With dinner concluded mostly in silence and the animals put to sleep, Erina retired to the large chamber that she and Xeros shared. It was empty, much to her relief. Erina began to undress, untying bows to pull off her dress, rolling down her stockings, putting whatever she'd worn that day into the laundry chute and pulling on a dark blue silk nightgown, then donning her robe on top of it. She sat at her vanity and began to brush out her hair, winding down for the evening in private before Xeros showed up to go to bed as well.

She'd forced herself to try and get used to sharing a room and a bed with her husband. He'd said he would be fine with separate rooms, but properly married couples were supposed to sleep together, so she'd let her parents make that argument and hadn't argued back.

Sleeping with someone at her side was uncomfortable. She hardly got a good night's sleep since they'd been married a few months ago, and it was starting to show under her eyes, much to her chagrin. She figured she was going to have to get used to it sooner or later, because things weren't going to change any time soon. She was married now, and that was that.

Erina slipped her wedding ring off of her finger and set it on her vanity, then stared at it for a long time in silence while she continued to run her brush through her hair.

Life was different now, so very different than it always had been for him. Married and living in a new place, but he would adapt and he'd meet it all in stride. Xeros was doing his best to make the transition easier, he'd given Erina space when requested but insisted on talking when he deemed necessary, he kept his warm smile on his face, yes he was dealing with the changes best he could.

They had dinner in silence mostly, though he did try to strike up a conversation once or twice, his wife proved stubborn and cold, but he sensed more behind that. He'd seen her with the animals, her softness, her kind heart, her warm smile, yes she was hiding that side, but he intended to find it.

His preparation for bed was a bit less complicated than Erina's, basically him slipping off his normal clothing, which today was his simple tunic and into something a bit more comfortable for sleeping. He'd stretch a bit, before slipping out of the room to retrieve something he'd hidden in his cloak, he suspected that she'd be ready once he'd returned.

The prince's suspicions were proven true when he did return, she was busy brushing her hair out. He'd give her nod and one of his usual smiles, "it's a nice night, stars are shinning bright." He held something, a simple brown package, his special something hidden behind the brown paper, "a few of the nocturnal birds are singing."

Erina straightened instinctively as he entered the room to change, and stayed that way even as he ducked out briefly. She met his eyes in the mirror of her vanity for a moment before looking elsewhere. He was trying to be cheerful and romantic, but she wasn't having any of it, as usual. But...

She'd seen something in his hands and glanced back up at his reflection. What was that? She looked away again. "Awfully late for a package delivery," she remarked, pretending like she didn't know it was probably something he was trying to give to her to win over her affections. Erina was not one to be wooed with presents and pretty words.

"Package? Oh no, I've had this a while, brought it with me from home," he set the wrapped semi box shaped item on a small tble, "had it one of my cloaks, had forgotten about it for a bit." He did suspect she'd like it though, something he believed they had in common, he took his seat, "I've noticed a few of the birds seem a bit drawn to the mansion, or more likely drawn to you."

Her gift of communicating with animals was special, "you have a strong bond with the ones here it seems, especially your raven." So many warriors and mages with combative magic, it was refreshing to see something else, something simpler but somehow more special.

"What's it like?" he asked curiously, "is it just like talking?" He tilted his head, "people always seem to look at animals without much thought, like there all the same, but there not, are they?"

From his home? Interesting. Erina watched him out of the corner of her eye as he put the package down. She was going to make a point in leaving it there until he actually offered it to her; no sense in letting him see that she was a little intrigued by it. She set down her brush in its spot and pulled her silvery hair over her shoulder to twist it slowly into a braid while he spoke to her, staring at the ring sitting in front of her rather than at him.

He made some rather obvious remarks about her affinity to birds, as well as other animals in general. She didn't see anything worth responding to until he actually asked her a question which begged an answer. "No, they are not," she replied, then thought a little bit more on his first question. "I suppose you could say it is just like talking. Only, with the mind, and not with the mouth," she chose her words carefully.

The braid was finished and she tied it with a ribbon, which left her nothing else to do, so she rose from her vanity at last and drifted across the room to douse some lights and draw the curtains on the windows, leaving them only with the illumination of the lamps on their respective bedside tables. She hesitated for a moment before slipping out of her robe and settling into her side of the bed, picking up the book from her nightstand and thumbing through it to the bookmark.

He nodded, he didn't stare or gawk as she slid the robe off, she was a beautiful girl, but he was a gentleman when it came to that regard. "I think people would notice how there individuals more, if they watched closer." He wasn't going to reveal what that package was just yet, he might wait until she asked about it.

"Names are important." Xeros stretched a bit, "there a part of identity, can sometimes change how people view you depending on the culture." Despite him being a bit odd, not what one would expect from royalty, he was intelligent, "how do they get their names? The animals you befriend, do you name them, or do they name themselves?"

Moving to his side of the bed, he took a seat, it was intriguing, "I suspect you help figure it out what to call them, since the words we often use as names may not have meaning to them" He was a bit goofy at times, but he was smart.

She considered and nodded once, perhaps if people were more perceptive, then yes, they would realize how individualized animals could be, each with their own preferences and habits, no two alike, just like people.

Erina let him finish his thoughts completely on the subject of names before responding with carefully-chosen words, as always, "Sometimes they name themselves, other times I name them and they accept that as their name, sometimes they are named by their parents or peers, it all really just depends on the creature. But as for all of mine, I named them myself when they were born and they just accepted those names as their own. I have been with all of them since birth. That's one of the reasons why we share such a close bond."

She was opening up, just a little, because the subject pleased her, and she felt that sharing this information with him would allow him to understand her a bit better.

Xeros listened, smiling as he did, this was nice, just talking, communication had finally started though it was an odd way to start it, "you raised them?" Now that was something, to befriend a creature and get a pet was one thing, but to raise so many animals from scratch, "that must of been quite the experience, raising them all up."

He tilted his head, thinking for a moment, "there family to you," he finally said, "people take pets a lot...but there not just pets to you." He'd seen the look on her face when holding and caring for them, almost like a mother caring for their child. "You care a lot about them, you look happy when you hold them."

The mysterious package still sat on the table, Xeros was patient and didn't really want to rush explaining it. "What was it like? Raising them, watching them grow with you?" it sounded pleasant, having something living stay with you through everything.

Erina shrugged. It wasn't as much of a big deal to her as it seemed to be to him, raising animals from birth. Her parents had allowed her to do so in order to train her for raising children, she assumed. He was correct in stating that they were like her family, though, and she nodded a little, her eyes trained on her book as she began to read.

"It's exactly like it sounds," she replied, getting a little bored with all of the questions in this conversation. She sighed and put her book down, then reached over and turned out her bedside lamp, curling up beneath the sheets and turning away from him. "I'm tired," she said finally, shutting her eyes. Mostly she just didn't want to talk anymore.

Good talk, yes this had been a good conversation, something they at least shared interest in. Sighing sleepily, he slid into his side of the bed, glancing at the package he'd brought in. It was something special, something he always kept with him, something he wanted to share with her, but he was patient, he could wait to show her.

He glanced over at her, even without the arranged element to the marriage, they would still be considered an odd couple, she was taller and generally looked older, she was what one expected out of royalty, he just wasn't that, never had been. Xeros wanted to know her better, open up to her and see her do the same.

Slowly his eyes slid shut, sleep took him, he dreamt of many things, of animals and home, of things that drove him, things that had made him who he was today. Xeros was an odd prince, but there was far more to him than most saw, more than most expected.
