Is it just me?

Jude was having doubts. In fact, that was pretty much a constant thing. He was just nothing but doubts. Doubts about who he was. Doubts about what he wanted. Doubts about what he was supposed to be doing.

He lay on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, and wondering if it was him. Was it him? Was Neve just fine? He'd had fun in the simulation, but once he'd come out--come out and got heckled for like six different things by Travis and Rory--he'd just been left feeling judgy.

Part of him felt like he'd only liked her because she'd been useful.

Jude had been cooped up in his room all day. Rory had been pacing the hall for at least thirty minutes when she decided she couldn't take it. He was being so quiet. She knocked on the door before just coming in and plopping down on the floor near his bed.

"Hey, bud, how are you? You've been too quiet since we got back from the VR... did Travis and I go too hard on you this time?"

She didn't even wait. Did he? Of course not. She'd never wait.

Jude was pretty used to it. So he just kind of glanced over, letting out a sigh.

"Was Neve... weird to you?" He finally said, rolling the thoughts over in his head.

Rory looked confused momentarily. "She was... really hyperactive and child-like for sure. Everyone's a little weird on this island."

Okay. Alright. Maybe it wasn't going to be as bad as he thought, and Jude seemed to visibly relax.

"I... I kind of liked her, back in the VR. Like, I thought she was nice. The kind of girl I could... date, I guess. Especially considering how few people our age there were going to be on the colony. And then I woke up and my first thought was maybe we could go out, and then she was like..."

Jude's face pinched a bit.

"She was a bit like a kid. Like... I don't know. I feel judgmental. I feel like that with almost everyone. Back when you said that you felt like I thought you were stupid, I meant it when I said I didn't, but... I do with everyone else. Like, everyone. It's my first instinct."

Rory pulled herself onto Jude's bed to sit with him, legs crossed at the ankles. She settled her hands on her feet as she listened. It felt weird to imagine anyone from the team dating someone. Like having a sibling you were close to suddenly... suddenly dragged away.

Rory couldn't think about that.

"Well, uh, if you're not attracted to her outside the VR there isn't much you can do... beyond that, Jude you're really smart. With Giltenn, you're fucking brilliant. It's downright intimidating. You're pretty much going to be smarter than everyone all the time, no two ways about that. So sooner or later you're going to have to realize almost no one can be on your level there.

"That said, it's kinda slim pickings around here. I don't think there's anything wrong with you, Jude."

Jude let out a slightly overdramatic groan at that.

"I don't know. It doesn't feel like slim pickings. It feels like everyone just... gets dates here. Like..."

Jude trailed off, scowling.

"I don't know. I want to just... do normal teenage things. And I'm doing that thing again, where I just ramble about my problems and ignore yours. Because... I don't know. You're probably feeling the same way."

Probably. Maybe.

Lorelai laughed a little, air wrapping her arm around his shoulders. "Nah. I've been single my whole life. Never even held a hand all lewd like. I'm mostly just concerned with keeping all of you safe and happy. So if a date is going to make you happy..."

Rory had to think about it. She couldn't set him up because she didn't know of anyone and she was pretty sure Jude would hate the idea. Dating websites were out. "Huh. I can help you with some teenage things, but I'm pretty sure this ain't one of them. But do remember that everyone going on dates is probably just because they have fewer standards than you do. Which is fine. It's fine to have high standards, it just means it's going to take you a little longer to find someone."

She hadn't either. Had Travis? He felt like Travis probably had. Had Janelle? God, why was Janelle more likely to have gone on a date than either of them?

"Sorry," Jude said. "I shouldn't be dumping this on you. An- Officer Genovese is making me start doing to therapy. I might have..."

Jude trailed off again, making a frustrated noise.

"I keep doing the same things."

That was the core of it, wasn't it? That he was doing the same things over and over. Back at home he'd run off on his own and nearly got himself killed, rather than relying on his team. Here, he'd run off on his own and nearly got himself killed, rather than relying on his team. Back home, he'd judged people for being less than him, and now here he was doing the same thing. Back home, he'd vented to Rory without taking into account how much help she needed. And now here he was, doing the same thing.

"I want to do better and I don't know how."

"Nah, you've grown. You think about the things you did more. You're working on it, but it won't happen overnight. That's fine, Jude." She paused. "I appreciate you trying with me."

And Rory had an idea. How well it would work, she didn't know. "Close your eyes," she told Jude before rubbing his shoulders, careful never to touch his skin. That wouldn't go well. "You have to relax. It sounds stupid but stop thinking with your head and try thinking with your gut — your heart. You're overthinking things right now."
