Chloe kept grimacing.

Of course, Evan couldn't give her anything more like closure, couldn't even help her narrow the possibilities down that much. It wasn't like he knew any of them, or that he could go back and check or anything.

"This sucks," She decided. "One of the worst things about living here. I still don't know if I should be grieving or — making long term plans to try to visit them. If that's even possible." Her father had assured her that it was, but it would be time consuming and resource-intensive, finding the exact right universe. And this was by his standards, the God-like demon noble. What could she do? Would it even be worth the attempt?

She knew her mom would love Amber. Once they got past the part where Chloe knocked up a giant spider, of course, which would probably take time - but Chloe had thought of that. She would just have Amber wear a glamour, and at first, she would just be a wonderful little girl who likes books. Her age would need explaining too, of course. She had spent a lot of time imagining this meeting, despite how unlikely it seemed.

"Do you have any family back home? Or anyone you care about?" Just about everyone did, she was sure. This was going to suck for Evan too.

There was the difference, wasn't it? Chloe wasn't sure. Chloe might want to go back.

Evan didn't. Evan knew what kind of world it was and vastly preferred Manta Carlos.

"No," he said, as blunt as possible. "My parents were dead. My whole family got killed, and that was how they caught me. Someone found out they were abberants--or guessed, anyway--and killed them. Anyone I knew I hadn't seen in two years, and it wasn't like I was friendly with my handlers."

Sure, he'd had friends. He'd had friends that had been distant. Friends that hadn't done anything for him in the last two years. There had been no best friend. No one person he could count on. And when the chips were down, no one had come for him. Not even any letters.

He wasn't even sure if they were allowed letters, but it didn't matter anyway.

"I'm going to stay here. Even if you find a way back. I'm not going back, and if someone tries to put me back, I'm still not going."

There was an edge to his voice that made it very clear that he wasn't going, even if it meant using force.

"...Well," Chloe said slowly, "I have some good news for you, in that case. There's almost no chance in hell that we could go back. I've tried pulling in favors with... people with God-like power, basically, and they couldn't give me a chance to visit. So nobody's dragging you back any time soon."

It was probably not a good idea to press Evan on his life story, Chloe decided.

Chloe was probably trying to encourage him, but the effect was the exact opposite. Rather than being reassured that he wouldn't be going back, it just made him wonder exactly what had happened to allow him to get there at all.

If Chloe had such a hard time getting there--if she couldn't do it in the slightest, even having put all that effort in--how had he gotten there? His expression darkened as he thought about it, his hands tightening into fists.

It wasn't a good sign. It wasn't like you could accidentally trip and come here. Something had to call you, and he had no idea who had called him. Everyone he'd asked had denied doing so.

Had he asked Jugemu? Maybe that was the next step.

"Thanks," he said maybe a bit too firmly. "I've got a lot to think about. Do we want to call it here?"

Chloe frowned. She supposed, after everything they'd just talked about, small talk would feel a little forced. Evan didn't seem like a small talk kind of guy, anyway.

"Sure."

It just seemed like a weird note to end on. If she was being honest.

"I guess, just, let me know if you're having trouble adjusting to the island. Though I'm sure you've gotten that offer a million times now, I mean... if you're worried about things that changed between our worlds, I've looked into some of those things. And we're from the same country in the same other universe, so..."

It was a stretch.

Evan could be a small talk kind of guy, but only if you caught him in a good mood. Right then? Right then he wasn't in a mood. He was in a mood to go home and think, pondering the potential horrible consequences of what he'd learned. It wasn't easy to go between worlds. It was hard. Difficult.

Evan's expression looked pretty dark by the time he nodded to Chloe's offer, pushing himself to his feet and getting ready to go in response.

"Thanks for the offer," Evan said, meaning it even if it probably didn't look like it. "I'll give you a call if I need anything."

He did mean that much, but he didn't stick around, heading out the door without lingering any longer.
