Age: 19

Birthday: August 19th

Gender: Male, though tends to go by they/them

Species: Human (inhabited by gods)

Category: Student

Class: College

Grade: Sophomore

College Major: Double Degree - Archaeology and Anthropology

Appearance Description:

Kieran’s pretty average in height, standing at about 178 centimetres with an average build. He is quite muscular due to the sports he participates in as hobbies, but he is not exactly buff, as he does not work out. He likes to dress nicely, though he does not have much money to spend on clothes. You will usually find him in a button-up, slacks and oxfords, with a knit jumper on the colder days and with the sleeves pushed up on the warmer days. He doesn’t have much variety in clothing, though he does avoid the colour red.

He has the standard dark brown hair and tan skin of a Chinese person who goes out in the sun quite often. His hair is a mess of unruly loose curls and spikes, sticking up in many directions and falling a bit into his forehead, and often he will push his hair back with a bandana to avoid getting hair into his eyes. His eyes are heterochromatic, though that is not the way he was born. One eye is a very dark brown to the point where the pupil is barely visible, while the other is a very pale grey, almost indistinguishable from the whites of his eyes.

When his third eye is activated, another eye opens up in the centre of his forehead. This eye is completely black with no whites or irises. There are moving white swirls within this eye. His third eye lets off a passive glow as well. When the third eye is not activated, all one sees is his forehead.

There is a set of smooth, flat-surfaced stones embedded in his chest, each about the width of a dime. One is black and the other is white.

• Clumsy

Longform:

Kieran is an outgoing, friendly person. He prefers an optimistic outlook on life rather than dwelling on his past or his regrets. He is very warm and friendly and tends to form bonds quickly, feeling equally at ease in the middle of a party or alone, though he does not always like to be the centre of attention. If you are feeling down he can always make you laugh. Kieran is a good friend, generous with his time and his things, sometimes to a fault. He is the type of person who's loud and clumsy, always laughing at his mistakes. He believes in the good of people and tends to be extremely forgiving, never holding a grudge and believing even the worst people can eventually get better with the right guidance. He isn't very sentimental and hates to dwell on sadness or anger, preferring to ignore those emotions in favour for the better, happier ones. He is quite creative and not one to follow the set rules.

However, that is not to say that he doesn't have problems. It seems that it is difficult to get him to take things seriously, though that is not really the case, he just prefers to lighten the mood. This however can lead to some misunderstandings. Often he would rather live in the moment than to plan out his future with detail, and he is quite impulsive, leading to a few mishaps. He also jumps into things into the spur of the moment and lose interest quickly. His generosity and his tendency to trust people without knowing them had not hurt him yet, but if he is in the company of the wrong people these personality traits can turn against him. He doesn't have a habit of thinking before he speaks. He also has some trouble following instructions and rules and this sometimes gets him in trouble with authority figures.

He is quite insecure about himself, but he doesn't let that show. Sometimes jokes and quips made at him can really hurt him, though he will not show it, instead laughing along and making self-derogatory jokes. He has a tendency to be selfless to a fault, as well. Under the D&D classification system he would be Chaotic Good.

Active Abilities:

Third Eye

Kieran possesses a third eye that he can turn on and off at will for unlimited durations. The eye will be visible when it is active, but it still functions if it is covered by a hat or any other object. Third eye limit. Kieran can only activate his third eye for periods of no more than an hour at once. There must be at least a 15 minute buffer zone between activations, and this changed between the amount of time the third eye is activated for, ranging upwards to 12 hours should the time be maximised. If the eye is activated for too long he will gradually lose consciousness. This eye grants two separate abilities.

1. Telepathy:

Kieran’s third eye grants him telepathic abilities. In particular, he is able to view the intentions, thoughts, and current emotions of any sentiment being within a 50m radius of him. Their intentions surround their bodies as a visible mist, with a colour closer to red indicating evil intentions while a colour closer to blue indicates good intentions. To view the detailed intentions he must focus on one person at once. The same goes with current thoughts and emotions. He can view the morality of anybody’s intentions as long as they are within range and his third eye is activated. However, he must focus on one person at once to be able to view their emotions, detailed intentions, and thoughts.

2. Memory Vision

Kieran is able to see the memories of any sentient being in a 50m radius as long as his third eye is activated. To access all of a being's memories Kieran must focus on them, meaning he can only view one being’s memories at once.

Passive Abilities:

Lie detector

Kieran is a walking lie detector. He is able to detect any oral lie that somebody states as long as he can hear it. However, omission does not count as a lie, and if somebody refuses to say anything it does not activate Kieran's lie detecting capabilities.

Precognition

If something that results in a being's serious injury or death or serious damage to an environment is about to occur within 5 minutes and within a 10m radius of Kieran, a red mist will overlay his vision. This mist will not fade unless if the event had been interfered with (will not occur) or if the event takes place.

Immortality

So long as the spirits are bound to him, Kieran cannot age or die of illnesses. He can still be killed through trauma, poisoning or other methods. However, if the stones that are bounding the spirits to him are forcefully cut out from his chest he will start aging normally from that point on.

Weaknesses:

Will of the Gods

Though Kieran has some degree of autonomy, his powers are still driven by the Gods that possess him. This means that if both Gods have a strong intention to do something, it is possible that they will temporarily override Kieran’s autonomy in order to carry out what they think is suitable. The Gods are able to take over for a maximum time of 2 hours, upon which Kieran’s body will fall unconscious. When he awakens he will have no memory of what occurred. The gods are also able to communicate their intentions to Kieran, should there be some serious situation that they wish to intervene with. Kieran can choose not to obey them. However, the Gods will punish him by causing him to suffer headache and nausea. The longer he disobeys these intentions, the more pain he receives until he falls unconscious and the Gods take over.

Can’t speak

Ever since the spirits had taken over, Kieran had lost his ability to speak or make any noises through his vocal cords. He is still able to communicate in other ways such as writing or sign language.

Can't lie

Kieran is actually not unable to lie physically. However, the spirits will punish him when he lies depending on the scale. Headaches are a general consequence to very minor lies or omissions, but larger lies can lead to unconsciousness. He tends to avoid lying.

Aversion of Chinese religious symbols

Kieran has an aversion to some particular symbols from religion and mythology. Namely:

Any object blessed by an “elder in any religion (monks, priests, rabbis) will burn his skin on contact similar to a hot iron. Exposure of longer than 10 seconds will cause burns as severe as second degree, while exposure of 20 seconds or longer will lead to third degree burns.

Any object that is red in colour (but not digital displays showing the colour red) will also burn his skin on contact, though it will not be as severe as religious objects. Exposure of longer than a minute will cause second degree burns.

A holy verse from any religion written on paper taped to a door will prevent him from entering at all, not even through methods such as teleportation or spells.

Firecrackers set off at anytime will give him anxiety attacks and prevent him from exiting a building or shelter. If he isn’t in a building or shelter, he will lose consciousness for a range of time between 10 minutes and a hour depending on how long the fireworks last.

The Longform

Kieran Pak was the first son of William and Dorothy Pak, born in Toronto. William and Dorothy were first-generation immigrants from Hong Kong, seeking higher education and intending to leave Hong Kong before the turnover to China affects their lives. They met each other while studying and began dating, then married after they had settled down. Shortly after Kieran was born, they moved to a more suburban part of Vancouver looking for better weather and a better setting for their family to be raised.

His childhood was largely happy, in a mid-income family, spending summers with his grandparents in Hong Kong or his family in the Alberta mountains. When he was three his family had another child, Katrina, and Kieran loved her to bits. Kieran was a nice boy, seemingly with endless energy, always running around the neighbourhood, climbing trees and sailing paper boats in a nearby stream. He didn't particularly care for books or TV, unlike his little sister, preferring to be out and active. His parents noted that he had never been very good at concentrating on things like worksheets or arts and crafts, but they chalked it down to his young age.

It only became a problem when he started school. His teachers reported that he was disorganised, more so than an average boy of his age, constantly forgetting to bring anything to school. He lost all his pencils and his jacket and even his shoes. He was enrolled in sports in hopes of draining his energy, but it was not very successful. He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6, and medicated.

From that point on, his performance in school was improved. While he was never exceptional, he did do reasonably well and had a few friends. He still spent a lot of his time outdoors, but also developed an interest in reading books. He was particularly interested in history and mythology, from Greek to Egyptian, and his grandma in Hong Kong fed his interest by telling him the stories of the Cantonese folk heros and gods, ghosts and demons and everything in between. This continued until his high school years, doing averagely well in school, participating in sailing and swimming, reading books about mythology and hanging out with his friends. He was not popular in high school but not a loser, and he got by well enough, a middle of the way kid with a middle of the way family.

His grandmother passed away in Kieran's third year in high school. Kieran, in his own way of thanking her, threw himself into his studies with a newfound vigour and graduated with impressively high grades, deciding to study Archaeology in University. On his Christmas break in his freshman year, he returns to Hong Kong and decides to go on a hiking excursion while his sister and his parents went out shopping. During the hiking excursion, he stumbled upon one of the many ghost villages in the Sai Kung countryside, abandoned in favour for the more developed city.

Within the village, he found a shrine, dilapidated and crumbling but still recognisable. On the altar were two crumbling black and white statues of gods, barely recognisable as gods. Before them were two stones in matching colours, small and smooth, seemingly in perfect condition. Kieran, interested, took two of them.

The two spirits entered his body at this point, and he fell unconscious for several minutes. When he awakened, he immediately noticed that there were two voices arguing in his head, and neither were his thinking voice. Believing that he was possessed, he admitted himself to a psychiatric facility once he returned to Vancouver. Initially he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but as time went on he realised that the two voices in his head represented two of the folk gods that his grandma used to speak highly of.

He returned to complete the spring term in his university, all the while trying to figure out his abilities and making compromises with the two gods in his head. Eventually, a scout residing in Vancouver found him and recommended Manta Carlos. Kieran decided that it was the best way to go.
