With a blank expression and a fast paced gait, a small green boy made his way past the lake, disturbing the calm that was present before he arrived. It was weird for Carmin to be out and about, he typically stayed in his room where he could easily avoid everything. But it was getting boring doing nothing every day so he decided he'd get out and see the world a little. Of course, his definition of "see the world" meant hiding alone in the forest and reading his book, but it was still better than usual for him.

He wore a pair of small navy blue pants, and a simple grey tee shirt. Nothing particularly fancy, seeing as how he'd be sitting in the woods. He also had his signature blue backpack strapped on his back, which a turquoise bracelet on his arm to inform people that he wasn't somebody's lost child.

He was a tad unsure about going into the woods, mostly because of the freakishness that seemed to exist on this cursed island. However, there were vampires in the library anyway, so it wasn't like he was taking on any additional risks at the forest. He made sure to stay near the outskirts, sitting under a tree where he could still see the way back out to the lake. He then took out his water bottle and a book, taking a tiny sip before flipping through pages to find his bookmark. He wasn't particularly interested in the book he was reading, but he'd read half already and figured he might as well finish the job.

After a half hour or so of peaceful reading, Carmin found he was getting swarmed by bugs. He tried getting up and moving a few times, but they were persistent. The swarm only seemed to get larger and before long he was completely surrounded by the little devils. He pulled a fly swatter out of his bag and ran way shaking the little weapon at them, but his speed was kind of pathetic and he still wasn't losing them. After ten minutes of this horror, the only thing he seemed to lose was the way back.

Forgetting about the bugs for a moment, the realization that he'd gotten himself lost quickly brought him into a state of panic. Everything looked the same, how the heck was he supposed to find his way back? How big even was this forest? How long had he been running? While Carmin was frozen in fear, the flies gathered on the flowers around his body, luckily only after the nectar.

After the initial shock wore off, Carmin started thinking of a way to navigate back. Suddenly disturbing the bugs as he dropped down to search his bag for anything useful. After finding nothing particularly useful, he switched to checking for footprints. The ground seemed to be too hard to leave a consistent trail, so that was a dead end too. Carmin brainstormed hard about what he could possibly do, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized how difficult it was going to be to find his way back. The bugs only added to the frustration, buzzing in his ears and keeping up with the constant harassment while he paced back and forth, desperate for ideas.

Little by little, gradually and carefully, Kahi had managed to dare to approach the more populated areas of this landmass that she had after few months of exploring concluded to be an island. That meant Kahi had no way of getting off of it on her own, she would have to somehow use the devices the humanoids made to get out, like the flying device she had been brought on the island with. Kahi wanted to get home, and find her brethren. Her only family left alive. But...what if she would never find them? What if Kahi would be left alone in a large, dangerous jungle, reminded by the haunting memories of how good her life used to be whenever the wind rustled the treetops?
Kahi was getting sad just by thinking about it, and she let out a quiet and sad trilling sound while laying down on a branch.

Kahi was feeling hungry, but for some reason her scent wasn't properly attracting any bugs, just few pathetic mosquitoes that weren't enough to fill her stomach. She would have to move around in search of better hunting grounds. Perhaps closer to that large body of water, the air was moist there and many bugs buzzed around in that area.
Kahi sat up, yawned a tiny yawn and lifted off, fluttering towards the lake. But as she was on her way there a strange smell came along. A smell very much like her own, a sweet alluring smell. Kahi turned her head towards where the scent was coming from, she was tempted to follow it and see what kind of plant or creature was secreting this scent. But Kahi was also suspicious, scents like these were meant to lure and that meant she might find a predator at the source of the smell.
Eventually, after hearing some running steps and other sounds humanoids usually made from the direction of the scent, Kahi decided to go and investigate. She took off from the branch she had landed on to ponder and flew until she saw...a peculiar sight.

Kahi landed on a tree branch few meters from the creature. Or was it a creature? It smelled and somehow looked like a plant, but at the same time it wasn't? It was humanoid shaped, and acted humanoid. Currently it seemed anxious and erratic, digging through its back pouch and after doing that for a while looking around. Kahi could recognize the signs, was it lost? It certainly didn't seem to be familiar with its surroundings. And-
Oh great Earth so many delicious looking plump bugs.
Kahi only now realized all the bugs surrounding the creature. It smelled so much more strongly of nectar that the bugs didn't even notice Kahi, and they all looked big and delicious. Kahi's mouth salivated, she was so hungry, and she had to fight off the urge to just shoot off the branch and hunt down all those yummy bugs. The wisest decision would've been to just leave it, turn around and fly away. But look at all those bugs...

Kahi swallowed, and made a possibly stupid decision. She took off, and flew just a bit closer, to a medium sized rock on the ground, nice and warm from the sun. And from there she shot off her tongue and snatched a plump fly from next to the creature's head. She tried to do it quietly, but if one listened close enough the snap of Kahi's tongue was clear. And afterwards Kahi pressed down and backed away a bit, ready to fly away if the creature saw her and/or showed any signs of aggression.

Out of ideas, Carmin was getting really frustrated. He didn't want to just randomly pick a direction and head that way, but he'd basically tried everything else. And the little bits that he did know about the woods were totally useless thanks to how little he knew about the island. He could tell which way was north, south, east and west thanks to the moss and the sun, but it didn't matter if he didn't know which direction he'd even came from.

When one of the bugs from the posy he'd attracted went missing, he didn't notice in the slightest. He was preoccupied with figuring his mess out and couldn't hear all too well with a hundred flies swarming his head. The whole ordeal had driven him to about the limit he could handle at this point. Causing him to scream "Damnit!" and kick a small rock that rolled a few feet away. He trembled for a few seconds after, letting a few small tears trickle down his face, then gave one last outburst, desperately swatting at the flies.

His efforts were futile, but they at least allowed him to let off some steam. He was calm afterwards, shoving the flyswatter into his bag and sliding it back on to his shoulders. A lot of regret swirled around in his head. He was supposed to gone and gotten a cellphone, but hadn't bothered just yet. In all honesty that's probably where he should've gone, not the woods. He should've been more careful too, the whole situation could've been avoided pretty easily had he paid better attention to his surroundings. He kept on like this in his head for a while, considering his mistakes and how unlucky this whole thing was. But regret wasn't going to teleport him back to the island, so he finally snapped out of it and started walking.

The creature was too preoccupied by itself and thankfully didn't notice Kahi partaking on the bugs buzzing around it. This encouraged Kahi to keep preying on the flies, but she still craved more after eating two flies. Kahi would have to get closer to get more flies, but Kahi didn't want to reveal her position, and that was hard when her very bright colours would probably catch the eye of the creature even if it was distracted. Maybe she should-
"Damnit!"
Kahi flinched and immediately dove behind the rock when the creature suddenly screamed out, probably from frustration and panic. Kahi didn't know what the word the creature had shouted meant, but it was most likely a curse word of some kind. Kahi peeked from behind the rock, and was able to see the tears trickling out from the creatures eyes. Kahi felt her chest tighten in compassion, she hadn't known that these humanoids could also cry.

Kahi observed the creature once it went silent after one last outburst, perhaps it was in thought. During this period of peace Kahi carefully shuffled back on top of the rock and snatched one more fly, but there were so many left. And they seemed to really bother the humanoid...
Eventually the humanoid began walking, and Kahi noted that if it wanted to get back to civilization it was going to the wrong direction. The humanoid habitat was in the opposite direction. Kahi fidgeted as she watched the humanoid go, glancing behind her, towards where the large body of water was. Perhaps she should just leave this be, someone would eventually find this small plant humanoid, it wasn't Kahi's responsibility, she was just creating more trouble for herse-
Kahi fluttered off the ground and after the humanoid, she herself screeching from frustration. She couldn't leave the small being alone after seeing the tears, she felt the urge to help it after knowing they shared common feelings.

Kahi quickly caught up to the creature, and flew in front of it, spreading her wings wide so she definitely caught its attention. Now it was time to test the few words Kahi had learned of this language that all these humanoid creatures seemed to share.
"No!"
Was all Kahi said, adding couple of warning trilling sounds and one screech after the word. Her pronunciation was a bit strange, but the word was understandable. Kahi knew it meant refusal, or denial, and that it was usually accompanied with head shaking, like her kind did as well.

Carmin wasn't walking for very long when a huge butterfly appeared before him. It sounded like it shouted "No" at him, clear as day, but part of him felt as if his ears were deceiving him. The noises afterward caused Carmin to fall backwards, staring up in shock at the bizarre creature. Upon closer inspection, he could no longer tell what the creature was. At first he thought it was a butterfly, but it seemed to have a lizard-like body as opposed to an insects.

Either way, it seemed he'd somehow upset it. He didn't know much about fantasy creatures yet, so he applied what he knew about regular biology. The creature was vibrantly coloured, which typically meant it was poisonous or something. Luckily, he no longer had the organs and such that would be affected by that sort of thing so it was probably okay. As for why it was angry, Carmin guessed it was probably a mother and had a nest nearby or something. It definitely didn't want him going through that area at least. With this in mind, he apologized and decided to go around. "Uh, sorry."

This was a good reminder of how he needed to brush up on the wildlife around this island. He was just lucky that his position on the food chain likely kept him out of the eyes of serious predators. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said about the insects, which buzzed as loudly as ever, slowly driving Carmin to the brink of insanity. He then got up and started walking to the side, around the butterfly lizard. Or at least he tried to.

Kahi's approach had been too sudden and loud, apparently, since she startled the creature so badly it fell down. Kahi felt slightly regretful, her kind usually conversed at this volume and she wasn't used to interacting with these humanoids. The creature looked shocked, and Kahi considered landing on him or near him to look less threatening. But Kahi didn't know how the humanoid would react, or if it was aggressive, so she decided to keep fluttering in the air.

The humanoid got up, said a word she didn't understand and tried to go past her, in the wrong direction again. Kahi flew in front of it and repeated "No" again, but this time in a quieter, calmer voice. Kahi couldn't properly remember any other useful words that she could use to communicate with the humanoid. So she tried pantomime. Kahi held her front paws up and shook her head, trying to gesture "Don't go there", and then she pointed towards the body of water and nodded her head, as in "Go there".
Hopefully the creature would understand.

As quickly as Carmin could begin walking, he was brought to another abrupt stop. The same butterfly lizard had flown in front of him yet again. He was starting to get annoyed, when he heard the creature say no, very clearly in a rather calm tone. It could speak? Just how intelligent was this creature?

"What exactly do you need?" Carmin wasn't used to this type of interaction, he wasn't even sure the creature could understand him. Heck, there was a strong possibility that he was just starting to lose it. Regardless, the creature seemed to be... miming?

With that, Carmin found himself, a plant, playing charades with a tiny butterfly lizard, in the middle of the woods on a magical island to an audience of a few hundred flies. This was his life now.

With a deep breath, Carmin avoided having a meltdown and tried to make out what the lizard wanted to tell him. It seemed like they wanted him to turn around, but Carmin still didn't know why. What if this was some sort of trap? He gave the creature an unsure look then pointed in the direction opposite of where he was heading and nodded at them. He was going to have to trust this random creature he'd encountered in the middle of the woods. It was a better lead than heading in some random direction at least. And so, he turned around and started walking back, with the flies following suit.

This time Kahi didn't startle the creature, and it actually calmed down enough to observe what she was trying to convey. It got through, because the humanoid pointed in the direction she had and nodded, proceeding to walk that way. Kahi nodded a few times too before the humanoid turned around, and then for a moment watched as it walked away. This should be the end of her role, Kahi should just fly away and leave the creature to its own devices after receiving a nudge. But...all those delicious flies were still following it, and Kahi had been going to that direction. So hesitantly Kahi followed the humanoid, fluttering around it a safe distance away, snatching away a fairly large amount of flies. But in the end the bugs weren't all that filling even for someone Kahi's size, and even when half the flies were gone she kept eating, and perhaps simultaneously making life easier for the humanoid, it had not seemed happy with being surrounded by flies just minutes ago.

Carmin had only been walking a short ways when he started to feel less... swarmed? The bugs were easing off and leaving him alone a little? There were still tons of them, but it somehow felt like there were less. That's when Carmin turned to the side a little and saw the butterfly lizard from earlier snatch one up. "Huh?!" At first he was a little surprised. They'd been following him all this time and he had no clue.

Although, on second thought, it really wasn't a bad thing. If they were just eating the bugs then it was actually pretty helpful. The only thing that concerned him was his inner voice making him think the creature was up to something.

The idea that he was being led right to this lizard's leader so that he could be eaten came back to mind. Though it didn't make much sense considering there was perfectly good plants all around him that would serve the same purpose. Unless they were going to use him as some kind of bug magnet. Tie him up with a rope and have him act as their personal food source for the rest of his life.

Carmin's own head was capable of thinking up pretty wild things about others. So, in order to put an end to those thoughts, he decided to confront the creature again.

He waved at them and walked over slowly. Quietly whispering "Hey little guy" despite being fairly confident that they didn't understand him. He then made a sad attempt at asking the creature why they were following him. He put out his arms with his hands facing up and motioned while saying "Why?" then pointed at them and said "Are you" then attempted to make two walking people with his fingers and moved them from one side of his head to the other while saying "Following" and finished by pointing at himself and saying "Me". The entire charade was pretty poorly acted out. It would be a miracle if the creature understood half of what he was saying.

The creature kept walking in the right direction during the short time it didn't notice Kahi's presence and she got to eat in peace. But when the flies' numbers lessened significantly the creature clearly took notice, and turned around. It seemed surprised to see Kahi, even though she hadn't tried to be all that stealthy. Perhaps the creature had been too distracted.

It was Kahi's turn to be surprised, when the creature suddenly tried approaching her. Slowly while waving, and Kahi observed the creature. It didn't show signs of aggression, and it was small and looked rather weak. Kahi was confident that if it tried something she would be able to retaliate. Which was why she let him almost a meter away before she fluttered further away, making it clear that was close enough.

Lately Kahi had been treated like a wild animal so often, so that when she heard the creature's tone while it talked to her it irritated her. Kahi was an intelligent creature, probably even more intelligent than this humanoid, and she trilled a bit in annoyance. Nevertheless Kahi tried to make sense of what the creature was trying to say with its miming, she recognized two words, "you" and "me". The other words were unknown to her, so she concentrated on the gestures that the creature made while saying them. The first word and gesture didn't make any sense to Kahi, but the word before "me", the longer one, has a more understandable gesture. Most probably "follow", or "come after" or "walk". You...follow...me, and the creature's tone sounded like a question. Was it asking why Kahi was following it? How should she explain that to it?

It took a while for Kahi to piece this all together, almost a minute, during which she just fluttered in place with a small frown on her face, in thought. But after a while she came up with a simple and probably understandable answer, and she fluttered just a bit closer so the creature would see.
"Me"
Kahi said in the creature's language, with a heavy accent but hopefully it was understandable. She did also point at herself for clarification.
"Hungry"
Kahi said, this time in her own language, and the word sounded like a combination of a quiet screech and a purr. Kahi pointed at her open mouth and rubbed her stomach with her other foot, indicating hunger. And next Kahi gestured at all the flies still buzzing around the creature, and to accent her point that they were her food she snatched one with her tongue and ate it.
