Name: Gin Fong
Age: 54
Birthday: June 5th
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Category: Citizen
Career: Early Retiree
Nickname: Gin Tonic or Gin & Tonic
Appearance Description: Gin is a fairly slender man who looks his age in both hair color and wrinkles, with medium-length, peppery locks and a face that has been marked by many laughs and brow furrows throughout his lifetime. Although he sometimes maintains facial hair, he does so more out of laziness than any desire for the aesthetic. His eyes are brown, but his purple soft contacts give off a sense of mysteriousness that fit the town.
He generally wears long-sleeved shirts and slacks, although the old prankster also enjoys wearing overly edgy-looking coats whenever he's in an area with youths that would do so, just to mess with them. He also carries around a mundane rarity as a personal defense tool for travels: a fencing saber with a pistol grip, a singularly nonsensical object.
Personality Description: Gin does his best to take the "trolling old man" role to its maximum. He takes even the most serious of matters with as much irreverence as he can muster, and enjoys messing around with anyone that looks remotely busier than he is, which is not hard at all in his retired life.
Freed from any existing obligations and without anyone currently in his life who might mourn him, Gin has a bit of an adventurous streak when it comes to the more dangerous facets of the island. His retirement hobby is essentially expeditions, and he's generally the sort that will try to read the atmosphere and maintain a pleasant mood, though this is usually superseded by his drive to mess with people.
Active Abilities: All of Gin's active abilities fall under the theme of "ignoring causality". Although he has cultivated these abilities ever since he first arrived in Manta Carlos all those years ago, he likes to pretend it's just his old age making the reality around him senile, even though he's only 54.
Temporal Quickdraw. Whenever Gin needs his weapon (or his apartment keys), it was actually in his hand all along. He can only use this ability on objects which he has an established pattern of carrying, such as his saber, his keys, or the aforementioned edgy duster jacket for when he needs to inflict some cringe.
Temporal Anomaly. Gin can make it so that someone else's reality-based or time-based power never affected him even after it clearly did, usually by substituting some random coincidence in established reality. It only works on such cheat-like powers, though; a fireball directed at the old man will crisp him up good in the end.
Tempora. Gin can accelerate the craft/cook time for mundane items to after they're done. As his self-designated ability name implies, he most commonly uses it for fried shrimp, and it was in fact an ability honed solely for culinary convenience that happened to see other uses later on in his life.
Passive Abilities: Though he has some strange time-based active abilities, Gin's passive abilities are extremely mundane. They could only be considered 'abilities' by their unusually refined nature, and there is some degree of mystery as to whether any of them are actually supernatural.
Internal Clock. Gin is uncannily good at knowing exactly what time it is. Being under the effect of a time-based ability does nothing to dampen his judgment of time, but being thrown into a different dimension or something similar does nullify this passive.
Studied Swordsman. Though he is past his prime, Gin is nonetheless an accomplished duelist. Besides his physical capability, he has a passable knowledge of all sport and martial forms of swordfighting, as well as a rudimentary knowledge of metallurgy.
Weaknesses:
Mildly Old. Gin is past middle-aged and also a normal human where it matters. As such, he recovers at a much slower rate from injuries compared to his younger counterparts.
Common Magical Items: None
Biography: Although he now returns to Manta Carlos, Gin was actually a resident much earlier in his life. As a student, he was rather unremarkable. He was discovered to have a talent for time manipulation, but it was of such short range and small effect that by the standards of the others there, he might as well have not had any abilities at all. Nonetheless, he was diligent and future-minded as a child, and so he was by all accounts a decent student and graduated without much incident.
In his early adult years, Gin worked mostly in the hospitality industry, eventually becoming a hotel chef for some time before landing a job as a general manager for a minorly-known but high-class establishment in a busy area. His ascension through hospitality bureaucracy was respectably fast, but not generally due to his powers. In this time, the most he ever did was occasionally speed up the cook time for food to avoid an unhappy table.
Both because of his focus on work and his solitary nature, Gin never had much time or inclination for a relationship, and so remained single throughout his working life. As a result, in his early 40s, the man found himself with a comfortable abundance in savings and no children to dote upon. For a time, he threw himself into various sporting hobbies, mostly revolving around weaponry. Over the course of around a decade, he became reasonably accomplished for someone who entered the game so late in life.
Eventually, Gin decided that the most interesting way to squander his excess would be to mess around in the stock market, and, after doing a decent amount of research, he put whatever he had extra that wasn't part of his emergency or retirement savings into whatever positions amused him at the time. After a few years of minor losses (when compared to inflation), the advent of cryptocurrency had the startling side-effect of causing his computer hardware stock to skyrocket, and so Gin cashed out quickly and declared his impending resignation.
However, being retired didn't automatically give a person an abundance of things to do, merely an abundance of time to do nothing in. At this point, he thought back to Starlight Academy and decided that he might as well settle down in Manta Carlos, where things were at least interesting. He would also take his time experiencing all the little things he'd missed out on by not having enough of a social life in the past, and strike a blow for all those money-scrounging personal finance paranoiacs in the world by enjoying the crap out of his early retirement.
Resources: Gin has extremely comfortable retirement savings, with a small percentage in more aggressive holdings since he's not that old yet.
Additional Information: None in particular.
