Shay looked down at the water and made a face. She hated murky water (who liked it, anyway?). She didn't like the idea of anything being around her that she couldn't see. She didn't bring it up to him. It sounded childish, even in her head. No need to be afraid, Shay. You're almost home free.

The girl gave a beatific smile on hearing about his mortality. She liked his answer. He wasn't immortal, but he seemed calm and fearless. It made her feel better about being human. He, in general, was making Shay feel better.

Maybe it was the situation, her earlier fear and the euphoria she was getting from coming off it, but Shay was in a state of bliss. She slipped her right hand further into her sleeve and reached forward to take hold of his hand when hers was safely tucked away. Even in this state of mind, Shay felt a little odd touching someone, but it did make her feel secure.

"What kind of messy business?" Shay asked, curious. All her earlier mistrust depleted. "I'm Eroshay, by the way, but you can just call me Shay."

The twelve-year-old was looking all around at everything. She hadn't paid attention after the wave hit, but it looked bad. Terrible. Her heart squeezed, her grip on his hand mimicking it.

He took her hand carefully, making sure he didn't hit any skin. If it was going to make her see bad things, then so be it - he wasn't going to make her see anything bad. He started off back the way he'd come, going slowly, testing his footing, and being careful to avoid any obvious debris. There were a lot of ruined cars left over - ones that were never going to run again because of the water damage, even if most of them hadn't been damaged that badly by the wave.

"Well, adult messy business." He answered, before realizing that sounded like a very different kind of messy business from what he'd intended. "The violent kind. Like, gangs and stuff." He didn't exactly want to get into details with a twelve year old, which meant a lot of summarizing that he wasn't terribly fond of. He wouldn't have described himself as a gangster, but that was effectively what he'd just done.

"And I'm Angelo. Or Officer Genovese, whichever one you want." Some kids seemed to like first names, and some wanted to sound all formal and call him by his full title. He always ended up leaving it up to them, even if policy meant he probably should have stuck with 'Officer Genovese'.

Shay tried hard not to giggle when he said adult business and proceeded to explain he meant violent adult business. Had he thought she would believe he meant sex? Well now she was thinking about it, but mostly, it served to confuse Shay, so she moved on when she heard his name.

The girl sounded it out, tasting both his first and surname to see which she liked better. "Gen O Ve se. I think I read that name in a book once." Shay knew she had. And she remembered which book, too, but it was her subtle way to ask whether he was a mobster. As adult as Shay was, the idea of meeting some infamous gangster was fascinating. It made her want to ask a thousand questions she was sure she wasn't supposed to ask. Or, as a little girl, even know.

She wasn't sure how common the last name that was among Italians, but that would have been a convenient coincidence.

To Shay, calling him Angelo or Officer Genovese didn't appeal to her. His first name was too intimate and calling him by his title was too formal. So she mixed the two for now. "You seem too nice to be a gangster." She was dropping her subtlety here.

Angelo hadn't been around enough kids to tell if she was extra perceptive for her age, or if he was just extra obvious. He wasn't very good at hiding things like that. If he was trying, sure, he could hide specific things, but in general? Not great.

"You probably did, if you read a lot of adult books." Hell, the name had it's own damn wikipedia page, full of sordid details he wasn't fond of. "It's an Italian name." He clarified, unsure of where she came from. For all he knew she could be an island native, and the few natives he'd met seemed pretty ignorant about the rest of the world.

"And... sort of. I was a member of the mafia, which is sort of like a gang, but not really. It's not quite as bad." In his (extremely biased) opinion anyway. "And it was how I was raised. Growing up, I just was, the same way you probably haven't given much thought to the fact that you breath air. I didn't really think about it until I got a chance to come to the island." A fresh start, in other words. He was trying to be careful about making himself sound better or worse than he was... and... ah, shit. What happened to her parents? Did she even have parents? He chewed on his lip, unsure of if he wanted to ask.

Shay appreciated his honesty and it furthered her giddy behavior. There was a way about this man that had her letting down her guard. She should have been more perturbed than she was. "I do read a lot of adult books." Then she watched him as he explained about mafias and her smile only grew.

"That's because most American-Italian mafias have their ten commandments, while gangs don't, so the mafia is more dangerous but gangs are more unpredictable," Shay said with a good-natured nod. "I never thought I'd meet one because we don't have mafias on the island. I think the closest we have is Rosales' people, and I've never met any of them either." Shay slowed.

She was giving so much away, acting like a child. How long had it been since she'd felt so open? Longer than six years. It was nice. "What is New York like? Is it as busy as the books say? I've never been off Manta Carlos, but I've read a lot about other places. Is the snow there nice? What made you come here? Why are you a cop?" Her eyes widened some. Was he a dirty cop? She decided it was better not to ask that question.

Angelo couldn't help but squint at her. How the hell did someone who was twelve know that sort of thing? That was exactly the kind of thing that kids should not know. Kids were supposed to be innocent and ignorant, not at all like him.

"Close." He admitted. "Ten commandments were Cosa Nostra, which is the Sicilian Mafia. I was part of the five families, which had a similar thing, but not quite." A similar thing which the public didn't know, either. That said, the rules were pretty much the same.

Of course, she then proceeded to bury him in so many questions that he couldn't help but laugh. She was curious - at least that was how a kid should act.

"Don't get the wrong idea - the Mafia are still bad people. We were just less bad than the other bad people. The Island doesn't really have a mafia equivalent, because a big part of organized crime families is that they've been around so long they're part of the local culture." If you hadn't been around at least twenty years, you were just an upstart.

"New Yorks nice. Busier than here, a lot sketchier in places. More varied. You've got poor people and super rich people and they don't live side by side like they do here. Snow's great. Came here because I got the option, and it was a chance to start fresh. They always knew I was weird, didn't know what kind of weird till I got the invite." The more he talked about New York, the heavier his accent got. "Seemed appropriate to help people, considering how I grew up. Plus, it helps that I know how the whole crime thing works. Makes it easier for me to deal with criminals." Because he'd been one, in other words.

Shay's mouth popped into a little 'o'. She hadn't known the American-Italian Mafia didn't follow the Cosa Nostra. When Angelo laughed, Shay was only encouraged to ask more things, to find out all she could. She was interested in his life outside Manta Carlos. Was the real world less dangerous? Because it didn't have magic?

"When you're talking about multiple organizations, do you just say the Mafia or Mafias? Or is it just the Mob? But that implies one, and there are more than one." Her nose scrunched up as she thought. "I guess that means Rosales' couldn't be like the mob, then, I don't think. Maybe they're more like a gang? You'd think the police would be able to catch Klaus, with how small this place is."

The water was lower here, and they were nearly out of it, but Shay didn't realize. She was still too busy mulling over everything Angelo said as if he were some superstar. How very like her age, to be so impressed by the seedy side of the world, constantly romanticizing it. Of course, Shay knew all about death and torture, but even with that knowledge, she couldn't help her romanticized views.

"Does that mean you turned rat? Or something? I thought you weren't allowed to join the police otherwise they'd kill you?" Of course, Shay was also sure asking about the interworkings of the Mafia was a good way to get killed too, but for some reason, she wasn't nervous about it.

Ahh, she had so many questions. So much for trying to dumb it down - she'd obviously read about things, and he wasn't going to try and lie to her to sneak around the truth. Everything he was saying could be found in books or online if she thought to look.

Or at least most of it could.

"I'm talking organized crime in general. Yakuza, triad, all that. Proper organized crime, not just petty street gangs." He hadn't really dealt with either, but he'd heard enough to know which he preferred.

"And you shouldn't hang out with Rosales, if you have been." She might have been. He seemed the kind to hang around corrupting young kids. "It's not a matter of catching him, because we know where he lives - it's a matter of having enough evidence to prove he'd involved." Which was a much, much messier prospect. "And yeah, he'd be a gang leader, if anything." Although Angelo personally classed him as a 'shit disturber'.

"I'd have been a rat if I'd joined the NYPD, but I didn't. I came here with the family's blessing, because they knew I'd end up in prison if I stayed. Was a bit too nice for the business, and it was a fresh start. Didn't inform on them either, not that Manta Carlos cares, so it doesn't really count." He hadn't said a word of confidential information to anything - just stuff they'd have already known anyway. The family had a goddamn wikipedia page.

"Nope," Shay said, popping her 'p', "I've never met him. I thought he was a wanted man? Which meant you had all the evidence." She thought on it, but what Angelo said made more sense. It would be easy to catch someone after you had everything in order. "Or you want something on him. That makes more sense. How come you guys can't prove he did anything bad? Everyone knows he's a criminal." She was sure he'd have to leave something behind. Everyone makes mistakes, right? Then she was back to grinning.

Now, she was thinking about all the things he must have seen as a cop. "Have you ever had to use your gun? As a cop I mean. Also, are you married? Do you have kids? How long ago did you come here? Where your other mob friends nice or did they like hurting people? Were you in a high position?"

She was talking more than she had in a long time, but this felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity. Of course, now she knew Angelo lived here and where he worked, so she could visit him.

Ahhh, things were getting complex, weren't they?

"Well, there's a difference between the court of public opinion, and the actual court. Like, everyone might know someone's real nice, but can you prove someone's nice? Same thing works in reverse. Even if everyone thinks he's a scum sucking low life, it's hard to prove things like that. We'd either need evidence he was involved in some kind of crime, or need someone believable to be willing to testify - to tell the court - what they saw him do." And good luck finding someone willing to rat.

"Yes, but I didn't kill anyone - non-fatal shots only, to keep someone from shooting at me and my partner. Nope, nope, almost ten years, and I was a close friend of the Don's son, but I didn't have much of a rank otherwise. No one was answering to me or anything." He'd never gained much rank - he was too young for that. No one was going to listen to a snot nosed seventeen year old telling them how to run a business they'd been running longer than he'd been born. "Did I miss any questions?" He couldn't help it - he was kind of amused by the rapidfire volley of questions.
