Amber digested everything her mom was saying... trying to put the pieces together. She never knew of her mother's previous boyfriend until now and part of her was wondering if she was making up this whole story to try calm. The only thing she really got out of the whole thing was that her mom's ex was a jerk and that her draining power might be slowly turning people into jerks just like him. As her mother looked down to her, Amber couldn't help but look down and bit her lower lip as... she was still trying to think of something to say.

Though her mom tried to downplay their worst fears... Amber was still worried. Afterall... her mom only waited until now to finally confront this. They where both afraid Amber would look back to her mother, twiddling her fingers.

"M-maybe... maybe we should wait for the results and find out sure... I... don't want to be eating people's souls and turn them into jerks like your boyfriend..." suddenly a thought came into her and without thinking she blurted it out loud "... is that why you like mom?"

OH GOSH WHY DID SHE JUST SAY THAT! It was an innocent question but she probably shouldn't be asking her mom about such personal matters.

Chloe laughed. The question caught her off guard. "Are you asking if my ex boyfriend turned me gay? ...I'm sorry." She felt like she could come off as ridiculing her daughter, and that's the last thing she wanted to do. She was still smiling, though. "That's not a dumb question. It's just, I never thought of it that way. I actually fell in love with Pandora because... she can be exciting and fun to be around. And she made me feel special."

That was the simplified G-rated version, anyway.

"What did you mean, though?" It also could have been a question about draining, and not about her ex being a jerk.

Amber smiled, happy that her took her question rather well. It was nice and comforting to listen to mom reaffirm her love of her other mother. It was funny that she would think to ask such a question out of the blue will what was currently going on but she was glad that she asked... even if she didn't mean to blurt it out the way she did.

"Awww... thats sweet. And cute! Oh and yes... that was what a ment. Ummm... if we have time... do think you can tell me how it was the two of you got together?" piped up Amber as she wipes off the salt left behind from her tears from before.

Now she wanted to know more about how her parents got together in the first place! Like... what it was that her mom did to swoon over her other mother! These where questions that she always had in the back of her mind and while they waited... maybe her mother will indudge her answers. Plus... she really wanted to move her mind away the thoughts about how she may have been ruining the lives of others by stealing part of their souls.

"Cause... ummm... you know... while we are the subject?" she added.

Chloe began to notice the streaks on her daughter's face where her tears had been running. There was a sink near where she was sitting. She stood up to grab a paper towel and wet it, then she moved her chair closer to Amber to sit down again. "Here, let me wipe some of that away."

She would tell her story while she tried to wipe the evidence of crying off of Amber's face. Hopefully, there wouldn't be more crying. Chloe almost hated herself for inflicting this guilt on Amber - but she felt it needed to be done. For everyone else's sake. "I met your mother at a Halloween party. I was going as a kind of alien in a space suit. It took me several months to get the costume right." Chloe then realized that she needed to explain Halloween to her daughter, since she had never experienced it before. "Halloween is great, by the way. It's a holiday that happens every year on October, which was over a month before I met you. Most people dress up in costumes for it. And you get to walk around neighborhoods and get candy from people, and people will try to spook each other a lot. It's silly, but it's great. Anyway, I met your mom at a costume party. Your aunt Malara was there, too, and she introduced us. And then, ah-"

As Chloe thought about it, she decided that most of the details of what came after that were not safe for young ears. The fact that Chloe was drunk, for one - this was before Chloe had cut down on her binge drinking. And then there was Pandora's behavior - how it repelled that other insectoid girl, and how it tantalized Chloe herself. It was all very un-wholesome. She felt like she needed to protect her daughter from the story of how she met her mother. This realization made her a little sad.

She seemed to be lost in thought as she finished wiping away the last evidence of tears. "Well, I guess, we were really good friends from then on."

As her mother wiped the last remnants of her tears, listening to her mom's story of meeting her other mom... she couldn't help but let out a snort. It was nowhere the romantic meeting on a park bench park that she always imagine with Chloe reading a book and Pandora climbing down down the tree behind nervously coming down with a rose in hand. The fact that her two mom's met at a costume party was just about the dorkiest thing she could imagine. It was okey though, she liked this version better.

"R-really" laughed Amber, hardly able to hold back her grin "T-thats how two met? T-t-thats the silliest thing I think I heard~"

After her mom wiped off her face, she would nuzzle her head on her mother. She felt a little better now. Funny how a bit laughter seems to make ones worries subside for a moment.

"Its okey though... I'm glad you are both GOOD friends. Where would I be without the two of you?~" piped up Amber.

Chloe ran her fingers through Amber's hair. "You probably wouldn't be anywhere. But I'm glad you're here."

The box Chloe was using for her experiment made a beeping sound. She took a deep breath, then let it out. "Well, here comes the moment of truth." After giving her daughter a short, tight hug, she stood up and looked at a panel on the box. She pressed a few buttons, and the panel showed some numbers and bar graphs. She leaned in and looked closely at them.

"Alright." She nodded. Her gaze fell to another set of numbers. She mumbled something. Another set of numbers, another bit of mumbling. Eventually, she stood up straight. "No difference," she said. "You didn't do anything to my soul. So... I don't think we're hurting people." She threw the capillary tubes with her blood into a hazardous waste container, then went about cleaning off her dagger and cleaning up after herself. "I'm sorry I made you worry so much. We are going have a talk about asking permission before using your powers on them, but... I think this was enough punishment. Do you want to get a treat on the way home?"

She was probably spoiling her daughter, but Chloe felt like she needed a little pick-me-up herself after all this.

Amber forgot how to breath for a moment when her mother told her the good news. All of the worries she had melted away as her mom concluded that their powers did not appear to be stealing parts of peoples souls as they feared.

"Y-you mean... r-really?! So... no one was..." smiled widely for this is the happiest she has felt all day... aside from when she was draining her mom ealier for longer than she is used to but that is beside the point "so everyone is okey! Oh thank goodnesss everyone is okey! I-I was so worried I was causing so much harm that I... I... I'm just soo happy right now..."

Amber took several deep breaths, then nodded in agreement with her mom.

"Ye-yeah... sure thing mom... I... I should apologize to some of my-" Amber paused... the word victims just didn't settle well with her... as if implying an intentional malice... like she was predator. "- to... the people I thought I was hurting..." stated Amber with grimance... it was going to be hard but... she felt that she had to do it. Sure no one was left with any lasting harm but she didn't mean what she did was okey. She and her mom will talk more about that when they get home later. For now... there was only one thing on her mind right now.

"I-ice cream! I want ice cream... the one flavored with strawberries please." spoke up Amber, an odd request but strawberry ice cream sounded really delectable right about now.

Only when they got to the car did Chloe lose her composure.

It started with a hug. It tightened. She began to sob.

"I'm crying because I'm happy."

Amber had only gotten a glimpse of the anxiety and the self-loathing her mother had battled for years. And that was all she would ever have to experience: just a glimpse. Now it was over. It was behind them. It was a silly thing they could laugh about later.

She couldn't turn her relief into words. It fell from her eyes in drips and streaks, staining Amber's uniform.

Amber had just transitioned into her more humanoid form to make it easier for her to seat herself in the car when her mother suddenly hugged her and started sobbing on her... she could feel the wetness of her mother's tears soaking patches of her uniform. Amber had always saw her mother mother composed, calm, and stoic. To see her break down like this left her paralyzed, frozen like like concrete statue. Amber, now having to be the one to comfort her mom, shimmed her arms and awkwardly hugged her mother as she cried onto her uniform.

Seeing her mom expressing such emotion scared her almost... her mom was her pillar of stability and to see her be so vulnerable made her realized that her mom has always been putting up a strong front for her. But... they were tears of joy that her mom was heading... it was only know that Amber could truly admire the burden her mom carried for all of these years. Just as her mom had been there for her she now had to be there for her mom.

"U-umm... m-m-mom... I..." Amber struggled for words so she just settled with holding her mom, letting her actions speak for her. She closed all of her eyes and held her mom for as long as her mom needed her to hold her. Amber wanted to comfort her... that she was here for her for her for overcoming a fear that she had always harbored... a fear that is all but extinguished. Amber would hold her mom... the short span of time they held each other feeling like an eternity.

"I'm happy for you too mom..." whispered Amber she gently rests her head on her mom.
