Shay picked at a loose string of clothing as she listened. When Angelo said he wouldn't make a good father, she gave him an incredulous look. "Trust me, fluffy, the day you decide you want a kid, you'd be an amazing father. But you're not my father, or any of our fathers. To tell you the truth, I don't want another dad or mom.

"But... I... well family doesn't have to be labeled. You can be family without taking on any preconceived roles. Maybe we just are. Maybe we were just always meant to be. When we met by chance, I thought – Well, no. I felt like I knew you then. Like 'yeah, this isn't the last time.'"

She breathed out, clearly relaxed now. "You are fair. I'm not, but you are. You're a good man. I was so angry with you after I came back. I was so angry because it felt like you were trying to trick or force me into telling you what happened. And I sat there thinking 'isn't he a good man? Was I wrong? Or is this what it is to be good?'"

Tired from the intensity of it all, Shay reached out and gave his torso/chest region a slight pat. "If I had actually been your daughter, everything would have been different. I think. But maybe it wouldn't have been. I think I was always destined to be this. Whatever fucked up thing I am."

Silence then and Shay leaned forward until her forehead could rest against him gingerly, as though she feared he might push her away or fall away from the touch.

"You always mention the don, but you don't really talk about your adoptive parents. Were they good?"

It had never really occurred to Angelo how little Shay knew about him. She knew he was mafia, yes, but what about his childhood? What had he told her? It had been a long time since he'd first met Shay, and he could hardly remember having told her anything about herself. The fact that she was talking about adoptive parents...

"I didn't have any," Angelo said. "I was raised by my mother and my... uh, I thought he was my biological father at the time but looking back it's pretty obvious he wasn't, and that there was some kinda reaper involved. But I'm going to call him my father because that was basically what he was. When Enzo was born, my parents basically handed me over to the don to be his best friend slash playmate slash bodyguard, because it was a lot easier to have a kid a bit older then him following him around then to have an adult with him. At that point I still saw my parents a bit, but lived with Enzo, the don, and his family. When my powers came out when I was a bit older, I bascially stopped seeing my parents at all. Any time I saw my dad it was like, across a hallway. When I left for Manta Carlos I hadn't talked to either of my parents in a few years. So really, the don was more like my dad then anyone else."

Shay quietly listened to Angelo until he was finished speaking. "Oh... I guess I just assumed because both of your parents were human and.... Oh." She was contemplative. "Didn't you miss them, though? Didn't they miss you? I couldn't understand just letting something like that go."

She scrubbed at her face, seeming worn. Her emotional chatting compacity was at an end for the day. Shay didn't like that fragile security building up, but there was nothing she could do about it. There was no reasoning with emotions.

"Uh... thank you."

A pause – too long a pause.

"For, y'know, putting up with me. I think I need to sleep, though. It's been one crazy day."

Angelo simply shrugged. It was obvious to him how tired Shay was, and they'd dealt with a lot. Nothing good could come from bringing it up. Nothing good could come from saying no, he hadn't missed them, and no, they didn't miss me. He barely thought of them. He thought of the Don a fair amount, but his own flesh and blood (or what he'd thought was flesh and blood) parents?

No, he didn't miss them at all.

"You don't have to thank me for putting up with you," Angelo said with a snort. "And you do need some sleep." Angelo paused for a moment before straightening up.

"I'll head out for the night - try not to be a stranger, alright?"

And with that, Angelo would go, off to find the other kids and make sure everyone had gotten home safe.
