In the Crook of a Tree...

"Dolphins, one of the ocean's most beloved animals, are actually mammals...not fish..."

Cameron rolled his eyes. Gee...you learn something new everyday... he thought to himself. He swiftly slammed shut The Maritime Handbook on Our Oceans, a book he had swept off the shelf without so much as a thought.

Well, so much for that! He adjusted his spot on the branch, leaning over to see farther along the trail. It didn't seem as though anyone were coming...

The branch suddenly shook with a terrific force. "What the--?" he yelled. The book crashed to the forest floor below. His legs unhinged from the trunk of the tree and he spiraled downward. He grasped the branch with his elbow, struggling to hang on. As he finally slipped from the 30-foot high branch, he shot out a stream of ice below him. The ice swirled majestically into a spiraling slide, which he coasted down quickly...

In a brand new sweater she'd just bought in the city, Kelly was walking around the forest, mostly because she was bored, and nobody really cared about her new sweater. At home, of course, everyone absolutely fawned over Kelly's new sweaters, new hairstyles, new everything. Actually, they fawned over anything of Kelly's. She was just popular, and used to it.

In the forest, it was kind of cold, but not cold enough that she needed a jacket. At least the snow was gone, even though it was kind of muddy, and her pink Uggs definately did not need dirt.

As she wandered in between trees, she heard something shaking violently and ran forward. It was a guy, and he was sliding down a tree or something. She giggled silently, it looked so funny! But she ran over.

"Are you okay?" she asked, sounding concerned even though he looked fine.

Cameron scowled and looked at the girl. Judging by her appearance, he guessed that she was one of the In-Crowd girls at school... What was her name? Kelly... that was it.

"I'm fine..." he said, but it came out like a snarl. Breathing out an agitated sigh, he tried again. "I'm fine. Thanks for asking."

Again he glanced up at the tree. There was nothing to be seen. He rand a hand through his hair.

He looked at the ground, and was blinded by a hot pink pair of Uggs. He snorted.

"Why are you hiking in those?" he said.

"Hiking?" she glanced down at her feet. "Oh.. um... I wasn't really hiking, exactly. More like 'bored walking.'"

She followed his gaze up to the tree he'd just fallen out of.

"So, what happened? How'd you fall?" she asked.

He rubbed his head wearily, his fingers tenderly touching a growing pump knot...

"I don't know..." he said, shrugging. "The branch just started shaking... like something--or someone--was TRYING to make me fall..." He shrugged again. "Sounds pretty ridiculous, huh?" He grinned. "You're probably just thinking I'm trying to cover up my own clumsiness!"

Kelly shrugged and nodded.

"Mmm hmm.. It's probably a killer tree." She grinned. "I'm kidding, I believe you. Everything's weird here. "

She brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes and stuck out her hand. "I'm Kelly."

He smiled. "Cam," he said, extending his hand.

Awkwardly he looked upward. The trees hid the sky, allowing only thin patches of green light to filter down to the air around them. He sighed, a little ice droplets shot outward, a few landing in Kelly's hair.

"Omigosh, I'm sorry... Ice powers..." He grinned and plucked the tiny pieces of hail out of her locks.

Kelly winced as several hard things hit her head. Cam started picking someting out of her hair, and from the words "ice powers" and the small droplets of water slowly soaking into her head, she guessed it was ice.

"It's okay," she said, and smoothed out the top of her head.

"So, you've got ice powers? What can you do?" She laughed. "Besides hail."

"I can pull water out of the air and freeze anything that I please..." he said. "I can create icicles to use as weapons..." He suddenly trailed off, and a tear flashed in his eye. It froze almost instantly. He plucked it away.

"Problem is..." he continued quietly, "... I'm not always great at controlling them. People... get hurt. That's why I was forced to come here. One too many accidents back home."

"Oh, um, that's not cool, I guess," Kelly said. Was he crying? Did I make him cry? Do guys get all defensive if you say 'Gee, sorry I made you cry?' Okay, uh, just forget it, Kelly.

"Er, yeah, that's why a lot of people get sent here," Kelly noted, even though that wasn't why she was sent here.
