March was shaping up to be a fairly rough month at Jack's Butcher Shop to say the very least. It was barely even a week in when some asshole decided it would be a good idea to spike the punch at a disease awareness event with a magical virus. A lot of people were getting sick, and Jack's employees were no exception. For the most part, the staff was an eclectic mix of various man eating and carnivorous creatures, most of whom haven't been sick a day in their lives. If Alain had to ballpark he'd say it was about a third who gradually started showing symptoms and were unable to come in. Of this portion, Bradley Davis, his boss was among them. The general policy at Jack's barred any employee from working if they were sick, as one would expect from an establishment such as theirs. Regardless of any of this, on a brighter note all soup was on sale at the shop.

Alain had just finished updating the choice cuts for the week, and restocked the soup display. He caught himself yawning as he worked, he hadn't taken a day off since the sickness hit. He didn't mind the pay he was getting, but four of the last seven days turned into twelve hour shifts. He had hit day eight and coworkers that were left were starting to defer to him like he was in charge. Probably because he was saner than many of the people that worked there, he was also holding it together at least on the outside. Maybe he developed an immunity because someone needed to help the rest of the damn island, who knew.

On the brighter side they did manage to hire a new delivery girl. As far as Alain knew she wasn't a man eater like many people in the shop, she was however another werewolf similar to himself. She was just a ray of sunshine to say the very least, always happy to help out. The fact that they were similar gave him some solidarity. In some ways Jack's employees were almost a makeshift pack in and of itself. He hadn't really hung out with another werewolf his age since his parents shipped him to Manta Carlos to attend school. He flopped down in a chair behind the front counter when he noticed her.

"Hey have you taken your break yet? It's really slow right now," he smiled. "Actually it's dead and it's scaring me."

Adelyn ears perked up as Alain asked her if she had taken a break yet. She was carrying a large box that had just been delivered.

“Oh, no, not yet! Let me just put this in the back…”

Adelyn quickly shuffled to the back, where she put the box aside. While she hadn’t been working Jack’s for very long, she was a quick learner and already quite familiar with the inner workings of the butcher shop. She enjoyed her new job—being a werewolf meant being surrounded by meat certainly didn’t bother her (though it did make her hungry), and everyone was really nice to her. Even Eddie was nice, and she had been warned the shrunken head was usually anything but! She was glad to be helping people—both the understaffed shop, and those out there who were sick and needed food delivered.

Storm had told her—even though she wanted to help people, she couldn’t help everyone. Adelyn knew that was true, and it was beyond her to help Stefan after what happened. But as someone who seemed to be immune to the virus, she could help others. When she saw how exhausted Alain was running the butcher shop while he boss was out sick, Adelyn jumped at the opportunity to be useful and help deliver soup.

Adelyn returned from the back and joined Alain at the front counter. Like Alain, she had not really spent much time with any werewolves her own age—not on the island, or even back in her old pack. Of course she had Storm, but it was nice to spend time with a werewolf who was closer to her age.

“Yeah, it’s really quiet now…” Adelyn said as she sat beside him. “Which probably means a rush is gonna come later. That seems to be how it usually works out!”

She tilted her head, her usual bright smile on her face.

“How are you holding up?”

Alain knew the rush was almost imminent, though at the same time with the virus, maybe not. Island life seemed to be gradually grinding to a halt as a result. No one really wanted to say anything about it but it was happening. He could mostly tell here at Jack's, some of their regulars hadn't come in at all recently. Try as he might he could only bottle up so much stress.

"Might as well enjoy the quiet while it lasts. I think they're almost done in the back for now too," he smiled slightly.

He glanced over at Adelyn as she took a seat next to him. He tried relaxing as best he could. Maybe he was taking his job a little too seriously. But what about the flesh eaters who needed certain amounts of human flesh to function normally? This wasn't exactly a community people would want hungry. How was he holding up? That was a good question, actually. It was an odd mix of energetic but that tired kind of energetic. The lack of school only added to time spent working at the shop.

"I'm doing fine so far. Tired, but good. How about you? Is Storm out of soup? I made some extra if you wanna take some home."

Adelyn beamed when Alain mentioned he made extra soup that she could bring home to Storm.

“I’m sure Storm would appreciate more soup! Poor Storm is a mess and doesn’t want to leave her cottage at all, so I want to help as best I can…”

Calling Storm ‘a mess’ was putting it lightly. Her ability to transform was completely out of control, and giving her traits of animals she wasn’t even able to transform into normally. The virus was serious, and seeing how it affected Storm just further made Adelyn want to help as many as she could.

“It’s weird not being in school, isn’t it?” she suddenly asked “I mean, I never went to a school before I came here, but now that I’m in a school, it feels weird to not be in it.”

“But I’m doing good!” she quickly added, realizing she hadn’t exactly answered Alain’s ‘how are you’. Saying the first thing in her head didn't exactly make for a clear answer.

“I still have energy, and knowing that I can help people keeps me going.”
