Shay had taken Ossa out along with Rufus. Both were new cousins she hadn't known about before, so it was an excellent bonding experience. Ossa was a half reaper, just like Shay. And Rufus a pride Demon who the girl felt particularly fond of.

Winter meant not ice cream breaks, so they went to the mall for hot chocolate and minor present shopping. Talked, ate at the food court, and did whatever came to mind. Rufus didn't seem to care much, and Ossa was shy, so that left Shay leading them most of the day.

Their fun adventure was coming to a close, however, and Shay was walking with Rufus to take Ossa home, enjoying the cold and the Christmas decorations that lit up the streets. It was only five PM, but the sun had already set, and darkness overtook the street. It was the curse (or beauty) of winter.

Shay didn't expect trouble, but that was silly of her. Trouble followed her and even on a day when things seemed almost perfect, it was bound to rear its ugly head.

"Hope you had fun," she said to both Rufus and Ossa. "It's hard to pick something we'd all enjoy doing, I think. Mall seemed like a good idea. It was busy. Sorry about that."

Ossa liked her new cousin. Shay was really pretty and really tall and really brave. Braver than Dalia, which meant she was probably really really strong too! Shay was a half reaper too, and that made Shay extra extra cool. She didn’t think Rufus was one of her relatives, but Shay liked him, so he must be okay, right? He was even taller than Shay, and very very scary. Ossa spent the entire time on the other side of Shay from Rufus, so she didn’t know much about him other than that he wasn’t dead.

The mall was really pretty, with all the sparkling lights and moving pictures, and all the pretty things in the windows. Some of the stores were really strange though. Everything looked stranger without mama. Ossa always spoke in a hushed whisper, tiny eyes the only thing visible from the outside of her blanket.
