It was a normal day. Well, as normal as a cybernetics class could be. A teenager working on robotic limbs wasn't exactly normal, he was the youngest in his class, all the others were in there twenties, some of them resented him being on there level, so he didn't really talk to the others. He just focussed on his work. Currently that was a prosthetic arm.

He had his headphones in, classical music helped him focus. His tools seemed to move in sinch with the music, adjusting the fingers there, losening the elbow joint there, making sure the neural receptor were working. All the usual stuff.

His nose twitched as he picked up a new scent, he looked up for a minute, didn't see anyone and went back to his work.

Melanie couldn't be kept out for long. She was like a little scholarly bandit, going on classes she had no business going to and making off with all their little secrets. It was almost like a ritual of hers, waiting and watching until the perfect time, until she could just sneak in and take all of the wonderful information the other students kept under lock and key.

But the fact of the matter was, she was far too young. Cybernetics were way above her grade level no matter how it was sliced, and beyond that, her powers came from magic, innate skill, and training. Teachers could show her methods but not actual material. She would have to learn her magic on her own. So what was the point even? She was ahead of all of these guys on the learning curve anyways.

At least that's what she thought.

The door opened a little and she squeezed through. Normally, nightmares could become incorporeal and basically do whatever they wanted, but she didn't know how to yet. It was under investigation, though.

Once she was inside, she heard a yelling voice. "What are you doing here, young lady? I thought we made it clear you're too young for this course."

"I'm young, but I'm smart enough to be here! Come on!"

Older students turned to see this girl, barely into her teens, trying to argue with the professor, and laughed. But Melanie was very serious. Cybernetics were crucial to her plans for world dominion.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw the other students turning, he wouldn't have bothered looking up except that new scent got stronger. Taking out his headphones his ears filled with the laughter of his fellow students, he turned to find a girl of maybe 13 arguing with the teacher.

He cocked his head out of curiosity, the others continued to cackle, "ignore them kid, there a bunch of jackasses." They had done the same thing to him, he had told them to piss off. "You can sit by me if you want." The student in front of him started laughing harder, Aedan turned flaring up the glow of his eyes to silence him.

The professor shook his head, Aedan looked to him, "oh come on, some of these guys are ten years older than me but you let me stay." He shook his head again. Aedan mumbled about the hypocrisy of having a school for the gifted yet putting an age limit on certain things.

He turned back the girl sighing, "I'm not much of a teacher kid, but if you need pointers on cybernetics I could help you."

Melanie didn't care about the laughing children. She'd learned a long time ago that if you let them know how their jeering gets to you, then you lose the upper hand. And she be damned if she let anyone take the upper hand from her. She would rather die. Screw that.

She opened her mouth to argue with the teacher again, but was cut off by another student. Just by looking at him, the nightmare could tell that he was much younger than the other people in the class. Immediately, she realized that she could use this camaraderie that he apparently felt for her. Well, that and pity, but at the moment she'll take anything she can get.

Plus, she could just turn both of those feelings to her benefit later.

With a nod, Melanie walked to the chair and took a cybernetics kit out of her backpack. It was a basic one, barely used and decorated with black inky tentacle decals all over it, covering most of the plain white surface.

"Thank you," she said. "My name is Melanie."

"I'm Aedan Drago, call me Aedan." He pulled out his thermos and poured tea for both of them. "There idiots, they did the same thing to me. You'll just have to prove your smarter than them." He passed her a cup. "They'll still complain, but at least you showed them that there idiots."

He took a sip of his tea. "If you have the skills then you should get the lessons, with guidence of course."

He slid the robotic arm in front of her, "we get flawed or damaged parts to work on." He smiles, "let's see what you can do kid."
