There was a lot of water.
That was the only thing Eroshay could comprehend. The rest, everything else she did was pure instinct, and she followed it without hesitation because it was the thing that would keep her alive. All the fear burning in her gut was the energy she needed in this terrible situation.
She had crawled as high as she could up a building, a home, and placed her back against the chimney, tucking her head low to her knees. To Shay, things were both very quick and very sluggish. Her mind moved a mile a second, but the world around her, she saw that in slow-motion. And all she witnessed was destruction.
Not many things made Shay want to cry, but this did. Everything she had known and grown up around felt snatched away within seconds. And she could hear the whispers of the dead screaming in her ears in their horror. Ero held her head tighter and let her tears roll down her cheeks. She didn't bother to hide them from people who wouldn't be around.
She stayed like that until things died down. How fast did a tsunami move? Was it hours? Seconds? It couldn't have been days, Shay would have realized that. But soon, the only sound left was her crying. She hadn't even realized how hard she'd been sobbing. Maybe it was just the only sound she could hear because Shay was certain there had to be other noises around her.
She didn't look up and she didn't plan to.
