Ebviony was done. Time and time again they saw children running around the island without supervision, yet Ebviony always had to be watched. Either by their "mom," their siblings, or their babysitter. This needed to be discussed. Ebviony didn't need to be constantly watched like this. The island's rules clearly didn't care if they were watched or not.

When Ms. Forestier was in her bedroom alone, Ebviony knocked on her door gently, but firmly. They didn't even have their dolls with them. This had to be a private conversation between Ms. Forestier and Ebviony. "Ms. Forestier. Are you in there? I want to talk. It's important."

Ms. Forestier, aka Celeste, was sitting cross-legged on the bed in jeans and a pink t-shirt as she marked the last exams and the class projects of her Home Economics students when she heard a soft knock and a very familiar voice at her bedroom door.

"Come on in, Ebviony," Celeste called out as she gathered up a few of the test papers scattered around her on the bed and placed them in a pile.

Ebviony opened the door gently, wearing a grim expression. After entering and closing the door, they made themself comfortable on the floor in front of Ms. Forestier.

Annoyingly, Ebviony was somewhat embarrassed for interrupting Ms. Forestier during what looked to be her working. Adults next to a bunch of papers usually meant something important. But Ebviony refused to apologize. What they had to say was much more important.

"May I leave home? I don't... um... I don't like Manta Carlos. It's confusing."

Watching as her youngest stepped into the bedroom, looking quite serious, made Celeste frown a little, wondering what was up. Had Shale been teasing them, or had Azure taken off to practice his magic, wanting to be left alone and undisturbed?

"Well, if you did leave Manta Carlos, your brothers and I would be very sad," Celeste said as she looked at Ebviony, wondering now what had happened to merit such a request. "And we'd really miss you too," she said, taking her child's concerns seriously as she put all her papers off to the side so that her bed was free.

"Why do you want to leave? Did something happen today?" she asked Ebvion gently.

Ebvion was unaffected by those words. That changed nothing. "You'll move on." Everyone moved on eventually. Even the parents that lost their kids to the Danus Court.

"Nothing happened," they replied unsurely. "I don't like having a babysitter... Other kids don't need one, so I don't either. And I don't like the laws. My court lets me do whatever I want. There's too many rules here."

Okay, Celeste thought. There was a lot to unpack here and she wasn't sure which was the real problem, the babysitter or the island's laws, or even both. Deciding that the laws might be a bit easier to deal with, she started there.

"The laws are for everyone, Ebviony. If there weren't laws on the island, or as many of them, then other people could also do whatever they wanted too, not only you," she started.

"Would you like if, say, there were no laws about stealing and somebody came in and took your dolls without asking?" she asked gently.

Ebvion scowled. This was going to be as complicated to explain to Ms. Forestier as they expected.

"In Mommy's court, we made the rules. If someone stole, they'd lose their hand. Or hands. Or eyes. I'm a Monarch now. I want to be in my court. I want to follow my own rules. I shouldn't be here." Their voice got increasingly higher and whinier. It looked as if they were one moment away from standing up and stomping their foot, but they contended themself with just a squeeze of their shirt.

"Ebviony..." Celeste said in a gentle but firm tone hoping to avert a tantrum. "I know you are a monarch, and I know you want to be in your kingdom," she said as she stared at her youngest calmly. "But for the moment, you are too inexperienced and unprepared to rule by yourself," she stated reasonably.

"Ruling a kingdom is a lot of hard work. Do you remember all the things your mother had to do to make sure you and all others were cared for, happy and generally safe?" she pointed out, hoping to rationalize with them.

Ebviony's eyes widened in rage at Celeste's words. That was enough to cause them to stand up and kick at the floor. "I'm not inexperienced!" they shouted suddenly.

"Mommy taught me how to rule. I helped her. I'm not unprepared. I'm not inexperienced. I'm thousands of years old! A-And... And..." Ebvion began to tear up as they struggled to find the words to express their thoughts. Why was it so hard to get their message across? "I remember what Mommy did for us. I can do it too. And I don't need to rule by myself either."

Celeste just raised an eyebrow when Ebviony started shouting at her, throwing a tantrum of sorts while they were at it. Letting them finish, Celeste pursed her lips together, showing her clear disapproval at they way Ebvion was acting.

"You are inexperienced," she said as she peered at Ebviony. "Monarchs do not stomp their feet and yell at people because they don't get their way," Celeste pointed out as she looked at her youngest calmly.

"When you can learn to control your temper, and talked to me in a reasonable tone, we can discuss you going back to Danaus to visit," she stated firmly, cutting the discussion short.

"Now, what about the babysitter?" she asked, her tone reconciliatory as she tried to change the topic to the other thing that was bothering Ebviony.
