The masquerade was something Destra had always been curious about. He'd vaguely heard about it during the months leading up to it. Straga even took him to get a suit fitted for the occasion. Nothing overlly fancy, but it was a nice suit. He'd fashioned himself a mask out of the hardened scales he'd shed since none of the masks he'd see were quite up to his standards. All and all he looked pretty good.

He'd opted to ask his regalis, Helena if she'd go with him. He was definitely most comfortable with her. Destra was more surprised that she actually accepted. There must have been a lot of guys that asked before him. Well he was here now, ready to pick her up and take her to the dance. He growled quietly to himself and knocked on the door.

Helena's family was rich, and thus she had attended multiple social gatherings like masquerades, balls, tea parties and such during her life. Sometimes she was bored to death in them, or more like most of the time, but Helena knew this was going to be different. This ball had her friends attending, and she was going with Destra. That was the part Helena was most excited about, since she had gone and gotten a crush for that guy. It was strange, considering Destra was kind of a grump, but he had a surprising aide that was quite appealing.
Though Helena was still annoyed he collected regalia like pokemon, but she felt the same about other contestants doing that.

Helena had chosen a cherry blossom themed outfit, her dress and mask were both soft pink and flower themed. The dress was her own, though she had added some of her magic to it so it looked a bit better. But, as always, Helena hadn'f used her powers on herself, she had just normal makeup on her face that included silver eyeshadow and lipstick the same colour as her outfit. Helena was proud of how her hair had turned out, it was curled and rested on her shoulders.

Helena put the mask on her face, and she was all done. Helena was good at doing beauty with speed and style, so she was waiting by the door when Destra came to pick her up. She could hear him growl to himself before knocking on the door, which made Helena snort a bit. She was still grinning a bit when she opened the door to him.
"You okay there, or should I call the animal rescue about an aggressive dragon?"
Helena knew that when Destra growled it had many meanings aside from anger, but she enjoyed teasing him and even now she chuckled a bit as she stepped outside.

"I'm not mad, just..." he shifted awkwardly. He didn't want to admit it, but he wanted to just get it off his chest. He trusted Helena enough to be understanding even if she gave him a little shit for it. He swallowed, "I'm just nervous because... I just am."

That was a weak response. He was internally cringing at the sentence. That wasn't a reason and he knew it. He swallowed, knowing he'd have to just fess up. Hoping that maybe this reckless move he was about to make would pay off. He needed to just get this off of his chest before they even stepped into the ballroom.

"Alright I'm just going to say it now because it's making me crazy. Not to mention it should be painfully obvious. I..." he took a breath. "Helena, I've been crushing on you for a while now. I'm not good at this romantic crap so... you want to be my girlriend?"

Destra was usually relatively chill and didn't show much emotion. But now it was clear to see that the guy was nervous. Helena tried not to be annoyed that he hadn't said anything about her dress and mask, she wasn't about to become "that girl", and Destra obviously had something else in his mind. And he did admit that he was nervous, which surprised Helena a bit. She smiled playfully and crossed her arms loosely.
"You just are? That makes sense."
It really didn't, and Helena had her theories about why Destra was nervous.

But Helena didn't get the chance to poke Destra before he basically poked himself into telling Helena that he was crushing on her, and asking her to be his girlfriend. Helena was yet again taken by surprise. Sure she had had her suspiciouns, or more like hopes, but she sure as hell hadn't expected Destra to just lay it out like this. Or maybe she should've, but it was the timing that most surprised her. Helena couldn't help but let out a small surprised, bit hysteric giggle.
"Oh, sorry, I'm not laughing at you, just...I'm just imagining how awkward it would be if I rejected you now. You couldn't save it after the ball?"
Helena laughed a little more, more freely, before getting serious.
"But I'm not rejecting you, and in all honesty I like you too, but I need to ask. Why?"
This was kind of part of the protocol. Helena had been asked out before, and though she knew that Destra was nothing like those guys that wanted to use her powers, status or money, he was aware of both. Helena just wanted to be sure, even if Destra would be insulted by it.

Destra more or less expected this as the initial response. He knew how she was, and he wasn't really put off by it. He liked her relaxed approach to things. It was pretty reassuring for sure. He wasn't expecting to be asked why, but he had a response.

"Well, you're not what most people would expect. You've got a lot of pride, and you're kind. It's a different kind of strength. You've also got a sharp wit. And you um you kinda helped me out of a rough spot. I don't mean your powers or anything like that. I know you think I see you and the other regalia as things to collect for power but I don't. You guys are my friends, if you were means to an end I wouldn't even be here with you like this. I can be more open with you than other people."

For once Destra smiled genuinely and moved a little closer. "You're pretty great. Also, you look damn good in that dress."

The first two sentences Helena had expected, she was aware of her good sides and what other people usually found attractive in her. She was just as aware of her bad sides, and she couldn't be called smug. And even though she had been expecting it it was still nice to hear you were appreciated and Helena had just the slightest blush on her cheeks as she listened.

But the answer started differing from Helena's expectations halfway through. Helena hadn't exactly been secretive about what she thought about the way people collected regalia, but it was sweet of Destra to awknowledge that and assure Helena of the opposite. She smiled and raised her hand to brush some hair behind her ear, it was one of her flustered habits.

If that thorough answer hadn't been good enough Destra just had to go and seal the deal by flashing that smile and complimenting Helena's dress. This guy really was a natural. Helena chuckled and answered the smile.
"That was a pretty damn good answer. A+."
Helena stepped close to Destra and thanks to her heels she didn't even need to reach too much to give Destra a kiss on the cheek. They gave her almost two inches more height.
"I hope you're gonna show your newly gained girlfriend good time then."

"That is the general plan for tonight. I've never been to one of these things before, but they're supposed to be fun right?" Destra grinned and returned the kiss then took her hand. Things were shaping up to work out pretty well for tonight. He couldn't wait to see what the night had in store for the two of them.

"Lets put these other couples to shame out there."

"It's as fun as you make it. I've been to a masquerade where someone had to get punched and fall into the punch bowl for it to become interesting."
Helena said and laughed a bit at the memory. That evening had become a lot more interesting after the punch punch incident.
"Let's just hope it isn't boring enough to come to that."

Helena intertwined her fingers with Destra's as he took her hand, the kiss he gave her felt very nice and made Helena's cheeks blush just a bit. She could get used to this. And when Destra declared a war to the other couples Helena burst out laughing and grinned at Destra.
"Hell yeah. They won't know what hit them."

Destra grinned when she laughed at his stupid declaration. Unlike her, he wouldn't mind seeing a brawl break out during the ball. As long as it didn't involve him. He was at least smart enough to de-escalate any raised tensions should they arise. Holding hands with Helena was nice though, he'd even call it a perfect fit. He had a a gentle yet strong grip, he wouldn't let her go.

"Oh they'll know our names when they sing our songs," he grinned. That confident, almost cocky grin he had whenever he'd taken on challenges of any kind. It was an expression Helena would know all too well. He was genuinely having fun even though the night was young.

He made small talk with her on their way into the ballroom. When they were inside he looked around, genuinely impressed by what he saw.

"I guess it's finally time to see how well I do with this ballroom dancing. I've been taking lessons..."

Helena raised an amused eyebrow at Destra and that grin of his, if she hadn't known him better Helena could've sworn Destra was going to the ball looking for a fight with the other couples.
"Those songs better mention my beauty at least twice or I'm sueing the bard. He will never sing in another tavern again."
Helena joked back and laughed a bit. Although if song was to be made about her she wanted it to have a bass drop and a beautifully sung chorus.

On the way to the ballroom Helena was already feeling great, she couldn't really have hoped for a better start for this evening. She swung her and Destra's joined hands a bit, Helena had a firm and strong grip for someone who looked so delicate and small.

Helena looked around the ball as they arrived, she was admiring the aesthetic but she had been to so many events like this she didn't have the energy to be impressed at it. Though Helena enjoyed seeing Destra look around impressed, she still remembered her first ball and though Destra probably wasn't feeling as amazed as she had back then it was still probably an experience.

"You've been what?"
Helena looked at Destra surprised, she had a small happy smile on her face that soon grew into a small grin and Helena leaned forward bit to look at Destra's face properly.
"You took dance lessons just for this? Mr. Gruff dragon? That's really sweet. Although I bet it was annoying. At least it was for me when I first learned to dance."
