Hugh had never met a human before. That was, of course, what they'd told him: that he'd be meeting a human, and that the human would take him home.

Home, of course, was a nebulous concept. He remembered very little of the place that he'd been told was his home, little more than a few flashes. Fields. Certain smells. Things that brought him back to a place he no longer remembered.

And now he was going home.

He didn't really know how he felt about that.

Hugh sat alone in a small room, just off the side of the zoo. The facility was downsizing, and the increased political pressure meant they no longer wanted to keep such a large exhibit for a single occupant. Especially not a single occupant who many argued was sapient. So they'd hired someone to bring him back and return him home, and paid very little attention to the details.

They also hadn't told him anything. He had gathered his things up, been dropped in the room, and been told to wait. Someone else had come by later and told him he was being sent home. It had taken him almost ten minutes to understand what they meant by home, and even that still hadn't quite settled.

Well this was certainly some job they were taking. Transport a human back to their home planet because some sketchy morons assumed they just caught themselves a monkey. In his current skin, Nero could easily pass as one, which probably made speaking with the people paying for this job feel even more awkward. Awkward enough that Nero did make a few attempts to push up their pay. Not to mention, this wasn't some fancy reactor core or something.

Nero also insisted on making it very clear that this was legitimate transportation, and not just some trafficking ring his crew had gotten roped into. That sure seemed like it from the sounds of things. But now it was time to meet the new, likely temporary addition to their little band of mishaps. Xeros had come along, being curious about meeting an actual full human. He figured it'd be fine so long as he didn't gawk at him like the former zoo exhibit he used to be.

"Well, looks like this is the guy. What the frack did these skizzards do to his face?" he squinted at Hugh and let out a sigh. "Eh, guess it don't matter. Howzit? You can call me Nero, this is my associate Xeros, seems like you'll be part of our crew till we can get ya back home."

A human, a full human, that was something that had piqued his interest indeed, he did hide his interest decently well. Plus getting the chance to visit his mother's home planet, it was going to be an incredible experience.

So he'd accompany the captain, between his tail wrapped around his waist, his digitigrade legs and other inhuman features, Hugh wouldn't even realize he was part human.

"Angered the wrong guy did we?" he'd say, his nose twitching as it took in the man's scent. "Like the captain said, we'll be hauling you home, do behave until then." He held a certain amount of sympathy towards the human, something that was relatively rare.

A Cremalian. It was the first time Hugh had ever seen one, or-

Or he guessed it wasn't. But it felt like the first time he'd ever seen one, and that was very much the mindset he was in as he looked up at the two entering the room. A Cremalian and a... a thing. He'd seen something like them before, but it wasn't as if he knew the names of any species. They'd given him a little earpiece to help him understand, but even so, the words being said didn't quite make sense the way they should have.

"It was a beast," Hugh said. He didn't know the name of it, but then he didn't know the names of a lot of things. Oblivious to their true natures, his eyes slid straight across Xeros, resting on Nero instead.

"You are a Crem - a human?"

A human, he reminded himself. A human was the species. Cremalia was just the planet name, but there were humans on other planets now.

"Not even a smidge close. I just wear this so that I don't scare children." Nero answered without actually answering the question. He was pretty sure he'd only shown Azlin his actual self up close. Others might know what he was, but it wasn't something he tended to break out to often.

"I wasn't even born on this rock. Actually I've never even been to this planet. Xeros here is half human or something, should've seen how excited he was to meet a full human," he said smiling smugly.

Xeros would snort, finding it mildly amusing that Hugh mistook Nero as a human. "I'm not what you expected from a human?" he'd ask the hughman, jokingly, "what? Does the tail throw you off?" He hadn't expected him to realize he was half human, he didn't look it beyond being humanoid.

"How long has it been since you saw another human?" he'd scratch at his cheek, "eh, either way, you'll see plenty soon enough." As would he it seems, seeing his mother's home world was going to be interesting.

He... didn't get it. How could he? He was missing so much key, important context that he couldn't begin to guess what Nero actually was, the same way that he simply didn't get Xeros... at all.

He turned his attention to the catman, his eyes roaming up and down, and then muttered a very quiet "...oh."

Because what else could be say? He didn't look human. He had a general idea of what humans were supposed to look like from a few illustrations in books, but it wasn't as if books specified how human legs were supposed to work.

"A long time," he answered. "...You are taking me home?"

"Xeros, taunting a man who's spent a good chunk of his life in a cage over things he's had no means of gaining much knowledge about the greater universe is one thing. When that man is going to be sharing living space with you for the foreseeable future, I don't recommend it," Nero said growing a tinge annoyed at Xeros's poking at the man.

"But yes, we're taking you back home. From here on out you're effectively a free man."

Xeros would snort would Nero recommend he stop. "Yeah yeah, we'll be taking you to Earth," a trip that was going to be an interesting for the half human. "Ship's ready and waiting," quite literally in their case, "you'll even get you're own room."

The half alien was ready to go, he'd satisfied his curiosity in regards to the human, he was ready to go.

His own room. His freedom. There were a lot of very vague and at best nebulous concepts being bandied around, and Hugh was having a hard time keeping up. He probably looked particularly stupid as he glanced between the two of them, trying to follow along with what was happening.

"So you a... you are not a human," he said to Nero, "but you look like one. You are a human?" He turned his attention fully to Xeros. He didn't look like a human, but it wasn't as if that meant much. Humans, he'd come to realize, could look like almost anything. There was so much variety!
