Despite the snow, Sam was determined to take Bel out on a date. They had been together for a little while now and things had been good. But Sam was starting to realize that he didn't know as much about his new girlfriend as he probably should have. He didn't even know when her birthday was, and that was unacceptable.

So the plan was to go out to eat and let these things come up in the conversation. It was perfect. He really felt a strong connection to Bel, though he still couldn't explain it. He didn't want to ruin this. He wanted them to work.

He wrapped an arm around her waist as the two of them walked down one of the cleared sidewalks downtown towards the restaurant. "This snow's somethin' awful, innit? Workin' on me nerves like nothin' else."

Bel huddled close to Sam for warmth as they walked to the restaurant. The snow continued to fall, and the wind had picked up somewhat during the evening, causing it to swirl slightly round them as they headed down the street.

"Thank the gods," Bel murmured in relief as she leant in closer to Sam when the wind gusted, "The restaurant is just over there," she said gesturing with a gloved hand and with which she suddenly grabbed Sam's hand so they could both make a mad dash for the building and get out of the cold.

Bel appreciated Sam's gesture of wanting to go on a date and just getting out of the dorms for a while. She had also been going a bit stir crazy. She was not used to being cooped up inside for so long, but this chill in the air made her wish she was back at the school curled up somewhere warm.

Glad to finally be indoors, Bel unwound her scarf and undid her jacket to reveal the short tartan skirt she had chosen along with the dark green cashmere-like top. "Geez, this cold can go back from where it came," she said with a tiny sigh as she removed her gloves and looked at Sam who looked almost as cold as she was.

Sam was likewise peeling off his layers once the two of them were inside. Just his jacket, gloves, and scarf. They would need time to dry of the melted snow before the two of them left again. "Almost makes me wish I was Yule instead of Samhain," he joked with a grin. "Maybe I'd have some power to kick the weather back to normal."

Jokes aside, Sam was starting to get worried about this weather. The snow was umreasonabun high at this point and he had no idea how much longer it was going to be going. Not that he minded all of it. The cold was an excellent excuse for Bel and he to spend nights together.

The hostess led the two of them to a table where he took a seat across from Bel, smiling at her warmly. "Well, we can warm up in here and fill our bellies, aye? Maybe I'll even get my first legal drink now that I'm eighteen," he added when the server was far enough away to not hear him.

Bel took off her coat, stuffing her gloves in the pockets and the scarf in one of the sleeves of her coat and just shook her head at his Yule comment. "I don't think you'd make a good Yule," she joked. "Not cheery enough," she joked. It was said that Yule was, despite the cold weather of the season, one of the kinder and more cheerier of gods.

When the hostess arrived, Bel followed behind both of them as she led them to their table, glancing around the restaurant. It was fairly quiet tonight. Thanking the woman, Bel took her seat across from Sam.

"Your first legal drink, huh?" she grinned, assuming his birthday must have been a few days ago and he hadn't said anything to her. Although, she had sort of done the same thing, and couldn't be mad at him for not telling her. In fact, her own birthday had been a short while ago, and her and a few friends had already gone out to have her first legal drink.

"I guess this means we are celebrating your birthday too?" she asked curiously as she looked across the table at him.

"I'm plenty cheery," Sam retorted with his tongue stuck out. "I haven't heard any complaints from you yet."

His smile fell a bit, not in a sad way but just a slightly more somber one. "Yeah. Sorry I didn't mention it. I barely remember my birthday most years until after it's past. The Druids, they never really celebrated it for me. Always said that getting a year older wasn't really the kind of change I should be worrying myself with, when life was full of so many other big transitions."

In truth Sam hadn't really missed celebrating his birthdays. Or even wanted to when he was a kid. He remembered that it had felt wrong to celebrate without his sister. At least the ghosts get could speak to had often wished him well on those days.

"Your birthday was not long ago? Huh, same for me. Guess we're both January babies. We get more and more in common every day, huh babe?"

Bel nodded, both in understanding and that her birthday had been celebrated relatively a short while ago. "It does seem that way, doesn't it," Bel said with a grin when he mentioned that they had a lot in common.

"My birthday is on Epiphany. The Druids liked to remind me of it though. Every year, we'd go out and burn a huge Yule log which ashes were then saved and used to bless the crops in the spring," she told Sam with a small smile.

She had, in fact, quite enjoyed the ritual as it was directly linked to Beltane and it had also helped her forget how alone she felt without her brother, Cai.

Sam's eyebrows raised significantly at that little revelation. "Epiphany? Really?" He laughed a bit, wiping down his face incredulously. "I was born on Epiphany too. Wild, right?"

Despite his cheery, joking expression, Sam could see their fates changing. Something about this moment, this revelation was changing their relationship and culling the happy endings that their relationship had. Not... all of them, but so many. So so many that most of what he could see was heartbreak and solitude.

His mouth twitched just a bit and he gripped his drink a bit, needing something to hold onto or else his hands might start shaking. What could it mean? His discomfort was hard to hide, but he was doing his best. He couldn't tell Bel what he was seeing, so he didn't want to worry her further and possibly cull even more of their happy endings.

When Sam said he was also born on Epiphany, Bel, who had been undoing her heavy cloth napkin, stopped and looked straight at him, sort of shocked by that revelation. For some reason, she had thought it was like now, the 17th or 18th, not the 6th like her.

"That is kinda wild," she agreed as she looked at Sam a bit funny now, sensing his unease somewhat, and beginning to feel anxious for some reason. A reason, she could not quite pinpoint yet. Maybe she was picking up on Sam's own discomfort, though she didn't quite realise that at that moment.

"Oh, did I tell you I have been reading the book you gave me for Christmas?" You know, the fairytales?" she said while taking a sip of the wine she had ordered. "One of the ones you marked is a favorite of mine too," she told him, hoping to lighten the mood by changing the subject.

"Is it?" Sam said, trying to smile and pretend everything was alright. And doing a poorer and poorer job of it by the second. He could see them, all the strings of fate leading to the endings he wanted: marriage, children, growing old together. They were still breaking, one by one.

As he watched the possible fates unravel, dots began to connect in Sam's mind. His smile fell slowly as he remembered things about their relationship and saw them in new context. His hand shot out and grabbed at Bel's, squeezing her knuckles gently.

"Bel... can you tell me about your childhood? Before the Druids. Back when things were... normal..."

Bel looked at Sam very strangely when he grabbed her hand, not sure what the problem was but sensing, from his tone of voice and the way he was looking at her, that something was bothering him.

"I guess so?" Bel told him with some uncertainty in her voice as she looked down at his hand on hers with a slightly confused look on her face.

"I mean before the druids, I lived on a tiny island, Man, I think it was called," she told Sam, searching his face, and getting a very weird feeling of something being wrong, but continuing on despite it.

"It was a nice place, I remember my mom used to take my brother and me down the rocks where we'd watch the puffins nesting, and sometimes we'd go down to the water and catch crabs or gather clams on the beach..." she told him sort of smiling at the memories. She had kind of forgotten about that.
