Appearance Description:

Ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties.
I am the thing that goes bump in the night.

Lazarus has no specific appearance in the metaphysical world; most conceptions about boogymen vary from household to household and is simply a non-specific embodiment of terror. This is because he shifts shape to suit the nightmare. However, in the physical world Lazarus has a natural form that he returns to time and time again. Though he has only been for four years, he takes form in the body of a late teen or young adult, his expressions ranging from a possible sixteen to a believable twenty. Tall and thin, he towers at six feet and four inches with some room still to grow. His frame is nearly skeletal but completely humanoid in shape. His skin, though it is human-like, has a slightly grey complexion. Lazarus’ face is long and narrow, full of sharp angles and high cheekbones. His eyes manage to be both too big and wide and also somehow angular. His eyes and irises are black blending with his pupils, appearing as though darkness is bleeding out of them. His nose is narrow and his lips thin, encasing a mouthful of white teeth, each coming to the slightest point (more canine then humanoid). His hair falls in choppy layers around his face and covers his slightly pointed ears. It’s raven black, giving the illusion that there are cerulean highlights.

Lazarus’ torso is long, leading down to a thin waist and jutting hip bones. His legs and arms seem impossibly stretched and his hands are spidery and large, the fingertips ending in black nails. Typically, he chooses to dress in modern human clothing, most often donning dark jeans, dark button down shirts, and heavy boots. When he speaks, it is English but the accent is distinctly Germanic and his voice is neither deep nor high but something in between and almost seems to echo slightly at the end of his words. He is equally attractive in a frightening way and terrifying in an alluring way.

Personality Description: Lazarus’ is clearly born of German decent, and as they are known to be, he too is a stoic figure. He has a sense of humor but it is dry in style and usually accompanied by a deep chuckle instead of laughter. In fact, Lazarus rarely laughs. He is more serious than he is humorous. Generally, he is an incredibly stable figure. He doesn’t anger easily, however, when he does its usually explosive and accompanied by uncontrolled changes in his shape or features. He is intelligent and intuitive, easily makes friends but doesn’t tend to go out of his way to befriend. Generally, he’s the tall, dark, and reserved type.

Powers:
- Blurring the Lines between dream and reality. With patience and concentration, occasionally Lazarus’ power can extend to the real world for physical manipulation, such as inflicting injuries that occurred in the dream onto the sleeper’s physical body. Likewise, he can heal wounds through dream. For example: in the dream he looms over his victim and lashes out with the sharp, claw like nails, slashing across their arm. If he were to apply his power, the victim would jerk awake in pain to find his arm cut, perhaps even bleeding. Because the power is hard to wield, the wounds would likely be far less severe than they appear in the dream. This talent is especially difficult, and newly learned, and so it is something he cannot do often. While he can affect the physical world through the dreams, Lazarus prefers not to do so. He is a nightmare but it doesn’t mean he has a desire to do real, physical harm, rather, he prefers the fear he can inflict in the dream itself.

Species Abilities:
Lazarus has a body in the physical world, as described above, but he can also leave his body behind to enter into people’s dreams. When he leaves the physical world, he leaves his physical body behind like a shell. This, of course, means his body is vulnerable to anyone or anything that happens upon it. He must be careful to leave his body in a safe place.

- Oneirokinesis – a telepathic ability to dreamwalk, dreamweave, or otherwise manipulate the brain during REM to force the sleeper to dream what he wants them to. Lazarus can enter a sleeper’s dreams and suppress them, influence them by manipulating them, observe them without changing them, and even fabricate new ones. This talent extends to day dreams as well, although he has a much harder time manipulating a day dream and he cannot create a day dream from scratch as he can a REM dream. A day dreamer must already be day dreaming whereas a sleeper is already asleep and he need only access the imagination. If a day dreamer brings themselves back to present he is thrust out, just as the moment a sleeper wakes from the nightmare, he is thrown back into his own body. Lazarus’ physical body does not need to be in the same room with the dreamer but he does need to be nearby. There is a reason people tell small children that the bogeyman lives under the bed or in the closet.

- Phobikinesis - the ability to induce and manipulate fears. Lazarus can evoke and increase horror in others causing the target’s brain to release fear-inducing chemicals. The victim’s perception can be altered, causing them to see their environment as ominous even without a nightmare. This talent manipulates the victims emotions directly, not the dream. Lazarus can manipulate this talent in a waking victim but it is nearly impossible in all but the weaker willed. Even in sleeping victims, an exceptionally strong person can probably shake off effects with effort. As with all of his power, his physical body must be nearby his victim.

Physical limitations as they apply to his powers – Lazarus’ body must be close, physically, to his victims in order for his (for lack of better word) spirit to leave his body and enter into their dreams. He must also have a destination in mind. Lazarus can’t wander dreamland searching for a mind to enter. When he leaves his own body he needs a specific destination and he goes straight there. Because he leaves his body behind, he must leave it somewhere safe. If something were to happen to his body while he was inside of a dream, he would be aware but powerless to act until he returned to it. If someone were to kill his body, he would simply cease to exist the instant his body died. If someone were to take his body and move it, the moment the body moved too far (roughly a city block would be that limit) then he would be snatched out of the dream and thrust back into his body. If the sleeper whose dream he was inhabiting were to move away from him, say the sleeper was a passenger in a car and his body was stationary) then he would also be pulled from the dream and thrust into his body, as if he has a leash between his body and his ‘being’ and he cannot pull further then that leashes length.

Biography:

I was the dark cave, I was the shadow in the trees,
I was the bump in the closet and the scrape under the bed.
You’ve heard of the primal scream? That is me!

A bögge, or a bogyman as they are frequently referred to in the United States, is born of fear, not of conception. You could say that Lazarus was willed into being by sheer insistence of his existence by frustrated parents and the blind belief and resulting fear of their children. He was not birthed, he was not created, rather, he simply became. One moment, he was not there and the next, he was thriving in a nightmare, dreamed up by a young German boy who had a particularly vivid imagination coupled with a wildly drastic level of horror at his own imagination and ta-da...add a little bit of pixie dust and you have Lazarus. Ok, maybe not pixie dust, but otherwise that is how he came to be. You could say he is, literally speaking; the things nightmares are made of. The more a nightmare affects a person, the stronger it becomes and the more substance it creates. Over time, the substance and power from that nightmare gave birth to a physical body, one that appeared under the child’s bed. While the child never saw the actual bögge, he now existed in the physical world thanks to that child.

From that moment forward, Lazarus did what nightmares do: he roamed. He moved from home to home, hiding under beds and inside of closets, traveling wherever his name was spoken: bögge. He was sometimes the thing that rustled in the allyway at night and occasionally he was the bump in the night in the dark woods. Lazarus would enter a dream and create a nightmare but almost as often he would use his physical body to bump and thump, stalk or startle. He would leap around a corner at night in the dark, and then be gone just as quickly, leaving his frightened victim to wonder if he had just imagined a monster. He was fulfilled by his nightly rituals, his visitations, until, one night, he bumped into another. This other could do things that Lazarus had never even thought up. He could manipulate dreams, inflict fear in them, and even create nightmares for the dreamer. To this point, Lazarus could only appear in them as an observer, like a monster standing in the corner of a preexisting dream. He could enter dreams but it was the dreamer who ultimately had control. Lazarus wanted that control and so, it was that Lazarus sought out the school that this other mentioned: Starlight Academy. Traveling there immediately, he began his training and studies to become his much coveted something more.
