Nothing beat the crackling of an open fire after a hunt. The deer they had hunted was roasting over it, pieces of meat skewered of cleaned and sharpened three branches. Ava had brought along her mother's spice mix that she had used on the meat she hunted since she was a kid, it would make the meat taste amazing. Ava had rubbed it all over the meat pieces. Now all she and Isstar had to do was wait.

The hunt had been a good way for Ava and Isstar to reconnect, Ava was really in her element in the woods, running through them after a prey. The deer on the island were faster than the ones in her home woods and offered a bit more of a challenge, too.
Sauron was laying between Ava and Isstar, happily gnawing on a leg bone he'd been given from the deer, his tail wagging. Ava occasionally coaxed the fire under the deer with her bare hands (she didn't feel a thing) and otherwise just leaned back and enjoyed the scent of the evening forest.

"You're a bit rusty, I bet I could've caught 10 deer in the time it took you to take down one."
Ava said teasingly and grinned at Isstar. They'd each hunted one deer, and though Ava had hunted hers first Isstar hadn't been that far behind. The open fire they'd set up was a pretty big one, since they needed to roast both deer on the spot. Ava still had too much leftover meat at home.

Isstar hadn't hunted in a few months, and ever since he came back to the island, he had been trying to stalk in the woods to get his edge back. Unlike Liun, who hadn't enjoyed hunting in years, Isstar felt it brought clarity to his mind, and in the sub two years of his life, he gained an appreciation for the act of it. However, for the past while, he had only been able to hunt in human form. It was risky to try and properly hunt as a dragon in the narrow reality, so he didn't try it.
Back on the island, however, he once more could. When deciding to hang out with Ava and the subsequent decision to hunt, Isstar was excited. Having Ava around made him feel a surge of competitive spirit, and he believed that was what pushed him on as he made the kill of a deer. Though, Ava was faster plus hers was an older, therefore harder to catch, deer.

Ava brought the young dragon out of his thoughts, quickly looking at her with a casual grin. "10? Sure if you found 9 sick and dying ones surrounding the one you caught." He shrugged while he leaned back on his hands. Isstar realised it had been a while since he hung out with people his age (technically), and was really enjoying the atmosphere. Ava was someone he initially somewhat disliked, considering her a challenge he'd eventually beat. But, his temper had been mellowed, and Isstar wholeheartedly considered her a friend.

"Besides, I'm not some massive lava spitting dragon like you. I've got to use stealth and strategy when I hunt." He harrumphed, looking away from Ava pointedly. Although he seemed to sulk, his body language was relaxed and he had an easy smile on his face. "Though, this has been nice. It's been months since I got to go out and hunt like a dragon again." Isstar glanced sideways at Ava with a genuine smile. "Thanks to coming out with me."

Ava snorted at Isstar's retort and leaned forward to rearrange the coals again.
"Please, you would've taken forever even if your deer had been sick and dying."
Ava continued teasing lightly, but there wasn't bite in it. She was just feeling chill and good, hanging out with one of her best friends. Ava had recently realized that she had pretty many friends, but Ava never stopped feeling like it was a miracle for someone like her to have friends. Ava never stopped feeling grateful for it.

"Bitch, I don't hunt in dragon form, the whole forest would go down in flames."
Ava pointed out with a snicker and a roll of eyes. She hunted partially shifted, her dragon form was really inconvenient for small and medium game hunting. Isstar didn't fool her for a second though, Ava knew the guy was just kidding.

"Wow, the great grump Isstar just said thanks."
Ava said jokingly and snorted, but she soon returned the genuine smile 'cos she could see Isstar was being genuine as well.
"Sure thing, dork. I gotta make sure one of my best buddies doesn't get too rusty, can I?"

“What’s the point in rushing anyway? Taking your time to ensure the hunt is a success is obviously a mark of a good hunter.” Isstar closed his eyes as he spoke with a matter of fact tone, but he had a smirk. In the time he’d been gone, he’d actually caught on how to joke more easily with people. Though occasionally his straightforward and logical side case out still. He was only a year and a half old, after all. It was to be expected he hadn’t caught on to everything.

He looked at Ava, tilting his head. It was a gesture unique to himself, not one he gained from Liun. It was so unconscious for him to do it. “I know, but you’re still lava spitting. Quite the brute, if I say so myself.” The younger dragon shook his head, a chuckle escaped his lips.

“Life is too short to be an asshole to everyone.” Isstar felt like being sincere. Ever since he came back to the island to resume his effort of extending his lifespan, he’d realised how much he wanted to make memories and spend time with people. Isstar’s existence was already one where he tried to live with no regret, but it felt even more important than ever. With an ache in his chest, he looked away from Ava again, a more solemn look on his face. It wasn’t an expression he usually had. Even Isstar’s normal neutral expression, he’d be frowning out of confusion. “Ava, what do you want to do in the future?” He eventually spoke. His eyes were focused on the fire though, the flames dancing in his red eyes.

“Like, in your future time at school, or after high school, or what career you want to do, just... what do you want to do in life?” His voice held w seriousness to it. Then, Isstar let out a dry chuckle. “Feels weird I was gone for... 7 months. Roughly. Spent my very first birthday off island, and honestly I’d forgotten. I didn’t even realise the day until Liun texted me.” Isstar rambled, the overall look upon him was wistful.

Somehow the way Isstar proclaimed the shortness of life brought a weird, ominous feeling to Ava's gut. She turned her head and looked at Isstar with a frown. He was looking away and the expression on his face was sad and foreboding. Ava opened her mouth to ask what was up with him, but then Isstar asked about the future.
"Uh, I was just gonna go to college and study to be a vet and forest ranger and make a wildlife sanctuary."
Ava explained, usually she would've been more passionate while explaining her plans for the future but she was too distracted by the shift in the mood. Even Sauron had stopped gnawing on his bone and was looking at the pair with slumped ears.

Isstar began to ramble a bit, talking about his time off the island, and something in his voice was so sad that it made Ava feel kinda sad too. Sure, Isstar wasn't exactly all sunshine and rainbows but something was obviously up. Once it looked like Isstar had reached a midway point in his tangent Ava spoke up.
"Isstar, did something happen when you were away? What's up with you?"
Sure, it was maybe bit too blunt, but Ava wasn't good with being subtle. She wasn't fucking Wynne. But Ava's voice held concern and so did the frown on her brow, as she looked at Isstar up and down in worry.

Isstar smiled to himself as Ava mentioned her plans. It sounded just like her, wanting to be out in nature even as part of the career she wanted. His eyes hadn't strayed from looking into the fire, a hollow like emotion in his chest. He didn't know how he wanted to spend his limited days. The nature of his existence was hard to solve, as the reason for his limited lifespan wasn't purely biological but rather something encoded into every fibre of his being on every level. Tampering with it had the risk of immediately killing him.
An overconfident teenage dragon as he was, Isstar feared death.

"Having a wildlife sanctuary sounds exactly like something you'd do." Isstar fondly chuckled. "I bet you'll do it with no problem." He nodded, giving Ava a small smile that had a hint of sadness to it. Isstar had no idea if he'd ever see the day that happened for Ava. "You'll still get sticks in your hair though, I think." He tried to grin casually, but it came off as forced.

He simply sighed when Ava asked the question. Isstar in turn was fairly blunt, and preferred straightforwardness. "Not really. I had a good time off island." He confessed as he shrugged. "I'm just feeling nostalgic and sentimental. You'll go far in life, Ava, I know it." Isstar looked upon her face with that same solemn seriousness.

His eyes turned back to the fire, his head leaned backwards to let him glance at the sky. "I appreciate what you and others on the island have done with treating me, but I am fundamentally a product. I was simply the first copy they made of Liun Rukt'In, not a living thing. When you make a product like me, you want it to last long enough you can get an idea of what it's like, but not long enough it becomes a drain if it's not worth it." Isstar had a neutral tone to his voice, in fact it almost bordered on a bored sound. "A product has an expiration date. I got around two years and a few days. I'm around a year and half right now. I've known from the beginning it'll be February I'll expire anyway." It was hauntingly casual how Isstar spoke. He hadn't told many about his lifespan, for fear and irritation it would make them pity him. Yet here, after the time he'd known Ava, Isstar had just so offhandedly mentioned he was doomed to die in only 7 months.

Isstar was talking like a dying man and Ava didn't like it one bit. She stayed quiet out of respect but the more Isstar spoke Ava's frown became that much deeper and her anger rose. How fucking dare Isstar call himself a product? No one called Ava's friends something like that, not even they themselves. And Ava was ready to say as much, she was ready to punch Isstar and stop him to talk shit like that. But then Isstar got to the part about an expiration date and Ava realized that...he was serious. Isstar didn't make messed-up jokes like this and though he spoke casually Isstar's expression was serious. Ava's face immediately went loose and blank, as the shock settled in.
Isstar...was going to die. He was going to die in half a year or so.

Ava didn't react for a while, she just stared at Isstar without actually looking at him. Her mind was racing as her thoughts tried to desperately gather themselves. Now, normally people would probably cry when they heard something like this. They'd cry, they'd ask questions, they'd pity. But Ava wasn't normal. Instead, the moment Ava's mind and thoughts became whole again her frown returned, and a growl crept up from deep in her throat. She felt nothing but anger. Sauron instinctively whined and inched away from her, as heat began to rise from her.
Ava stood up in quick, jerky movements, walked away from the fire and with a loud roar hit the closest big object (a tree) with all her strength. The tree never stood a chance; the impact created a big cloud of smoke and cinders and once the smoke settled there was only a smoking stump left of the tree. The trunk, branches and leaves had all burned away.

Ava breathed heavily before the tree stump, staring at the ground with her face twisted up in anger. Her fists were clenched so tightly her nails punctured the skin on her palms. But Ava didn't notice, she was desperately battling against her anger. Anger was Ava's base instinct, it was her first reaction to most things. But Ava knew she shouldn't be just angry now, and she was having a battle with herself.
Eventually, after few minutes of heavy breathing the intense heat Ava had been emitting slowly died down. Ava turned around, but didn't go closer to Isstar yet. Instead she glared at Isstar from few meters away, now her expression was a mix of anger, confusion and anger.

"What the fuck am I supposed to say?"
Ava said in a low, dangerously serious tone, her voice breaking in the middle of the sentence. It wasn't a serious question, it was more like a thought spoken out loud. Ava had thought that Ysolda losing her eye because of her had seriously messed her up, but that was nothing compared to this.

“Ava...?” Isstar asked in confusion after she growled. She was angry? Why was she angry? He didn’t understand why, didn’t understand why someone would get upset over this information. It’s not like they were the one dying, Isstar just didn’t want someone to pity or worry over him. He could feel the air heating up, Isstar flinched from the magical heat. Although he didn’t have a heat or fire weakness characteristic for his family, Isstar did have a weakness for general magic and the heat was just a bit uncomfortable.

He quickly stood up as Ava did, he looked at her worriedly. “Ava, what’s-“ Isstar’s words and attempt to get closer to her was promptly cut off by Ava destroying a tree with a roar. It was at that moment Isstar decided he wouldn’t get too close, at the risk he could end up like that tree stump. He was sturdy but that was not how he wanted to spend the rest of his day.

Isstar stood at the edge of where the air heated up, his feet shuffled as he tried to figure out what to do. He never had to try and comfort someone like this before... He waited while she cooled down, hesitating in trying to get closer, until Ava turned to look at him. After her question, Isstar simply inhaled. “Nothing. You don’t have to say anything. Just... don’t pity me.” He spoke lamely.

“I’m not a product to you, or anyone else on the island, but it doesn’t change I was made as one. I knew I was going to die in two years before I even knew how to walk.” Isstar sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. He had a calm look on his face, one brought on by how much he had thought about it.

"How can you be so-?!"
Ava started to yell, but then cut herself off and forced herself to take deep breaths. Ava was baffled at how Isstar could be so fucking calm about this. He was going to die! Sure, this was a magical island where fuckers came back every day. And this guy had the smurfs backing him up, they should be able to help him, if not before he died then after. Ava knew that, she fucking knew all that. She wasn't stupid. But death was...it couldn't be pleasant. Ava realized that Isstar must've thought about it a lot, his death. That's why he could be so fucking calm. That's why he spoke about it like it was normal. But that didn't change the fact that it pissed Ava off!

"I won't pity you. Pity is fucking pathetic."
Ava said after she spent another few minutes sorting out her thoughts, her voice was still wavering from both anger and something akin to sorrow.
"But I will say something. How could I fucking not when you just said you'll die!"
Ava gritted her teeth and lifted her hands to her face, the wounds on her palms had already healed. She rubbed her face roughly and let out a loud sigh.
"First of all, never fucking ever again call yourself a product in front of me. Dying or not I'll punch your teeth in so hard you'll shit them out. Doesn't matter if I or anyone else doesn't think you are, you can't think so either."
Ava almost growled and looked at Isstar with flaming, determined eyes.
"And you better not fucking die even if you do. Even if your body quits on you you better come back later, if you don't I'll come after you wherever your soul goes and drag you back myself. This is fucking Manta Carlos, it lets complete assholes come back so if it won't let my friend come back I'll burn the entire place down."
And if Isstar knew Ava at all he also knew that she meant it.

"Calm? I mean, I guess cause it's the first thing I knew?" Isstar sighed while he scratches his head. He'd be lying if he said he had always kept his head regarding his limited life. "But I'm not really completely calm. I am scared, of dying." He groaned to himself. Isstar felt it could have been possible he wouldn't have been scared, if he had been used in the way he was made to be, but living on the island made that impossible. So, Isstar feared death.

He frankly breathed a sigh of relief. "Good. I hate people thinking I'm so fucking tragic and unfortunate." Isstar growled under his breath. "Any medical staff I had when I first came to the island knew. There was always that... look of pity in their eyes." Isstar recalled when he was brought to the island. Even though at the time he hadn't understood the emotion as pity, he knew they looked down at him like he was helpless. Tagged along with his inherent aggression, and it caused Isstar to lash out, landing him right into the islets.

Isstar looked taken aback as she continued. Ava was genuinely angry and upset about the fact he was going to die. It made Isstar feel... something. He couldn't identify it right away, a frown appeared on his face from confusion. But, he pushed the thought back right then, focused on Ava in front of him. He tried to open his mouth to protest, about his calmness of the situation, about his usage of calling himself a product, but Isstar just sighed and shook his head. There was no point, Ava wouldn't accept anything Isstar would say in regards to it.

"Better not die even if I do? That's pretty contradictory." Isstar deadpanned. With a hissing intake of breath, he looked away from Ava. "I've been trying to find solutions for it ever since I left the islets. It's just, harder to solve. Not as simple as wishing it away. It's tied to my very existence, completely and fundamentally. But, there's no way I'll take it lying down." He looked back to Ava, his own gaze equally determined, his eyes held a sharp coldness to them that reflected his nature as an ice dragon. "I'm gonna find something. I'd prefer not to die, but, well, there are ways to go about it after the fact." He gave a reassuring smile at his friend.
