"9th grade? never would have guessed. My guess was going to be 11th or 10th." It wasn't like it was an easy thing to do given how a 1000-year-old could look younger than him if their abilities or traits permitted it. " Though since I'm in 12th I guess the number of new faces below me is hard to keep up with." He smiled but in the back of his mind he was still actively keeping up the nice kid facade for the sake of his own safety.

"Do they have you going through a bunch of remedial or did your training cover some general education topics?" He took a resting position against the tree, crossing arms in front of him. If this girl was here to harm him she was taking a rather long time. The disappearance of her companions did pique his self-defensive thoughts but given how polite they were he was slowly warming to the idea that this was just really a coincidence.

"I'm just hella tall, and I ain't done growing I think.", Bastet put it simply. It's not like she would be to grow as tall as her father, but there was no telling. "Not only I used to go to a normal school, but also, as part of Oni Odori, I was required to become involved with yokai communities. So it's there where I learned most of the ins and outs of those yokais who try to mingle with humans. It's fascinating how many are comfortable with living as everyday objects, animals, or rumors."

"You know I don't think I've met very many living objects....even here. I've talked to a few words and a scythe before but that's pretty much the extent of that." All of these were from the monastery of course and were the justification for all the talking weapons. In time he hoped to maybe have a weapon as good a friend as some of his fellow monks had gained over the years.

" So are your friends here yokai as well in some sense or were they strictly the product of your curse? A Yokai hunter being paired and growing attached to some Yokai who were placed on them sounds somewhat wholesome." He didn't know if the Yokai were still lurking around somewhere so his eyes sort of shifted from trees to grass, to rocks as he tried to make out if they had just truly vanished from this plane of existence.

"The Orochi brothers? They are the product of a curse, but they come from a mighty yokai, so maybe it's a little of both. It's actually nowhere as bad as it seems they respect my privacy, join me in my studies, watch over me, and are pretty much like brothers to me. And Gacha, well, she's just a cat, she just happened to take a liking to me.", perhaps "liking" was an understatement.

" Sounds like youve stumbled into a rather amazing family. At least they seem to support you rather than place some burden on you like some other people I know. The only spirit I know that follows me around is a knife....and even then they dont talk much." He gave a slight chuckle.

"I go the monasterary not to far from here and there are a number of spirits that hang around the grounds trying to scare the new members or assisting the other monks with keeping the records in order." He rubbed the back of his head pretending to be nervous about the comment

"Originally I didn't have them. Somehow after absoring the Legendary Essence of Benkei after the sword broke, I started absorbing Legendary Essences on contact. Except Gacha's, because she somehow came to become a living being.", Bastet didn't feel a genuine nervousness behind his next comment and pointed out, "Why are you pretending to be so nervous?", with a slightly nervous chuckle, except hers... Wasn't forced.

The question did somewhat catch Vlad off guard. It wasn't very common for people to call out faux behavior but those people sure were out there. "Oh..well it sort of a force of habit. I find that when I deliver news about my monastery in a nervous fashion people feel less bothered by the idea of a kid being a monk." There wasn't a reason for him to double down now, that just be weird. At best he could save some face and not appear totally inauthentic to someone he's just met.

"I'd rather not make people uncomfortable or confused so I try to avoid anything that would push toward that whole line of questioning." Vlad's body loosened a bit. He wasn't as nervous that he was going to be killed in the woods and Bastet seemed far more "normal" outwardly to him than he was with his fake persona and demeanor.

Likewise, her own nervousness began to diminish. "And it's hard to not overdo, if I am to guess. But that makes sense... But hey, I had people give me strange looks when I told them I was an yakuza or that I am not an adult yet. And yeah, I get a lot more of questions with that. Not being an adult, that is.", Bastet gave a mildly embarrassed laugh at that.

"Strangely enough I feel people will take a background like that and be unphased. I've heard of former serial killers who get less side-eyes than some of the religious clergy that lives here." Vlad rarely met other clergymen on the street and even fewer people spoke about their religious beliefs...unless they were gods. "To be honest I felt more bothered meeting a stranger in the woods than you telling me you were from the Yakuza. I think growing up here has just made me numb to the crimes or life people lived before coming here. In the end, they usually change in some way, mostly for the better."

He was visibly calmer now the strange sense of tension he may have been giving off before was all but gone and he was more open to the idea that everything was fine and not a prank by one of the monks. Bastet was also visibly different though he couldn't quite place what it was. They seemed more at ease than before and a part of him wondered if he was coming off as some murderous stranger instead.

"Hahah, I didn't live the crime life. I was more like their paranormal agent. Plus my mother would KILL ME if I did something illegal and she had to prosecute me. So to say... The yakuza I'm part of uses of crimes to distract people from what they should not be allowed to see, but we all are a good bunch where it really matters.", Bastet explained, looking even more relaxed.
