Amber checked her phone the instant her class was over. She had felt the vibration go off twice on her side pocket of her shirt which she had a habit of keeping her phone in. Thankfully she was good about keeping her phone on vibrate, unlike other more lazy students whom often got their phone taken away during class period. As the phone lit up, Amber read and reread the text sent from her mother over and over again.

Amber felt nervous... no... she felt sick. While her mom didn't say it... she knew what this about being sent to the principle's office earlier for... her misuse of powers. She... she didn't mean to! She couldn't help herself! She tried to be discrete about that fact that she was occasionally draining her classmates without their knowledge but... in retrospect she knew that eventually that someone would catch on. But... now that its thats it happened... it was only now that she felt like an idoit for thinking that she could have hide this from everyone. She wasn't even sure why she did it all in the first place? And now... now the moment she was dreading as about to transpire.

Amber didn't know how her mom was going to react... was she going to be upset with her? Mad? Disappointed? Her mom Chloe prided herself with how good she was and now that her beloved daughter was sent to the principles office it would completely shatter her reputation?! Amber is a good student! A good girl! She felt terrified of the thought of shaming her mom and... contemplated if she should... just go home with her sisters back to her other mom Pandora... or just... staying in this classroom for the rest of her life.

In the end... Amber, as instructed, proceeded to meet her mother just outside the school building. She... she was going to have to face her sooner or later. Not showing up would just make her mom Chloe panic and make the whole thing worse than it already is. Once she spotted her mom, she adjusted her backpack slightly and walked up next to her.

"Hi mom! I'm... I'm here!" she chirped, happy to being seeing her mother but... there was hint of unease in Amber.

Amber then shrinks away from her mom, avoiding eye contact and fidgeting her fingers. A swirl of emotions flowing and swirling in her mind.

"I... I..." Amber wanted to speak but found herself choking up. She waits for mom to verbally barrage her with how awful of a daughter she was. This has to be the worst day of her life.

When Chloe saw the kids filing out of the school building, she put her book away and stood up, watching for spider bodies in the stream of young students. She found Amber's shape fairly quickly.

She was scared. Chloe was scared, too, but she was harder to read. Her face was like a statue. Her hand went to Amber's shoulder. "I'm not mad at you. If I was, that'd make me a hypocrite."

Now, she was holding her hand out for Amber to grab onto. "Let's go for a walk, Amber." Mother and daughter, students both, they walked away from the river of young humanity. "Have you heard that word before, Amber? 'Hypocrite?'"

Chloe often forgot how young her daughter was. Only a handful of months old, and already a voracious reader with a rapidly growing vocabulary. Eat your heart out, every other member of the PTO.

Amber closed her eyes, her body tensed up in preparation for her mother to chastise her for her actions. Instead, she was greeted with a comforting hand resting on her shoulder. One of Amber's eye's peeked open, relieved but confused as why mother wasn't lecturing her. Though... to be fair, Amber didn't entirely know what sort of reaction she expected from her mother as she as she has never gotten into this much trouble over something. Still, the way her mom always seemed calm and stoic throughout something so serious was almost enviable. Behind that calm demeanor though... it was difficult to tell whatever her mother might truly be feeling behind that face. At least her mom wasn't angry at her.

"Y-your not mad?" asked Amber, still somewhat in disbelief that her mother wasn't angry with her. When prompted to go out on a walk with her mother, Amber did not protest and walked hand and hand with her mother. She held onto her mother's hand tightly for comfort. Amber couldn't help but look up to her mother with a curious expression on her face the entire time they were walking, only half paying attending to as her mother's grasp guided her along the path.

"Oh... yeah. I know that word. It means... when you pretend to be something that your not right? Or... something like that at least..."

"Close." Chloe's thumb rubbed against the slick back of her daughter's chitinous hand. Her gaze shifted between her daughter and the path ahead. "A hypocrite is someone who... Ah, who gets mad at people for something that they're doing themselves. We have the same power, and I've been doing things about as bad as what you did with it. Probably worse. But that doesn't mean that what you did is ok. It's just..." Chloe sighed. "I understand why you did it. I crave it too."

This was hard to talk about. Chloe hadn't even spoken to her therapist about that detail of her powers. The cravings. The fear that she was eating away at souls. She didn't even want to ask her father about it - she didn't want to know the truth. She would have to keep feeding anyway, or she would die.

And now Amber it too. The power and the cravings. Chloe couldn't afford willful ignorance anymore. She had beem agonizing about this day for months, trying to put it off. This uncomfortable status quo was all she knew.

"We both need to do better. And, and what you did today is my fault. I should have talked to you about this stuff sooner. You were just doing the same things I did." They would walk a little bit farther. "How long can you go, usually? Before you need it again?" Her throat hurt, as though the words that she uttered needed to be dragged out forcibly, clawing at her insides, trying desperately to stop Amber from hearing them.

Chloe hated this. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had ruined her daughter's life before they had even met.

Amber would listen attentively to her mother. Chloe seemed to understand her power... her cravings far better herself. She would blink every now and then as mom continued to listen. Her mother opening up helped Amber feel a little less guilty of herself and felt comforted that her she and her mom where going to work on this issue together. They may not have looked a mother daughter pair (so much they that the both of them initially doubted any kinship between the two of them) but at least their shared power and cravings was something the two of them can relate with each other.

"Oh... umm... ever since the started... having them... I can usually go... 4... 5 days before it gets too bad. But... sometimes... I when I think I get away with it I try to drain energy from people when they don't realize what I'm doing." replied Amber, a little uncomfortable with having to tell her mother... it was something that always felt so private. Amber would then look to her mom with a concerned expression on her face.

"Is there... anything that I should be worried about? I... try to be quick about because I won't want draw too much attention and... I only need a little of energy to feel better but... part of me worries about going overboard. I mean... what would happen if I could drain... all of them? Does it... work like that?"

Chloe nodded along as Amber described her behavior. Understanding. That was how Chloe started too, barely sustaining herself, not bothering others too much.
It wasn't ever enough.

"I... don't think you can drain... everything, from someone," Chloe said. "At least, it would take a long time. I've done it for over an hour to someone, about once a week."

Two different someones at two different times. First, her old boyfriend from before she came to Manta Carlos. Then, Lochlann. Chloe had the vague feeling that they became less, over time, as she took more from them, but she couldn't explain what exactly was 'less' about them.

"There might be something to worry about, though." Deep breath. "Amber, I need to find something out about our powers. I..." She didn't want to say what was worrying her. It was too hard to admit. "I'm going to take you to one of the dark arts labs. There'll be a couple of needles, but I'm only going to be using them on myself. All you have to do is drain me for a little bit, once we get there."

Amber appeared momentary relieved, it was one less thing to be concerned about. Still... if she wasn't going to risk extended draining sessions even if it was safe to do so for an hour. Her reprieve however was short-lived as her mother brought up a concern that she was rather vague about... and it was this vagueness that most alarmed Amber. She could only herself starring wide eye at her mom.

Her mother knew how their power's worked right? Then why... why would they need to go in for some testing? Did... did her mom not really know if there was some sort of horrible side effects of their draining? What if she and her mom was accidentally hurting people because they didn't know any better!? This was bad... THIS WAS REALLY BAD!

"W-what!? Testing? Ne-ne-NEEDLES!? Why!? What do you mean there is something to worry about? You... you know how your powers work... right? You know know how my powers work RIGHT?! We aren't hurting anyone right... RIGHT!?" blurted out Amber, her voice trembling as panic started to set in.

Amber never thought that she was actually particularly bad to anyone whenever she siphoned their energy... at least until now. She always thought of her training as sucking just a little energy like charging her phone. But now... now she was worried that she was causing some sort of irreversible damage to the people she drained!? She has drained several of her classmates, a few strange and even some of her sister's while they sleep!

Amber body quivers as she bites hard on her lower lip, she looks down to her hands and stares at them while her imagination makes them look more menacing in her mind. Amber feels herself on the verge of a panic attack, panting for oxygen as she continues to stare at her ugly mysterious hands in mixture of gross fascination and outright horror. She didn’t know if her powers where actually hurting anyone but her mind was quick to jump to the worst possible outcomes.

Amber was panicking. She was probably right to panic, too. Chloe should probably have been panicking. She had let this go on for so long without knowing what kind of damage it could do. All the children around Amber could have been exposed to Amber's power. It was starting to make Chloe panic, herself. But she needed to stay calm. Amber needed to stay calm, too. Chloe stopped and knelt down next to Amber. She knew she had some explaining to do.

"I... I know this is a lot, Amber. I'm sorry."

She held Amber's hands in her own.

"As far as I know, our power doesn't hurt anyone very much. But, there's a chance, a..." she wanted to downplay it for Amber. "A small chance, that our power does something very small to... I mean, something small and usually pretty easy to fix, just by resting, and you probably haven't even done anything permanent to anyone, but... it might do something to people's souls. And - and even if it does, and it might not, but even if it does everything will be okay, ok?"

Chloe was terrified. She needed to be strong for Amber, and she was trying, but there was terror in her voice.

Amber looks back up to her mom, her hands weakly grabbing onto the looser articles of clothing her mom was wearing at the moment as she looks back to her with big pleading yellow eyes on the cusp of tears.

"*sniffles*P-pa-palease tell I didn't hurt my sisters? Pha-pha-plaeaws tell me I did not... I dida... I d-din-ount huraa.. hurrrta any-wan... wan... wann... wahhaann nhaaa huuhnnn naaa... whaaa... wahaa... WHHHANNAaaaa nuhhh haaaa! I-I don't wawnaa hurt nobodieeeeee whaaannn... *sniff*... *sniff*" bawled Amber as she buries her face into her mother's thigh to try to muffle out her own crying. She was scared... terrified of the thought, no matter how slim her mother assured her it was, that she was hurting the people closest to her and it was all her fault. Amber would spend several moments crying, hugging onto her mom's leg as if for dear life as she tries to smother away tears on her mom's clothing until the tears just won't roll down her face any longer.

"M-mom... I... I'm scared... I'm... I'm really scared..." whispered Amber as she hugged tightly to her mom's leg for comfort. Most of her tears where spend at this point but Amber could still feel the salty stains they left behind on her cheeks as well as dribble of snot coming down her nose from crying so hard. She tried discretely wipe away the mucus with her left arm to feel a little less... gross.

As she saw Amber cry, she wanted to cry too. She was scared, too. She couldn't tell Amber any of the things Amber wanted her to say, so she stood. She ran fingers through Amber's hair. She tried to be comforting.

Ruined her life before she even knew her.

When Amber had finished her bout of crying, Chloe tried to move them both forward. "We'll figure this out Amber. It'll be okay. No matter what happens, we'll figure something out."

Eventually, they made it to a building where college students had classes. Some of them were still having classes, or were leaving classes that finished, or were going to classes that were about to start. Chloe lead Amber inside. Many of the students found it strange that there was a girl in an elementary uniform coming to a building for college classes, but they didn't say anything. Many of them also knew this was Chloe and her daughter, but seeing the fresh tears on Amber's eyes, they didn't say anything.

Once they ascended to the third floor, there were not as many people to watch them or wonder. Chloe used her student ID to bring them both through a dark, locked door. There was a small table with some chairs, where one might be able to do homework, and that was the most normal thing about the room. There were many strange objects and tools and machines, and jagged, unnatural looking metal objects which glowed or moved on their own.

"Stay here for a second while I find the stuff I need." she set her hand down on that table. "This shouldn't take too long."
