Long Journeys and a Tour

Yariel looked inquisitively at the abandoned desk. Her gaze panned about the area to see where the receptionist had poofed off to. She felt a bit vulnerable just sitting here waiting for some person to finally tell her where she was suppose to be going. Slowly turning a locket in her hand, she awaited to find if they would return back from...Well, the bathroom? She wasn't really sure about anything going on in the school, so she felt it was best to just wait here until they arrived. Yariel had the sneaking suspicion that if she left some tour bus of new students might pop up and the receptionist will arrive, and it would take far too long to get situated on this island.

A slight tug on the chain which carried her dog tag reminded her of why she was here in the first place. She sighed softly after a while, and tucked the dog tags back under her shirt. Peeking about until she spotted a reclusive sitting spot, and began to just ever so slowly 'meld' into the environment that surrounded her. At least, that's what she likes to think she looks like when she just sits all by herself. Perhaps somebody would show up eventually; until then, Yariel waited patiently in her little cozy spot. Keeping her head in a book she had brought from home with her as she let the world tune out around her.

Ophion didn't actually work in the office, but he was there often enough that he might as well have. He was constantly dropping in to pick up kids who needed tours, and when he wasn't doing that he was in the office half the time anyway. Considering the damage to the library (and his poor, poor precious primary sources), he was spending more time in the office then ever.

He didn't even notice the girl when he headed inside, finding the secretary absent. He would have liked to have thought it was unusual, but unfortunately it wasn't. The schedule was so unusual that it wasn't terribly surprising to find that a secretary had left the desk empty.

Ophion looped his way around the secretaries desk, leafing through the pile of new arrivals at the school, completely oblivious that if he'd looked, he'd have been able to find one in line of sight.
@MrChadington - sorry for the delay!

Yariel lifted her eyes up from the pages of her book, spotting a strange looking man over near the receptionist desk. He appeared official enough, or at the very least he knew what he was doing. She softly creased a page on her book and set back inside her bag before toting it with her to the mysterious stranger.

She had been stepping rather softly, not too strange for her, and made the assumption the man hadn't realized she existed yet. So, she gave a light tap on his shoulder to garner his attention so that she may ask him if he knew where the receptionist was, or anything for that matter.

It was a damn good thing Ophion didn't have anything that might have might have even resembled combat training, because as it was he whipped around and nearly elbowed the mysterious tapper in the face, scrambling backwards and ending up clutching the desk for support to keep himself from falling over.

Unfortunately, none of his snake heritage resulted in an improved sense of balance.

He stood there, staring at the girl in front of him wide eyed before he abruptly realized she was trying to get his attention. He gave a little cough, writing himself as he tried to look less composed and more like he'd just had an undignified freak out, and then straightened his shirt.

"Uh, sorry about that. I - uh, can I help you?" Not the best recovery he'd ever managed.

Yariel reeled back to dodge the man's elbow, taking a couple steps back as she raised her hands. She watched silently as he righted himself, and lowered her hands when the man asked if he could help.

"Oh - could ye give me directions or anythin'? Terribly lost."

She hefted the bag she was carrying in her right arm, looking quite new with the luggage. Yariel carefully, in light of the man's freakout, stretched her arm out to expose her hand for a friendly gesture of a shake.

She certainly had an accent, although Ophion couldn't have hoped to place it. All the accents and things were completely lost on him. He'd never left the island, and his grasp on geography was... challenged, to say the least. He could manage history, but actually placing countries on a map? No good.

"Well, you're in the right place." If she was looking for a tour like he thought, then she'd found the right person. He reached out, giving her offered hand a firm shake.

"My name is Ophion Hughes - I do tours for hte island, if you're interested." He turned slightly, eyes sweeping over the desk before he found the required clipboard, grabbing it and holding it out to her with a pen.

"Sign at the bottom to show I'm giving you the tour, and then I'll get you to your dorm so you can drop off luggage."

Yariel perked up a bit at the offer of a tour and finding her dorm; those two needs she needed quite desperately so she could figure out this whole new island thing. Obviously the company that had sent her here had told her two or three things, but she never got any clear picture of what was going on. They even told her to be careful about the 'culture shock' she would have, but she had no idea what they meant yet.

Yariel realized she was staring off into space, and just barely remembered to introduce herself as she took the clipboard from the man to write her name down.

"Yariel Kearney, nice to meet ye Mr. Hughes." She warmly spoke as she finished her signature. Giving a slight bow as she wondered what the dorms here were like.

The accent was so perplexing to him. People's accents tended to fade off the longer they were on the island, blending into the islands own relatively neutral one.

Or at least it was neutral for him.

"Nice to meet you too. I should let you know, if you've got any questions, feel free to ask. The tour's mostly for function rather than intended to be actually interesting. I've been pushing for a more culturally-focused tour for new arrivals, but so far it's just the basics." He explained, gesturing out of the office and hoping she'd follow as he headed out into the hallways, towards the dorms.

"Dorms are pretty university standard from what I know. You'll have a single shared area, and then individual bedrooms. Depending on your luck you might have a roommate or two with their own rooms." Some people preferred roommates, some preferred to live the solo life. It really depended on how bad their roommates were in a lot of cases.

"You're from... europe?" A rough guess, and probably wrong. He was truly terrible with accents.

Yariel nodded as he offered to answer questions and explained the purpose and intention of the tour. She hadn't any specific questions just yet, and followed in step with the man as he began walking out in the hallway. Trying not to rattle or mess up anything in her bags as she went along.

The prospect of security and privacy within the dorms excited Yariel, due to her secretive nature. She still had to figure out exactly how she would store all her belongings once she got there, how they'd be arranged, what color pattern would go good with the wall. Yariel nearly even ran into the man in front of her a couple times by accident she was so lost in thought.

"Lil' island off Scotland, like. Bit more west than ye'd have been expectin' suppose. But, do have a question of my own. Heard strange things about this place, like. Stranger they get, more silent the speaker. Ye got any idea on that?" She spoke, awaiting for a more clear answer than she was ever told by her employers.

Ophion couldn't help but squint a bit when she asked about strange things. Ophion had lived on the island his whole life, so his version of 'strange' was not quite the same as everyone else's. There really wasn't very much that he could think of that he'd personally describe as strange, but he had given enough tours to be able to take at least a rough guess at what she was talking about.

"Well - you probably got a letter, right?" Most people did, and that explained at least the basics. "That'll give you a solid idea. But... basically, all the stuff you kind of assumed was fantasy isn't. Gods, aliens, mythological creatures, magic... pretty much all par for the course here." Nothing unusual about it if you'd grown up there. "Pretty much everyone has some kind of magical talent or connection to the supernatural, although a lot of newcomers think it's kind of rude to ask because they're used to hiding things. Like, I'm half-naga, so I've got a bunch of stuff that goes with that."
