Name: Hanoko
Age: somewhere north of 10, apparent age, 16
Birthday: none
Gender: male
Species: Kodama
Category: Student
Class: High School
Grade: 10

Appearance Description: Hanoko looks as much like a tree as he does a human. His skin is tanned and looks rough, like tree bark, but feels as soft as a normal human. His hair reflects the leaves of his tree, falling down to his shoulders in a mess of green, occasionally growing a leaf from a strand of hair. He stands at about 6 feet tall, but the mild bookish look he used to have was replaced by an abundance of life. No longer trying to impress his lost love, Hanoko's face has become more androgynous, neither man nor woman to replicate more truly the nature of his tree. He has the appearance of defined muscle, however he has no muscle or flesh to explain this. Hanoko is near-sighted and requires glasses, but rarely wears them.

Personality Description:Hanoko is naturally, very quiet, the idea of using air to talk still a rather odd feeling. He is patient and calm, with an aura of life and vitality. He has confidence to spare, but has grown up enough in the past year to know that he doesn't need to prove himself to anyone. He regrets not trying harder in the past to focus on the human element of things, and is content with observing as much as he can, learning as much as possible. Hanoko is attentive, and an avid listener, quick to learn but not as fast at putting it in practice.

Active Abilities: As a demon born from a tree, Hanoko can fuse himself with the tree he was born in and any tree of the same type provided that it is not also inhabited. From within the tree he can sense anything his roots or leaves touch, or cast off any physical form to travel as a glowing blue light.

Passive Abilities: As a tree, Hanoko uses photosynthesis for energy, whether he is in an actual tree or not. He only needs to drink water in his humanoid form, and breathes in carbon dioxide using respiration much like humans do. While only his hair will absorb the sunlight needed, his ‘lungs’ create the sugars needed to supplement the lack of energy.

Hanoko's body is made of plant fibers, replicating the 'squishiness' of a human body with different materials. Where one might assume there were bones, instead he has wood fibers twisted in a spiral to create a shape very similar. Unlike human bones which have a hollow inside to allow for the creation of marrow, the bones are solid material, and less likely to break. The rest of him is made of softer wood fiber, riddled through with Xylem acting as both a nervous system and the circulatory system. The fibers, while not quite the same texture as human skin, serve the same function and can still be cut or scraped, though they do not 'bleed' quite the same - in place of blood, Hanoko exudes saps.

He is still connected to the forest even without roots to reach the Mycorrhizal network of Manta Carlos Island’s trees, and one can hear a soft whispering like voices on the wind when standing close to Hanoko, though the words are hushed and hard to make out. While Hanoko is not able to communicate with other trees in his human form, he can still sense when they wish to speak to him. Most typically, the chatter will mention weather or danger from pests than anything directly useful to his excursions into the human world.

Weaknesses:Vulnerability to fire increases if he doesn’t get enough water, making his skin more rough and bark-like when dehydrated.

Without his glasses, which he rarely uses, Hanoko has trouble seeing things far away. Nearsightedness is not a very large inconvenience for him, and he does keep his glasses nearby even though he doesn't like using them.

Common Magical Items: none

Biography: Hanoko was ‘born’ in an oak tree on Manta Carlos. About 10 years later he fell in love with a girl, choosing to leave the tree and attend school with her so he could get the chance to profess his love. After a short time of staying by her side, the girl returned to her home in another world, leaving Hanoko alone and heartbroken. He returned to his tree and began to wither. Exhausted already with his moping, the other Kodama pushed for Hanoko to move on, becoming their envoy to the people of Manta Carlos. He returned to the school in a new year, this time in supplemental classes focusing on culture.

Resources: Hanoko is mostly taken care of by the school, but does not need much looking after as he lives off campus within the tree he was born in. Hanoko is a deciduous tree, and is given special permission to miss classes during colder months when his tree goes into dormancy.
