying off to class.

James found the note, his sad tired eyes reading through it slowly, taking the words in. Gods, he'd really missed her, more than he'd realized. She'd been a light in his life from day one. He felt his eyes water up a bit, but he quickly forced the tears back.

Taking pencil and paper, he jotted down a reply.

Anna,
I don't know. Something happened but I can't remember what. I'm not going to lie, I'd been drinking, now she's ignoring me and acting distant. I went to that VR thing and it, it did something, I got drunk and I don't know. Things don't feel right.
-James

He passed her locker that evening and slipped it in, he was afraid of how she'll react.

Anna had checked her locker throughout the day, but there had been no more notes...it wasn't until the following morning that another paper fluttered down to her feet. She felt her heart skip a little as she picked it up and unfolded it to read the contents.

She frowned. He'd been drinking? Something about the VR thing that had happened recently? Anna gave a put-upon sigh and wrote out her reply.

James,
You probably shouldn't be drinking, it's illegal at your age and not good for you, anyways. Perhaps your drinking is what's pushing her away?
I'm worried about you, James. You've been distant from me and I can't help but feel it's because of Mari. Why don't we hang out anymore?
~Anna

James read her reply, she truly cared about him. It made his heart hurt, she was important to him, more than he realized. He ran his fingers over the bracelet she'd given him.

Taking a breath, he quickly wrote down a reply.

Anna,
I only had one beer, that wasn't enough to get me drunk, but I remember nothing after that. Like my memories are gone, I woke up in her bed. Something's wrong, maybe with me, but I'm doubting things anymore. I want to see you Anna, I miss you. I've screwed up so much.

Anna read his next note that afternoon and gave a heavy sigh. He was in trouble. It worried her greatly. She tore another paper from her notebook and wrote out:

James,
I want to see you, too.

She paused and touched the key that hung on a chain around her neck. She'd been trying to give him his space, but perhaps it was time for her to see him again. They needed to talk, face to face. His room might not be the best place, though...Mari could probably waltz in at any second and ruin things.

I'll be on the college dorm roof tonight around 11pm. Please meet me there.

Anna slipped the note into his locker and went about her day. It dragged by. She finally made her way to the rooftop with her mini-harp in hand. If he was indeed entranced, she had to take Vanessa's advice and try to break him from it with her own song. She was determined to take her friend back. Letting her wings sprout from her back, she settled on the concrete and plucked at the strings of her harp, pulling music from it. She sang, her heart in the music like it had never been before, calling James to her with the power of her song.

James found her note and quickly read it. She wanted to meet, to talk, he did to. He badly wanted to be around her again, to talk, just to see her again, see her smile again.

The day seemed to last forever, his eyes always going to the clock, counting down the seconds, the minutes and the hours. Time seemed to move painfully slow, as if mocking him. Finally the day ended and the day turned to night and the time came.

He made his way up, hesitating at the door to the roof. The music, her music, so beautiful, so special. She deserved a better friend, or at least that's what he thought. He felt the tug of the music, he could maybe fought against it, but he didn't want to, so he opened the door and stepped through.

There she was, like a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. He tried to smile at her, but it came out sad with a little pain as he walked toward her. He'd missed her so much, far more than he'd realized.

She heard the door open behind her and stopped her music, setting the harp aside and quickly scrambling to her feet. Her large wings caused a gust of wind as she whirled around to face him. For a moment, she just stared at him as her heart fluttered a little in her chest and relief spread through her. The relief was short-lived...he looked wrong, his smile was wrong. He looked...broken.

Closing the gap between them, Anna ran to James and threw her arms around him, pressing her head against his chest. "I was worried you wouldn't come," she murmured into his shirt as a few tears formed in the corners of her eyes. "I missed you so much." Her best friend. She didn't want to let him go ever again for fear that he would disappear once more.

James didn't react right away when she hugged him, he'd felt numb and broken for a while now. Then, the tears started flowing from his eyes as he wrapped his arms around her. "I....I had to come...had to see you," he took a shaky breath, "I...oh gods, I'm so sorry."

He didn't want to let her go, so he didn't for a while, he just held her close. She'd always made things feel better, a light in what has been a very dark life. "I shouldn't of....pushed you away," he hadn't realized it until now, but Anna had changed his life, had been doing so since they met.

"Things are...I don't know," he slowly sat down, keeping his arms around her, "something's so wrong....maybe with me...maybe its all my fault."

She pressed close to James, sliding down to her knees as he took a seat. Gently pulling back a little, her hands found his face and she wiped the tears from his cheeks with her thumbs. "It's okay, it's okay," she cooed, and ran a hand through his hair, pushing it back from his face. "I don't see how it can be your fault. I...think it's Mari. She's changed you. I want the old James back, I want my friend back," she told him, choking up a little as tears came to her eyes, too.

"I've been so worried about you," she told him, just as she'd said in her notes to him. He hadn't been acting like himself and it scared her to death. "You've been...anxious, and depressed, and sad a lot, it makes my heart hurt to know that you're not happy. I want you to be happy." She wished she knew what to do to make him happy again. She would give anything to have her friend be happy.
