Frederick was tired, and he no doubt looked it. Despite putting the usual amount of care into his appearance as he always did, there were bags under his eyes and a general air of exhaustion around him. He was very, very tired.

He'd picked a booth in the corner of the restaurant, asked for waters for both of them, and then settled into wait. He'd arranged the whole thing with Phoenix, and he felt at least a grain of hope that talking with someone from the island--someone with an outside perspective--might be able to give him the kick he needed.

How long before he ended up dead, anyway?

Phoenix glanced down at her phone as she arrived in front of the restaurant, humming and putting it away when she affirmed that she was in fact late, and by twenty five minutes. The average person may have fretted over this, but the young woman Frederick had agreed to meet hadn't gotten hung up over things like that in a long time. She locked her bike and headed inside, adjusting the strap of her bag and looking around the cafe, and she smiled softly when she spotted him and headed on over.

Phoenix slid into the booth and grabbed her water right away, sipping it and pulling her hair back into a ponytail before she spoke. "Heya, sorry for the wait. Work's been pretty hectic with the promotion we have going on, which...well, I can't really complain given I was the one who brought up the idea. Ended up sleeping in a little later than intended." Phoenix was still smiling gently despite taking notice of how worn out the older of the two looked in contrast, taking another drink of water and raising a brow. "Speaking of that, though, it doesn't look like you've been treating yourself right as far as rest goes. Are you doing alright? I mean, other than the thing we came here to talk about."

Truth be told, Frederick had mostly written her off by the time Phoenix actually arrived. He was used to a certain level of punctuality, and twenty five minutes late was not it. But it wasn't as if he had anywhere better to be. He had no classes that day, his classwork was done, and he had no job to speak of. The citizens of Halcyon City were being scattered, spreading out and settling in, and that meant there was less for him to do as far as volunteer work went.

He was starting to run on empty.

So he stuck around, ordering some food, and was pleasantly surprised to spot Phoenix gliding in, sliding into the booth before he could even offer his hand.

"Oh, it's good to see you. I was wondering if you were delayed," he said. "My sleep's been fine, but I'm afraid I got some unfortunate news which complicates matters... quite a bit."

To say the least. It complicated matters and then some.

"Someone made the comment that I must have an equivalent on this world, and someone else mentioned he used to live here. Since he was a resident, I looked him up and found he'd moved to London. Obviously I couldn't contact him, but I never got the chance anyway. As it turns out, he was murdered a few months ago."

...Well then. That information was considerably heavier than what Phoenix was expecting for the subject matter of their get together, at least right off the bat. She got the sense that they would likely broach some less than happy topics, but nothing like this. "Woah. That's...yeah. I can't really fault you for being stressed over that. I'm sorry to heart that you...sort of you died?"

She blinked for a moment, stirring her straw through the ice water and listening to the gentle clinking of the cubes against the glass. "Though, people in general can be pretty evil. I'm not sure it's a good idea, realistically speaking, to think of it as anything other than coincidence, you know?"

Frederick hadn't even mentioned the real crux of the issue, but it was obvious she was uncomfortable just the same.

"No," he said with a shake of his head. "Unfortunately, I can't believe it was a coincidence. The timing of the murderer, combined with other factors that they reported on in the reports I read make it very unlikely that the murder was an accident."

He couldn't believe that. It was like someone tripping an accidentally spelling out I'm going to kill you with the splash. It just didn't happen.

"I'm surprised to hear you say something like 'people can be pretty evil'," Frederick confessed. "I expected you to be more of the optimistic type."

"...Damn." Phoenix rubbed her chin thoughtfully, not entirely sure how to spin this in an optimistic light. Frederick seemed like a nice enough guy, polite. She definitely felt like he was usually more put together than this. "That's...yeah. I can see why you would be alarmed." She kept on stirring her water, the quietly clinking glass serving as ambiance for the already grim conversation.

A bit lost in thought over the whole ordeal, it took her a moment to register what he had said, and she met his gaze once again with a few quick blinks. "Oh, huh? The evil thing, yeah...I get that kind of thing often. Like, I'm a pretty optimistic person, but there's a fine line between that and just plain naivete." She rolled her shoulders back in a shrug, brushing a bit of hair out of her face. "People are cruel, or at least they can be. I know that as well as anyone."

That was surprising, but it let the conversation be, at the very least, slightly less grim.

"It's important to focus on the positives as much as possible," he agreed, "but also to recognize that people are capable of truly awful things. I saw a lot of that, in my job, and it was always important to focus on the positives. It's too easy to get caught up in the negatives."

But even as he said it, his expression was still dark, and after a moment, he shook his head.

"At the very least I don't think there would be blowback on someone I was socializing with. Otherwise I'd have cancelled the meeting entirely."

Phoenix hummed softly, taking another quick sip of her water and finally getting around to perusing the cafe's menu, absently skimming as Frederick talked. "I definitely agree about the value of a good outlook on things. Half the battle is fought in your own mind, after all. And I'm not worried about anyone's opinion of me coming and talking to you. If they have a problem, they can bring it up in conversation. I'd like to think I'm fairly approachable."

She eventually settled on a typically complex soy latte and a baked cinnamon apple dish, sending in her order the next time their server came by with a bright smile. The young woman's eyes moved back to Frederick's right afterwards, and a gentler smile to match. "Well, despite all that being...less than ideal, let's try to focus on what we came here for. You're trying to understand your son's stance better, right?"

His son's point of view... a part of Frederick doubted it was even possible. How could it be? His son...

Without even meaning it, he'd started frowning, and he shook his head briefly.

"I thought I understood his points, once upon a time. I disagreed, but I thought I understood. He said he wanted no part in the family business. No part in any of the hero or villain stuff. But then he left, and..."

He let out a sigh.

"And then he ran off and became a villain. Worked for some of the worst of the worst."

As carefree as Phoenix seemed most of the time, to assume that she was unobservant would be a significant misjudgement. She studied Frederick's face closely as the man spoke, noting his expressions, his pauses, everything she could to try and piece together more of the situation than she'd be able to gather from his words alone.

She considered her words a moment before speaking, rapping three fingers along the tabletop in a slow rhythm. "..Well. Granted, I know very little about any hero or villain business beyond how our media represents it, but honestly, I'm not sure that really matters all that much. Obviously you two weren't in agreement over what he wanted his life to be focused on." She took a calming breath in through her nose, out through her mouth, and another sip of water. "That's something I intimately understand."
