Having another sleepless night

Valaina sat irritatingly in a chair as she flipped through the channels on the TV. The clock on the table next to her read 4:17 am. She didn't understand why she couldn't sleep at night. She thought it may have something to do with her power, but she couldn't be sure.

There was nothing on TV. It had to be her fifth time going through the channels. What would be on TV at this time in the morning anyway? She hated not being able to sleep. Mostly because there was no one around.

She gave up trying to find something interesting on the TV, and she settled with the weather channel. It wouldn't hurt to find out if they were predicting snow anytime soon.

Jason pushed into the lounge and scanned the room hastily.
He glared as he saw a girl watching t.v. But decided to ignore her. Making his way to one of the dark corners of the grabbed a book from a table he passed and sat in a chair.
He put his feet up on a table in front of him, an glared down at the cover of the book.

Finally someone to talk to!, Valaina thought to herself. She didn't, however, miss the look he had gave her when he walked in. Maybe he doesn't want to talk?.
She decided to go for it. She was so incredibly bored, she had to talk to someone. She noticed he was holding a book in his hands.

"What book are you reading?" she asked casually.

'I don't know.' Jason said without looking up.' I haven't read the title yet.
He flipped the book to the title page and read. An anthology of great artists through the centuries.
'Oh, goody. My favorite.' He said bitterly.

Valaina laughed, "I guess it doesn't sound to interesting?" she grabbed the remote and pressed 'mute'.
"So, why are you awake so early in the morning? Or so late at night, whichever." she shifted in her chair. Now that she had someone to talk to, she had a burst of energy and couldn't sit still.

Throwing the book on the groound he said, 'No reason. Didn't feel like sleeping.'
He leaned back in the chair and stared at the ceiling. 'I just got back actually, from being out side, I thought I might go to bed. But then I remembered that I hated my room mate's guts.'

"You hate your roommate's guts?" Valaina replied, a little surprised. "Well, why do you room with him? Why don't you find another roommate?"
Her mouth was getting dry so she stood up and crossed the room to the water cooler, grabbed a paper cup from the cabinet and filled it right to the top.

'It doesn't matter really. It's not like I sleep much. Besides, when I do. Well, this chair is pretty confortable.'
He gave a small smile. But it was more to himself then her. Looking at the table next to him he searched for a better book to read.

"I can't believe it! You actually would prefer to sleep in here, than to find another roommate so you can sleep in an actual bed?" She shook her head and smiled, "Wow."

"I'm Valaina, by the way. What's your name?"

'Jason.' He said still looking through the books. 'We're not usually in there at the same time anyway.' He yawned. 'Besides, I can't think of anyone else who would want to room with me either. I'd probably hate their guts too.'
