I think I'm having a panic attack or something

This is Chloe by the way. I don't remember if I got a new phone number or what but I don't remember having this phone

I'm forgetting a lot of stuff and I have toskada and I'm scared I'm going to forget my own daughter

I don't even know if you ever heard about her. She's so precious and she doesn't deserve any of this

I locked myself in my room and I've been crying nonstop7 I might as well be dying

I started texting you thinking you might be able to help me somehow but I might be beyond help

  • No one is beyond help, Chloe.
  • Memory issues are always upsetting, and they're often scary. Being sick at the same time only makes things worse.
  • Are you in quarantine currently? Is your daughter with you?

I'm not going to quarantine. Amber is with me

Our worst case scenario backup plan can't happen in quarantine. Doctors wouldn't like us opening a portal to hell.

We're at home and have people who can't get sick taking care of us but that won't fix my memory

  • I understand.
  • Not everyone is comfortable with quarantine. I'm currently assisting those inside it, and since I'm sick myself, I won't be able to leave until quarantine breaks.
  • Writing things down will help with memory loss. Write notes to yourself of important details will help maintain a sense of continuity.
  • Would you prefer a phone call, or does text work for you? Whatever you're comfortable with, Chloe. I'm sorry I can't be there with you now.

I guess a phone call could work

I already started taking notes

I hope you're doing ok in quarantine

They say some of the Toskada people are getting violent and they have what I have so there's another thing I have to worry about happening to me

  • It seems to be based on personality.
  • You were never a violent person in my experience, so the chance of you becoming violent seems low.
  • Quarantine is just fine, although a lot of people are upset.
  • Are you free now? You can call me if so.

Chloe spent a few minutes trying to calm herself before she called Valli. It wouldn't make sense to call someone while sobbing this much.

Deep breaths. A glass of water.

Valli's phone rang.

"Hey Valli." Her illusion of calm was already breaking. Her breath shook, her voice cracked. "Sorry to bother you while you're sick. I probably shouldn't have."

Another deep breath filled the speaker on Valli's phone.

Valli was already ready for the phonecall when it rang, settled down in a chair and alone in his room.

"I'm sick," Valli said simply, "but it isn't serious. My symptoms are mild, and I mostly came to quarantine so that I'd be available for those who needed it."

People like Chloe, only she wasn't actually there, unfortunately. He didn't really like doing sessions over the phone--it missed a lot of key body language--but he could manage.

"You don't need to worry about bothering me, especially when you're upset."

"Thanks."

She didn't say anything for a few seconds. Then:

"This is kind of like - like dying in a way, isn't it? I'm going to forget who Amber is. I'm going to forget my whole life here. I've already heard about what happened to Malara Tor. She's," Chloe sobbed, "She's a wreck, now. She doesn't know who I am, she doesn't know who her daughter is. Dalia basically, she, she lost her mother."

She was crying openly now. Curled up in a ball in the corner of her walk-in closet, door locked, door to her room locked.

"I don't want to do that to Amber," She said between the sobs. "She doesn't deserve that."

It was like dying. Valli frowned, relieved for a moment that he could. No one would see him. Chloe wouldn't see his reactions, only hear his voice and his words. He would have to be careful.

"Death is important," Valli said carefully, "because it's final. It might feel like death, but it isn't, because you will come back from this. Even if you forget, that doesn't mean you're dead, and it doesn't mean the memories are gone for good. It will all have still happened."

He'd always found that it was important to reinforce that. The fact that even if someone didn't remember, it still happened. It was still real.

"You should tell her, when you see her, that it's temporary. That the storm will pass. But no matter how you feel or what you remember, you will still love her, because she is still your daughter."

Positive reinforcement was important--not just for Chloe, but for her faceless daughter that Valli hadn't even heard of. How did she have a daughter old enough to understand what was going on, but Valli hadn't even heard of it? Was he that out of touch? And Chloe was so young at that...
