Rory was curious by the idea of the Demonic Student Union. No doubting that. As a devout Roman Catholic, the idea of a support group for Demons was too surreal. She couldn't say she felt hostile toward the Demonic members of society here, but then, she hadn't really taken it in, either. There were so many crazy things here that Rory couldn't actually comprehend any of them clearly.

Cool. Dragons. Cool. Demons. Cool. Werewolves. Cool. Cool. Cool. But none of that meant anything. She might have as well been in a damn dream.

The last DSU meeting of the school year. Chloe brought her usual infamous plate of chocolate chip cookies, which had one oatmeal raisin mixed into it, but this time nobody seemed to get that one. At least they didn't complain about it if they did. The club spent most of their time talking about some demonstrations and other plans for the summer break. They took a moment to recognize a pair of graduating college seniors, and some of the drinking-age demons were going out to give them a proper sendoff.

Madeline felt awkward the whole time. She wanted to approach one of the other demons, because this was one of her last chances before the break to get someone to talk to about her... darker nature? Was that even an okay way to say it? She wanted to talk to someone, but the support group sounded too intense and intimidating for her, from what she'd heard.

Everyone was filing out, now, and she still didn't know how to ask for the help she wanted. And hey, she noticed Rory was here, that seemed kinda weird. Time to investigate.

"Hey Rory," She said. "Didn't think I'd see you here. What's up?" Madeline seemed upbeat.

Rory jumped a little when she was approached and spoken to. She hadn't thought about the possibility that she'd be spoken to, or even that anyone would recognize her. Which was silly, but it was where she was anyway.

"Oh, Hey Maddie. I guess I figured I'd check out the Demonic Student Union. Try and get used to it all, try and, uh, understand where you guys come from."

It felt odd to say. Rory rubbed the back of her neck. "It's still surreal to be talking to Demons when I was a devout Roman Catholic." She chuckled. "I keep hearing my mothers voice yelling at me."

"Right? I grew up in a Christian family too," she said. "My... stepdad thought demons turned people into gay liberals or something. So I was raised to think they were evil enemies of God, and now suddenly I am one."

There were a lot of things she could say about this reversal. The fears, the anguish at the idea that God actually hated her for what she was. The best thing she could think to say about it now was: "I just hope I don't accidentally turn my boyfriend gay somehow. That would suck."

Rory burst out laughing at that last comment. She wondered if Maddie was like her, the type of person who made inappropriate comments when nervous.

"Shit, I doubt that. That's crazy, though. I never talked much about religion with my mom but I went to confession at least once every two weeks with my little brother. We'd go before Easter on Saturday night, too. Every Sunday."

She flinched. "Anyway, it was cool listening to everyone, uh, talk."

Madeline nodded, realizing she didn't actually know very much about Catholicism other than how it was a kind of Christianity. She had no clue what confession even was, and she was honestly a little afraid to ask. Thankfully the conversation moved away from religion again

"Yeah. It's... nice that they're doing that activisty stuff too, I guess. I mean, I heard some things got better for demons because of it. So, yeah."

She took a deep breath.

"I still can't get over how normal it all feels, though. Aside from that couple of lust demons who were being really obvious about hitting on people today, but I don't think they're usually here for these. I mean just... the people here act like, just, people? If that makes sense?"

It almost defied belief.

Rory nodded slowly. It did make sense, but it felt like it shouldn't have. Rory pulled from those lessons back from home. It was easier comparing it to villains and heroes than it was to religion. So she didn't.

"It's a little surreal, sure, but... I mean back home we had heroes and villains but not all villains were bad and not all heroes were good, you know? Those titles, they were just words. They made it easier for people to disassociate from each other because that was less messy than admitting you felt a kinship with your enemy or someone you perceived as your enemy."

She laughed. "Sorry, I get a little passionate about it. People tell me I can come off too intense."

Huh. She could only imagine how weird that would be, hanging out with a comic book style supervillain and learning they weren't so bad after all.

"No problem," she said. "It's kinda interesting. And - do you think I'd hang out here if I didn't like people getting intense? Like with all the demonstrations and stuff they're doing, planning to get in all the new kids' faces?"

She shrugged.

"But yeah. This is probably kinda like that. With angels and demons being like the heroes and villains."

"Y-Yeah," Rory said as she looked around. She'd never really, officially met Chloe Black, but she'd heard about her and the things she did. It was a very in-your-face sort of club, wasn't it?

Rory hadn't liked to think about it like that. Good guys and bad guys. Angels and Demons. Not thinking about it like that made it easier for her to come here and listen or watch or talk.

"That makes sense. The only difference is none of you got to choose to be those things. Which, I guess, makes all the difference."

Rory looked at her feet and smiled wanly. "If you're going to vilify something, do it about people who made the choice to do something shitty."

Madeline nodded. "You're preaching to the choir, there." And then she smirked at her own bad choice of words.

"So, uh. Heard you and the others have a legal guardian outside the school now. How's that gone so far?"

Madeline was considering trying to get matched up with one, but she didn't know if she liked the idea. She had a lot more freedom with less direct supervision.

But Rory's situation was pretty weird, compared to what Madeline might get. Like, it was probably really weird for Rory that her new not-dad was a clone of her probably-ex-boyfriend, or whatever Jude was to her.
