Maddie was having a rough couple days. It was bad enough that she had been disowned by her parents - but the dingleberry atop this shit sundae was that she couldn't do well enough on the academy's placement tests. That meant she would probably have to retake 9th grade. She felt like a moron. Even though it wasn't her fault, they told her. Her home town's high school hadn't done enough for her, they said.
But there was still hope. Starlight Academy's school year didn't end for another few months. If she took remedial classes and spent time with tutors and books, it was possible that she could be a high school sophomore in a few months. The school put her in touch with a guy called "Callum." He was a year older than her, and some kind of peer tutor. Maddie and Callum talked a little bit through emails, and decided to meet for tutoring outside, in the courtyard. He described a tree where they would meet.
Madeline got to the courtyard at the right time, but she was having trouble finding where she was supposed to be. Eventually, she called out for him: "Hey, Callum! Where are you?"
