Naoko was, as far as she could tell, one of the only people on campus who wasn't in class. Everyone else was in power class, but since Naoko had absolutely no powers, there was nothing to be taught. She'd been offered a chance to learn magic--most of the unpowered humans took the chance--but Naoko had never been terribly interested in it. It all felt... well, unwanted. She didn't think she'd be any good at it, and the idea of having some magic inside her that just worked was sort of unsettling.

Really, she'd rather just spend her time studying for classes that were more immediately relevant.

And, you know, mandatory.

There was a big essay coming up, and Naoko had stopped into the library to pick up some books. The library was empty--blissfully, amazingly empty--and Naoko practically skipped through the shelves looking for books.

No one to talk loudly while she was trying to read. No one to check out books and leave them around. No one to complain at the librarian over something stupid.

Her free period was great.

This was… Quite the adjustment.

He didn’t think it was possible. To feel even more alien than he already was. Back at home, classmates side-eyed him, children pointed at him, and adults doubted him. This reassignment was supposed to change everything. And yet here he was, a place where classmates side-eyed him, children pointed at him, and adults doubted him.. Only the stakes were higher. He could retaliate against a human boy his age. A potential son of a god though?

Not so much.

So a fighting spirit would be qualmed, at least for now. But not just for his sake. If harm came his way, it wouldn’t just affect him- it would effect his brother, too.

This library was their safe space for the time being. All those who wielded power- 99.5% of the student body, he’d guess- were off in their powers classes, meaning they had study hall. Because spending the afternoon with dusty old books was just soooooooo much better than playing with super powers.

”This sucks serious ass.” Cyril grumbled in a tone a few decibels louder than necessary. ”I can’t believe they sent us to this dusty old library to do goddamn-”

”Cyril… Please...” His brother’s willowy voice whispered out, much more at an appropriate volume. ”People are trying to study, please keep your voice down-”

Cyril looked over his shoulder, and there he was. Face to face, with a spitting image of himself. Except that he was sort of joined to his hip and was dependent on his body to live. And he had a different haircut. ”Oh please. This place is empty. What kind of loser would-”

His loud voice was cut off when he peered around the corner. Just there was someone who actually was studying. Oops. ”Oh- uh… Shit. Did you hear all that or...”

Naoko was used to running into... well, almost no one. The school was all but empty when power classes were around. People didn't skip power classes. Why would they? They were almost always people's favorite classes, a time when they could practice their powers with impunity.

Except her. Well, except her and a few select others, people she knew by face and voice even if not by name. There wasn't really a community of the powerless so to speak, but they tended to recognize each other.

Except not the pair of voices she heard floating through the library at a decidedly unlibrary-esque volume.

Naoko frowned into her book, glaring down at it for a moment before giving up, glancing towards the voices as they rounded the stacks.

"Yes," Naoko said before her brain caught up with her eyes. Even when they did, it was only for a moment--she'd seen plenty of unusual things, and her history on the island put her in a strange place.

Simply put, she didn't realize that it was possible for someone to be like them without it being magic. She simply assumed it was something supernatural.

"Shouldn't you be in power classes?" She asked, her eyes flicking between the two similar faces.

Shit.

Well now, this was embarrassing. Because he had assumed that they were alone he went about spewing profanities in a place of sacred study. Oops. Well, he readied himself to face the consequences. Far too many times had he over stepped his mouth and its boundaries and suffered the consequences of one’s supernatural power.

Unless…

Well, there had to be a reason for the person to be skipping out of powers classes. Most likely, she either A) Mastered hers already or B) Had none to begin with. For now, Cyril would reel himself in. He considerably lowered his volume as he continued in a gruff murmur.
”Uh, sorry about that. I’m not really good with controlling my volume.” Cyril huffed, while his brother muttered something under his breath, most likely a teasing affirmation given the sharp look Cyril gave him in response. His attention however was brought back when the young woman was under the assumption that he was skipping powers classes.

”Pfft, if I had powers you honestly think I’d be playing hooky?” He asked, a bit begrudgingly. ”Nah, my brother and I are about as normie as they come, unfortunately. Yet somehow we were qualified enough to be sent here.” Of course, Cyril knew the reason why. He did enjoy messing with people to see how long they’d tap dance around the obvious, however.

”What about you? Are you too cool for school?” Cyril asked, hoisting the body jutting from his hip upwards. ”Or are you in the same boat as we are?”

It should have been easy. Naoko probably should have been able to just push past the entire conversation as it stood. But she couldn't. She was still looking at them, her brain trying to connect the dots, and her simple lack of any mundane experience was failing her. She had never lived a life off island, had never experienced life as a normal human surrounded by other normal humans. She expected the supernatural, and faced by something mundane she assumed supernatural anyway.

"Hold on," Naoko said, trying to find a way to word things in a manner that wasn't going to be insulting, and no doubt failing miserably. "You mean powerless, but nor mundane, right? Because you're fused."

And how could being fused be mundane? There had to be something to it, even if it didn't confer any extra powers.

"And I have no powers, for the record," she added almost as an afterthought. "Which is why I don't have class."

As expected, Cyril found this conversation entertaining. Despite all the magic and supernatural occurrences happening everyday, this young woman seemed fixated on the twins. In a sense, Cyril felt humbled. Perhaps in a certain way, they belonged here. If only by the assumptions of what they are.

”Uh, yeah.” He clarified, chuckling a bit. He looked at his brother, who leaned on his shoulder to gain stability after standing still for so long. ”We were fused. In utero. All we are are conjoined twins. Maybe the way we’re joined versus how long we’ve lived is what makes us ‘gifted’, or whatever buzzword they tell people here. From our hips up, we’re two separate people. But everything that’s down… Well, that’s shared. Except the legs. Those are mine.”

He kicked one leg out as demonstration, while his brother looked at him with an embarrassed glance that read ‘TMI’.

Cyril shrugged it off. ”Anyway, that’s all there is to us. Somehow that was enough to get us shipped off to here.” He then looked her over, an eyebrow raising. Was there something that he was missing? Why would someone as… Normal as her be shipped off to the island?

”...Huh, you really are a normie. No offense, but why are you here then? On this island? Letter sent to the wrong address or something?” He was being awfully talkative today, perhaps due to being in the presence of someone who couldn’t light him on fire if he said the wrong thing. Lyric, however, was being awfully silent. Good thing Cyril did enough talking for the both of them.

Naoko really wasn't sure what to make of the boy. Boys, really. There were two of them, but despite so many group minds on Manta Carlos, the figure in front of her was more or less the opposite. They were a single body with two minds... and literally two heads, but they were still one figure... weren't they?

It was all very confusing, and it wasn't something she'd heard of... until a tiny tickle in her brain clued her in.

"Hold on," Naoko said abruptly. "Are you saying that you're like Flora and Fauna from the Addam's family?"

From the perspective of someone born and raised on the island, the Addam's family seemed funny but also sort of mundane, and it had never occurred to her that conjoined twins were any different from the sentient detached hand that ran around the house.

"And for your information, I was born here," Naoko added with a small huff, unable to decide if she liked the one that kept talking. Maybe the other one was nicer? Evil twin, mean twin and all that?
