For once, he was in over his head.

He was way in over his head. Standing in one of the most active places on the island, with no idea how to get anywhere... And no way to communicate with anyone. Ayato realized right then that he had screwed up in not taking the chance to learn English with the human students who took care of the shrine. Then again they would have run away from the electric weasel given that he did not have the human form he did on this island. All he could speak was Japanese and as of right now, he realized that maybe not as many people spoke it as they did back home. When in Japan, people spoke Japanese - who would have guessed? The Raiju had always had a narrow vision, and only knew of other countries by some of the conversations that came from the people who came to the shrine as they came or went.

The Raiju felt exasperated, frustration having a hold on his mind and anger creeping up slowly behind it. How was he supposed to get to the Academy now? He had no idea where it was - he could not just run there like how he usually got around. And he had no idea where all of the electrical lines ran, so going through those was not even worth getting lost in.

"For the love of--!!! Why don't any of you speak Japanese? Or even have something to translate?!" The Raiju yelled in frustration, leaving yet another irritated civilian behind as he stocked off. Was there not a magic user who could use something to translate for him? Or maybe someone who just spoke Japanese? Or maybe a map he could find without being accused of theft? The fitful teen kicked a piece of loose concrete, bitter over the whole ordeal.

"And of course no one can lead me to the Academy. For the love of Shinto, I am going to get in trouble because no one can even speak a reasonable language around here. What good is being able to attend a place you cannot get to?" Hissed the teen to himself, the Japanese spilling out of his mouth swiftly as he ranted to himself.

The island was multicultural, but in effect that really meant everyone speaks English. It was the lingua franca of the island, the language everyone fell back on when pressed. There were probably more native speakers of other languages--there were a lot of Chinese folks in particular--but English had been so dominant in the business world that it simply made sense for the island to follow suit as well.

So Naoko was a tad surprised when she heard someone yelling in Japanese. She wasn't doing much, just walking back to the school after doing some christmas shopping, but the sudden outburst drew her attention even if she normally went out of her way to avoid Japanese things.

Someone needed help, she decided. There wasn't any other reason for someone to be yelling about why no one spoke Japanese, and Naoko stared at the gawkers for a moment before cutting right through them.

"Japanese isn't a reasonable language," Naoko declared, only catching a bit of the boys frustrated rant. The boy looked to be around her age, although he definitely wasn't human, with two animal ears poking up over his head making that very clear. "It has too many characters, and the entire point of Katakana is stupid."

The boy had not gotten lucky, even if he had found someone whose first language was Japanese.
