Aedan Drago

Aedan sat in Nia's dorm, he'd brought her dinner as usual, he'd always enjoyed talking with his surrogate sister. They had a relatively constant schedule, he'd bring her her meal at about the same time every evening when they ate in, but today Nia seemed to be late.

Pulling his phone from his pocket he'd check the time, she was at times a forgetful girl, her memory problems were there, but she'd usually been there on time for this. He'd glance toward the door, his nose twitching slightly, to early to worry, he assumed she was likely in the library again, caught up in her desire to learn.

He'd look over at the stack of books her plate of food sat upon, new ones he'd brought her today, mostly art and poetry books with a few other things mixed in. Aedan knew she loved to read, as did he, his enhanced intelligence was allowing him to get through books quickly as well as push through his college studies at an accelerated rate.

Nia arrived nearly ten minutes late. She wasn't too horribly behind but she didn't like that she had kept Aedan waiting. However, she knew her big brother wouldn't be too upset. She felt quite sure that he wouldn't mind at all. Though he way be worried slightly but there was nothing to worry about. She was perfectly fine.

She entered the dorm, a double with a small sitting area and kitchen, two bedrooms and one bathroom. She shared the space with Cerra, or Color, as Nia liked to call her, but she appeared to not be home as her light was off and her door closed.

She spotted Aedan waiting for her at the table with dinner ready and a stack of books beneath her dinner. She smiled softly. She really did love having him here.

"Hello Aedan. My apologizes for running late. I got caught up at the library. Met such a helpful boy."

There were a few things that would probably catch Aedan's attention. The first was that when Nia entered the room she had moved calmly and she hadn't fidgeted or twitched at all. Usually she always seemed a bit jumpy, like a little girl afraid that the boogy man was going to jump out at any moment.

The second thing was Nia's voice. Usually her speech was broken, full of "ums" and "uh" and other such vocal pauses as she second guessed her words. Instead, her words came out smoothly and even her tone seemed different. Slightly older even.

The final thing, something Aedan would have noticed as she approached him for a hug, were her eyes. There was something different about them. Or really behind them. If he didn't know any better, he might think that an alien had taken over the girls body. But it was still Nia, that was clear in her eyes despite the strange look she had. It was just...different.

Aedan was observant, his glowing eyes were sharp and picked up on a lot, so he immediately noticed something different about her when she entered. The way she moved, the way she spoke, the look on her eyes, she came off as calmer, almost older even, all that combined with the mention of a boy caused him to mentally raise and eyebrow.

Hopping from his seat, he'd crouch down and hug her, smiling a bit, "it's ok, I haven't been waiting long really." Aedan would set her meal on the coffee table, "brought you some new books as well, saw a new bookstore on my way here, so I took a quick look, grabbed a few things."

The young man would take his seat again, his eyes looking over Nia once more, the small girl had always been mature, but this was different. "You said you met someone helpful?" he'd ask, curious and perhaps a little concerned, something strange was going on.

She hugged him and then moved to her seat, quite happy to have dinner with her favorite person in the world.

"I do appreciate how you buy me books Aedan. I think if it weren't for you, I'd never manage to get myself out of the history section this year. It really has become quite consuming but I am almost through everything on the islands history, since it is a rather short span of time it seems. I think it will prove quite valuable once I am elected as auditor for student council."

As if she had simply stated how the sky is blue, Nia picked up her fork and poked into a bite of food before nodding and responding to Aedan's question.

"Yes, a young man named Talion. Probably about your age. He had a very useful mind-healing ability and it seems I have remembered an ability I didn't know I had." She stuck the bite of food in her mouth and chewed, quite unperturbed -almost unaffected if it weren't for the drastic change in personality- by this most unexpected new find.

"Mind healing ability?" he'd raise an eyebrow, he was always suspicious of any mind altering ability, "and you let him use it on you?" His voice and facial expression showed worry and concern, he'd remember the boy's name, just in case he event needed to look into him further.

"That's not safe Nia," it did explain her odd behavior, which was also giving him the strangest sense of deja vu, it was all concerning. "You shouldn't let people you don't know use abilities like that on you, know idea what they'd do or how it'd affect you." He didn't view her as fragile, she was strong, but as someone who'd had his mind twisted he was naturally suspicious of such things.

Sighing a little he'd look her over, "are you feeling ok? Anything different?" even if the boy had good intentions forced healing could go very badly, especially if you aren't ready for certain things.

She finished a second bite of food, "Yes, I let him use it on me. It was a risk but I knew he was safe."

She paused for a moment, the oddness of that statement striking her. She hadn't know it was safe at the time. Thoughts of safety had never crossed her mind but somehow the statement was true. She had known that Talion was safe somewhere deep inside of her. Somewhere that now felt a little less deep.

She gave Aedan a soft smile, "Yes, I am feeling quite fine. It seems he mostly calmed my anxiety. I thought it was just a mood swing at first. I haven't yet gathered enough information to make any definite conclusions but this seems the most likely explanation for the change. It is nothing drastic though and nothing you need to worry about. I feel I lack some background knowledge in brain functioning — reading through the psychology section has taken a back seat to the history section — but I feel there is only a 30% of negative effects."

Nia was slowly slipping closer and closer to her old personality. Her speech was losing its child-likeness and her movements were becoming sharper and more decisive. The scared child who had emerged a few years ago was slipping away, though Nia didn't notice it, and 238J's behavioral patterns were showing themselves.

Unfortunately, Nia had no idea of her past. This lack of information, plus a few key facts from Psychology and the Brain Second Edition, had thrown off her calculation of the possibility of negative effects. In reality, there was a 5% chance that the decrease in anxiety would last beyond a week or two and a 85% chance that mood swings would become more severe and intense for the next three to six months.

He'd raise an eyebrow and the squint at her for just a moment, this was certainly different than the Nia knew. He liked the idea of her becoming less timid as she developed and grew into her own, but this was to fast, and there was something familiar about it all. "Well.....," he'd hum a little in thought, "be sure to tell your therapist about it, so they can make sure everything is ok."

Rubbing his chin, his intelligent mind tried to find the source of the familiarity, but he wasn't able to find any memory of Nia ever acting like this and thinking on it caused his head to hurt after a while. He decided to let it go for now, or try to anyways, it'd stay in the back of his mind, like a mental itch he couldn't reach.

"Wait...where are you getting these numbers?" Nia was smart, he'd always known that, but calculating probability was something very advanced indeed, "are you....are you calculating it all in your head?" A new ability maybe, he himself had enhanced intelligence so it wasn't that unusual.

Nia started to nod through another bite of food but paused, her eyes narrowing in thought as she chewed and swallowed. "I suppose telling him is important. His authority and expertise in the area of brain functioning are impressive." There seemed to be more she was thinking but she left it at that.

"Yes, I am calculating them. I do believe it is something I did manage to remember through the mind healing session. It's an ability I've had, I just didn't remember. Like I mentioned before, it is what will make me the obvious choice for auditor on the student council." She took another bite of food.

Student elections had just begun and she would have a week to put her campaign together before the speeches and then voting. However, she was sure that she would win. It was like a little voice in the back of her head was telling her this was what she needed to do. It was similar to the voice that had told her she was actually over twenty years old. She would have to talk to Color about this.

She had only just decided to run for the student council on her way to dinner. The voice came up in her mind when she passed a sign as she walked through the hallway. There were very few things she felt sure about but this was one of them.

"A...an ability?" he'd ask, looking her over, this wasn't right, she wasn't acting like herself, and this new ability popping please was troubling, "he.....hmmm....yeah something you remembered." He was worried, that much was clear, but there was nothing he could do at the moment.

"Either way....I'm proud of you for running," he'd say, and he was, incredibly proud, despite these strange developments. "You'll have my vote, and I'm confident you'll win the election," give her a reassuring smile.

As they talked, Aedan continued to get the strange sense of familiarity, that itch in the back of his mind, that odd deja vu. He couldn't shake it, so he'd make a mental note of it, and look into it later, though there seemed to be nothing to look into.
