It had been a long night already. Abi had been giving the engine of her rig a good once over before she was supposed to meet Saeta for the bonfire. They had it all planned out. It was going to be a wonderful evening. At least until the first reports came in of monsters. Several had been spotted all over the island, attacking anyone in sight. She wasn't supposed to be on duty, but dispatch had called for all officers to file in and assist. That being said, it looked like her plans would have to wait.
She had just been packing up to leave when she caught sight of it. A large monster lumbering around on the edge of the forest. It was huge and reminded her of one of those armored dinosaurs. Anklyo something or other. She had seen it in a book not long ago, but couldn't remember it for the life of her.She sighed as she watched it lumbering around. It looked like it was looking for something, but she couldn't see any eyes. Still, it seemed to have the impression of a creature hunting.
It continued to skulk around for a moment, swinging its head back and forth, until it oriented itself in the direction of the city. It seemed to stop for a few moments before it roared loudly and began to move with surprising speed towards the city. There was no questioning what was going on. If the reports were correct then this thing was one of the monsters that had been popping up and it was clearly up to no good. "Alright... I suppose I'll handle this," she muttered as she picked up her radio to call in the sighting.
She wasn't sure what code this fell in, so she just called it as she saw it. "Big thing, walking towards the western end of the city. I'm going to engage." Dispatch crackled back a confirmation, and she heard the info go out to everyone else. This was going to be a really long night she muttered as her thoughts drifted to Saeta again. She hoped that she wouldn't be upset about this. And made a mental note to make it up to her later. For now, she needed to deal with big dumb and stompy.
Abigale zipped up her coat as she ran after the large monster trying to get its attention.
"Hey.... Biggun.. Where the fuck you think yer going." Abi shouted as the monster lumbered past her. It seemed to not be interested in her, and more so in the many more victims waiting for it in the city. She cursed loudly, yelling at it again, throwing rocks, and even shooting her pistol at it to get it to stop. All of it was in vain, as the creature was too large and too heavily armored to take any notice of her. She hadn't wanted to use her rig, not yet. She had no proper coolant to keep it in check, but it looked as though at this point she had little other choices.
"alright" she muttered as she turned and walked briskly towards the mechanical behemoth. "have it yer way then." She climbed expertly up the side of her rig and slipped easily into the cockpit. Inside she removed her coat, tossing it behind her seat, as she brought the systems to life. She flipped several switches, lighting up the consoles around her, and causing the machine to shudder as it began warm up. Around her, a voice began reading off diagnostics and stated that all systems were nominal. "Won't be long fer that eh, bitch?" Abi asked as she forced the machine to turn.
From outside the mechanical beast would start up many large floodlights as it turned, taking several large steps that caused the earth to tremble, while it lined up to face the monster that was now advancing on the city. Moments later a hiss of pressurized air, and several projectiles were launched. all of which landing on the monster before exploding. She had used a volley of grenades to better get its attention.
The monster turned, shaking itself like a wet dog before opening its massive tooth filled Maw to rawr at Abi and her machine. The small pilot responded in kind, popping a cassette into her rigs audio system. "C'mon then." she muttered as the Immigrant song blared from the inside and outside speakers.
The monster charged, running on all four legs to attack her. Abi if the same, kicking the lower controls to direct her rig towards the creature. The pair ran at each other for only a second or so before the gap between their massive bodies disappeared and they smashed together. The sound was loud, a combination of steel bending under stress, engines kicking into high gear, and monstrous roars. all of it wrapped up together in the intro to the song. Never before had such a symphony of chaos been heard on the island.
The monster had reared up and slammed its front legs down onto Abi's rig. Its claws dug into the metal, while its jaws wrapped around the hip causing several alarms to go off inside the cockpit. She answered with an extended volley of rounds from the machine gun. The weapon whirred in a deafening chorus of death, as the bullets tore into the creature's underside, causing it to roar loudly and push off of her.
The push itself had been rather forceful, causing the rig to stumble, and nearly tip over. If not for the fact that Abi was a superior pilot, the fight might have been over now. Instead, she regained her balance and aimed up, shooting off the 100 Cal. unfortunately, the monster's tail came into contact with her, knocking he back again as she fired, causing the shot to go wide, and rather than punching cleanly into it, simply tore a chunk of the bony armor from its body.
It roared again, louder and angrier than before, and Abi did the same roaring as loud as she could inside her machine, despite not being able to be heard outside.
Once again the monster reared up, smashing its weight into the rig. More alarms went off in the pit, as warning lights blinked and jets of steam shot out of the right vents. A warning was announcing "Temperatures reaching critical levels!" Abi cursed loudly. She knew this would happen. Without coolant, she would overheat and the systems would shut down. This thing wasn't meant to run without coolant, and now it was in actual combat. Even in the pit, the temperatures were rising, causing sweat to run down her arms, as she was rocked about, by the blows of the monster.
"Yer time is up asshole." SHe declared loudly as she lined up the 100 Cal. again. When she went to fire it though, an alarm interrupted her. The system for heavy weapons had gone offline as power was rerouted to more crucial systems.
"DAMNIT FUCK DAMNIT FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK..." She screamed as she kicked at the various panels in anger and frustration.
Another blow from the monster sent her rig reeling to the side, nearly knocking her out of her seat. She managed to recover for a moment, straightening out her machine for another moment, before it continued its assault. This time it latched onto her, holding her rig and pushing it back. Abi continued to yell and curse as she tried to get the systems to restore, but in this overheated state, she was losing more and more systems by the second. Even the engine blocks that powered its legs were failing as the monster pushed her back.
She needed a way to get some control, and as she continued to kick at her console in rage an idea dawned on her. She prayed silently as she brought her fist down a little enthusiastically into a button on her right side. For a moment nothing happened, she sat in silence as alarms blared and metal groaned. ANd then... She heard it. The whir of hydraulics firing up.
Outside the rig, pins had begun to rais out of its feat. They whirred loudly, extending out several feet, before shooting back through the feet and into the ground, with a sound akin to a shotgun. Abi had engaged the grip stakes, and now, while these were engaged, her rig was locked into the ground. Nothing short of the end o the world would be able to push her from this spot.
She laughed triumphantly as she began shutting down systems that controlled the legs, and guidance for her rig. All power was going to be diverted to weapons, she was going to kill this thing at any cost.
Moments later and a green light turned on, signaling enough power had become available. She screamed again, this time in triumph, as she slammed down on the controls for the 100 cal. "It's been fun, but I gotta get home." She yelled as the weapon began to fire. One round per second was the rate at which the large cannon-like gun unloaded into the soft exposed underbelly of the creature. It screamed as round after round was shot into it. After taking 7 direct hits that cut through it, it pushed off of the rig, causing one of the legs of the machine to snap like a twig.
AS the monster turned and limped away, so to did Abi's rig collapse to the ground. She was in luck though, as she hit the ground in such a way that she managed to get one more shot off with the canon, causing the monster to collapse from its wounds.
Abi sat in the pit for a few moments breathing heavily. Inside it was black, most of the systems had shut down, with the exception of the audio system. Looking through the window she could see that the monster was still breathing. It was still alive, just severely wounded. She would have to deal with it herself now.
From outside, the hatch to the pit could be seen opening and Abi slipped out. She was carrying in her hands a rifle.
"WHAT? WHAT? WHATS? THAT HUH? YOU THINK YOU BAD? LOOK AT YOU NOW. LOOK AT YOU NOW MOTHER FUCKER. GET OVER HERE WHEN IM TALKING TO YOU. YOU AINT SHIT. LOOK AT YOU. YOU KNOW WHAT IM GONNA DO? IM GOING TO GET A NEW RIG, AND IM GONNA COME BACK HERE AND LAY ALL YOUR FRIENDS OUT RIGHT HERE, RIGHT BESIDE YOU. WHAT? WELCOME TO MANTA CARLOS YOU FUCKING CLOWN."
Was just a few of the vulgar things Abi screamed as she approached the monster. It made no attempt to run or fight, instead, it lay still, drawing long labored breaths. Abi continued to shout when she was standing in front of it, pointing her rifle at a point in its throat. Without any regard for anything else, she emptied her magazine into the soft flesh, causing it to stop breathing.
But in the moments of silence to follow she became able to hear something much worse. It started as a faint squeak in the distance. Nothing too intimidating. Shortly after that, she spotted the first of the little bastards that would come next. It was perched on a rock watching her. the small biped looked like a dinosaur with its long snout, short front arms, and a long tail. It cocked its head chirping for a moment before she loaded in another magazine and shot it. It died easily, falling to the ground and spasming for a moment before going still.
Another squeak alerted her to a second one and she turned to look at her spotting the next. She dispatched it the same way and was met with several more squeaks. Turning again she spotted three more, standing over the body of the first. All around her the chirping was growing louder and Abi suddenly realized she was running into trouble.
The sound of running footsteps caused her to turn, but not fast enough as one of the creatures ran by her, cutting into her arm with its tail. "FUCK YOU" She screamed as she managed to shoot it in the back of the head. This seemed to excite the others. Either that or the smell of her spilled blood was enough to make them hungry.
As more and more appeared, Abi backed up, retreating to her rig for a moment. Once inside she could hear the little beasts swarming. They were crawling all over the metal, scratching at it, gnawing and otherwise trying to get to her. She couldn't tell how big the swarm was but guessing by the sounds it was too big to fight off. Somehow she knew she wasn't getting out of this. She cursed loudly and settled into her seat, her thoughts drifting to Saeta, and how she wasn't going to see her again.
She sighed loudly as she looked around for paper or a something she could use to get a message to her pigeon. Unfortunately, all that she had was the cassette tape still in her audio. She sighed again knowing she was going to have record over one of her beloved cassettes. But this was important, more so than her music.
"Pigeon.... I'm sorry, I don't think I'm going to make it home. I.... Don't know whats happening, or what went wrong. I... I love you Pigeon. That's the most important thing. I believe everything happens for a reason. I came here to this place, so I could meet you. I came here so that we could both learn about love. And now... You are free. I know you cant make me any promises. Just.... Don't forget me. And don't be sad. I'm going to Valhalla. I'll live forever now. Please, Pigeon. Don't forget to live. Don't throw away everything. Anyways.. I gotta go. I hear them coming for me. Wish me luck. I love you Pigeon."
She ended the recording and pulled the tape before slipping it into her pocket. She sighed loudly looking up through the window of her cockpit. Many of the little beasts were crawling on it trying to get in. Eventually, they would, and she wasn't in the mood to sit here and wait for them. If she was going to die, it was going to be out there, fighting like the devil. There wasn't much left to do, aside from one more thing. To her right was a compartment, and inside a single cassette. Written on it were the words "Road to Valhalla!" This was her death music. She had always wanted to die to an amazing track, and "The Halls of Valhalla" By Judas Priest seemed fitting.
As the music began to blast from her speakers, she smiled at the beasts above her trying to get in. She had one trick left to get out. She hit a few switches, activating her rigs ejection sequence. "Take care boys" she taunted as she hit the final button, launching the top of the pit into the air. It landed with a crash twenty feet away, killing not just the creatures on it, but also the ones that were on the ground where it landed. Immediately another creature tried to crawl into the opening, but Abi was ready. In the moment of confusion caused by her last trick, she had slipped behind her seat. "HAVE A SEAT BITCH" SHe yelled as she pulled the lever at the base of the seat, causing it to shoot out through the opening, smashing through the creature on its way out.
She followed the seat out, roaring as loud as she could. She began firing controlled bursts into the crowd of creatures, attempting to thin out their numbers to no avail. For everyone that hit the ground, it seemed like two more would take its place. The swarm had started to circle her now, and somehow she knew she wasn't getting out of this one. Still, there was no way she was going to be easy.
She continued to yell and fire her rifle as she pulled out a flair from her inside pocket. It burst into life with bright reg sparks as she slammed it into her thigh. She could feel the heat from the magnesium as it burned. It was glorious. One of the creatures broke off the swarm and charged her. It wasn't fast enough however as she stepped back, jamming the flair into, causing its skin to burst into flame. It screamed and rolled across the ground before taking off back into the swarm, setting several other aflame. It continued to send off sparks from the flair as it ran, causing a small chaotic mess within the swarm before it finally went out.
The entire time she had continued to shoot into the group, cutting down any and all that were unlucky enough to cross her line of fire.
As she fought she caught sight of something that caused her heart to race. A glint of golden hair. Her angel was coming. She could see Saeta in full sprint, armed and on the way. "OH YOU SONS OF BITCHES ARE IN TROUBLE NOW." she shouted as she continued to fire. Her focus was on her girlfriend now, as she waved, showing that she was ok.
At that moment of distraction, one of the creatures broke off the spinning swarm again and ran towards her. She hadn't seen it, she hadn't been paying attention. Maybe if she had kept her head and remained in the moment she might have been ok. But she had gotten excited and forgot her place. The creature in question passed right by her, whipping its tail violently, catching Abi in the throat.
A look of shock crossed her face as she realized what had happened. Her gun fell from her grip as her hand reached up, touching the line of blood that now poured from the large gash in her throat. She had been slit from left to right and was bleeding out. Everything was going dark, her vision fading out, her mind going blurry, she was bleeding too fast for there to be any hope of survival. Saeta was still coming through, she could see her.
Abi opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out as she dropped to her knees. Everything had gone quiet, it was as if there was nothing here anymore. She looked up to the sky, and for a moment, she could swear that she could see the valkyrie circling overhead. Her time had come. She was going to be taken away.
Suddenly in this moment, she realized that she didn't want this. All her life she had lived for this death. Glorious and battle fueled. Now that she had it, all she wanted was more time. She wanted Saeta, she wanted life. She wanted to grow old and die. That was the irony of it.
"Pigeon....." Was the last thing she managed to mutter as she collapsed forward onto the ground.
The swarm began to tighten it's circle, all of the creatures screaming with excitement as they smalled the blood from the fresh kill.
She had just been packing up to leave when she caught sight of it. A large monster lumbering around on the edge of the forest. It was huge and reminded her of one of those armored dinosaurs.
