Mallory nodded. While this wasnt exactly her teaching him modern history, his views on the multiverse was interesting to listen to. "Butterflies, Jude. a small action can have large ripples. If the world we are in now didn't have two wars, the differences would have been less obvious. To notice these things we just have to pay attention."

She looked back at the sheet in her hand. On the page was her notes for this session. A few of them were important historical events, but the one she put on the top was just a simple reminder to stay on topic. "So, uh, The second world war ran between 1939 and 1945. It ended when the Allied forces took Berlin and Hitler took his own life." she tapped her page. "Did you get all that?"

Had he told her? No, he hadn't told her, but he probably should have to start. That would have made things a lot easier.

"Yes," Jude said quickly. "I actually - I could recite it back to you, if you wanted. I have a perfect memory, so as long as you tell me something once, I'll remember it."

He definitely should have started with that.

"If you have book suggestions, I can read through them in between classes, and we can just... discuss? Rather than explaining. That might be easier overall for both of us."

"Oh, is that so?" She asked, surprised. At least it meant that he was easier to teach. All she needed to do was give him reading material.

"Well, uh." She searched her mind for possible books on modern history. Taking a blank sheet from her desk, she wrote a few titles down.

"These should be helpful. One's on World war two, but the rest are about the world post-1950s."

The closer they got to modern, the farther things deviated. The Great War was mostly the same, and then there was an analogous cold war that was kind of similar, but everything else? At best broad strokes were the same, but all the details were wrong.

If he'd had anything less than an honest-to-goodness perfect memory, memorizing two totally different sets of histories would be next to impossible.

"I'll read all these before our next lesson," Jude said, giving the titles only a brief once-over. He was a pretty fast reader, although nothing supernatural.

"I guess you lived many of these events?" It was a pretty safe bet she was... some kind of supernatural, right? He might have guessed just unnaturally smart, but the grey tint to her skin tipped him off.

"I lived through a fair amount of them." She was on the island since the colony began, so while she was alive at the time, she heard about them first in the newspapers. "While I may not look it, I'm actually quite old."

Having decided the plan for their lessons, Mallory felt unsure of how to continue, instead, she decided to just make conversation with the boy. "Other than the history and the lack of a veil, How is our world different?" Speech

"I guessed," Jude admitted. "I mean, you... you're obviously not, uh, thirteen. I don't think the school would allow someone so young to teach, and you look a little bit off from normal human off close."

At a distance they could definitely pass, but not up close.

"Well, the big thing is... the advent of powers, I guess? Maybe one in fifty has some kind of power thing going on, and maybe one in five hundred has something really good. It's nothing like Manta Carlos, but compared to the narrow reality? It's a big difference. And it's all out in the open, so there's this huge culture of... heroes and villains, and people using their powers like that. You had superheroes, like you guys have in comics, only we didn't have your, uh, Marvel and DC and all that. Instead we had really dramatized version of real heroes. Truth is stranger than fiction and all that."

She laughed. "It's always an awkward moment when I meet someone new or teach a class for the first time." Mallory lifted up her hand, exposing part of her forearm. "Its not as obvious at night, so most of my experiences occur then."

Mallory hadn't seen many Superhero movies apart from the Iron man back in 2008, but she could imagine what he meant. "Yeah, I guess it would be stranger."

That made sense. She probably was primarily nocturnal, and Jude considered that for a moment.

"Sorry, can I... Can I ask some questions about... vampire stuff? I don't think Iv'e really met a vampire. You are a vampire, right?" He thought so. It kind of made sense. But she might just have been a demon, in which case he was going to feel really stupid.

"Yeah, sure, you can ask me anything." Mallory nodded. There was nothing wrong with her clearing a few things up for him.

Sitting on her desk with her feet hanging off, she leant back so she was more comfortable. "Was there anything in particular you were wondering about?"

Oh boy. She'd made a mistake. Because now that Jude had permission--very explicit you can ask me anything style permission--he wasn't going to waste it. And he had a lot of questions.

"Is there any major difference between vampires who feed on blood, and those that feed on other things like emotions or energy? Can you do that hibernation thing that vampires do in media where you just sleep for ages? Is it true that age is the best indicator of a vampire's strength?"

Okay, maybe it was time to cut himself off.
