Jude noted the abrupt change, but he wasn't going to ask. It was obvious enough what she would have said, and he appreciated the change, even if it hadn't really changed anything.

"That'd be the idea, yeah. I mean, DC isn't like our world. Being a hero wasn't a thing. You didn't get paid or anything like that. So he was just a random guy running around dispensing his own personal justice with his fists, like if one of us decided we'd just run around being a hero on the island."

No, he definitely wasn't a fan.

"I think we all kind of felt bad," Jude said. "Because he didn't choose that. Maybe things would be different if he hadn't gotten caught by them."

Jude grimaced.

"I wondered a lot about what I'd have been like if I'd been there longer."

"Oh, I'd have never let that happen," Rory said, sounding not dissimilar to how she'd acted as Adrastia. She almost forgot she wasn't wearing a mask.

"I'd have crushed the whole place before I let them keep you guys. Charlotte and I were never going to give up. Both Calliope and the New Sentinel thought it was impossible. We were never going to find you guys."

She lied so she was on her back, head in his lap and she could stare up at him, eyes narrowed at the idea that she wouldn't be able to save her team.

"But we'd have done whatever it took. And we did. That's why I refuse to believe anything is impossible. Because if I'd believed it, I wouldn't have you guys. And nothing is ever going to stand in my way when it comes to my team. Not Calliope. Not Abernathy. And not the fucking Gultha."

For a moment, she was Adrastia again. Brave and confident. Headstrong, but for all the right reasons. Jude reached down, nearly about to pat her hair, and then thought better of it. No, not worth the risk. If he misjudged, he'd end up brushing her scalp, and then the nice little moment they had would be ruined.

He let his hand drop down to the bed.

"The adults seem to like saying it's impossible," Jude said with a snort. "But we're not very good at listening to that bit."

He paused for a moment, staring down at her, and then frowned a bit.

"Did you ever tell me you do well with alcohol?"

Rory snorted. "I never tried alcohol, but I always wondered if it'd even work on me or not. Why? That's such an odd question. Did you plan on buying?"

Jude shifted uncomfortably for a moment, his gaze drifting away to stare at... something else. Anything else. A wall. His bed. Whatever.

"No," Jude said. "I mean, I don't mind it. Like, I don't have anything against it. And I didn't think you'd said anything, but I just..."

He trailed off for a moment, his brow scrunching together in concentration.

"I can't figure out if I suspect that you'd get over the effect of alcohol twice as fast, or if I know that."

For a moment, Lorelai was sure Jude was about to confess that he'd been drinking. Or maybe ask if she wanted to drink with him. Both would have been odd segways. But that wasn't what he said.

Rory quirked a brow. "Oh, uh. Well, I've never tried. Maybe I'll... try it sometime but I imagine officer Genovese wouldn't like that very much, would he?"

She'd never tried? It caught Jude off guard for a moment, but once he'd had time to think about it... you know what? No. That actually made perfect sense. Her mom didn't seem the drinking type.

"I mean, as long as it's not illegal," Jude said, considering for a moment. "If we asked, and we had a good reason, he'd probably let us drink. Probably. That seems like the kind of thing I'd do, which I guess means it's the kind of thing he'd do, and considering how he grew up..."

Jude scrunched up his face a bit, considering.

"Does he even have alcohol in the house?"

Rory sat up slowly to make a show of looking around. "Dunno. Guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. I've been wondering about alcohol and... uh, well alcohol." She laughed, ran a hand through her hair.

"It's worth a try. I'm sure I'll be presented with the option in the near future anyway, even if he says no."

He was curious. Not because he really cared--he didn't see the appeal of getting drunk, even if some alcohol tasted pretty nice--but because he wanted to know if he was right. Why did he feel like he knew how she worked with alcohol? Why did he know that, the same way he knew her eyes were golden?

"We can always ask in a few days. I'm not asking. Not for a while. I'm already in the doghouse enough as it is."

"Well, you did steal his gun. On the other hand, though, I bet it wasn't nearly as terr--" And Rory stopped herself again, rubbing her face. "Christ. Heh. Uh, want to go watch TV or something. If I keep talking I'm going to just keep putting my foot in my mouth. And I'd really like not to... well do that."

She coughed, then cleared her throat, but there was nothing to stare at now. Nothing to do with her hands. Nothing to calm her nerves.
