Hiraeth (pronounced hear-eyeth) is a sword given to Ceidwen by her father before she was married off. Ceidwen has affectionately branded Hiraeth a girl. She is made of unknown metal and enchanted with Faerie magic, which has given the sword a sort of personality.
Hiraeth is only somewhat sentient, with the ability to form biases or have loose opinions on people she likes or dislikes, but not to speak or have actual relationships. This is a weapon born through Fae magic, and she is as finicky and easily offended as many of the Unseelie court.
She does have an alignment and tends to act on her own when no one is looking. Like the Unseelie court, Hiraeth's alignment is on the darker side. She is vengeful and, once wielded, longs for the taste of blood.
Of all the magic in Hiraeth, by far the most interesting is her ability to switch her form. She can take on any weaponry she chooses, though not a gun or anything that must be thrown or fired. She refuses. Generally speaking, she is worn on the wrist as a thick bracelet. Theoretically, she could be a necklace, but again Hiraeth demands to be close to her wielders hand. It is said that she takes the form of whatever someone needs most. That's mostly right unless she's feeling prickly.
Notably, Ceidwen is most proficient in using Hiraeth as a sword or a staff. Everything else is rudimentary at best.
Hiraeth's other ability is much less flashy than the previous. She has the tendency to show up around the people she likes. That is as simple as it sounds. You will never see her move, but you may find yourself tripping over a staff or find a sword in your bed. Sometimes, she can be called, but it's a hit or miss whether she will answer and generally determined by urgency and how much she is drawn to a person.
Hiraeth has been described as picky and stubborn. She is a sword that must pick her owner and not the other way around. If someone attempts to use her when she doesn't deem them worthy, she will not work or will purposefully mess up. At times, in less lethal situations, Hiraeth has a tendency to be mischievous by refusing to turn into whichever weapon is requested of her, or by disappearing altogether and not coming when beckoned.
Other people can use Hiraeth, and she can be drawn to them, but for now, she has settled on staying with Ceidwen and every once in awhile, she will appear near Ravina, Ceidwen's daughter.
