Angelo had always had mixed feelings about his species. For one thing, it was a solid, clear sign that his parents--the people who had supposedly brought him into the world--weren't. His father was not his father. His mother had an affair. Whether or not anyone had connected the dots back at home remained to be seen, but Angelo knew, and that was what mattered.

But it had been useful. His powers had saved him time and time again. Being something other than human had saved him from his life, had swooped in and let him come to the island with a fresh start. He owed them a lot, even if sometimes he couldn't quite figure out where the line between him and his powers existed. In a lot of ways, he'd been his powers.

But now he had something else. He had a family. He had kids. He was more than the sum of his parts. He had priorities, and things to do, and if that meant giving up something that had once been an integral part of himself, then so be it.

He'd agreed to meet with Taliesen in, of all possible places for a shady deal, a 24 hour breakfast joint. It wasn't even seven, but Angelo had a very busy day ahead of him, and finding a time when both of them were free had proven difficult. Angelo even got there early, settling into a booth, ordering some waffles, and waiting for the man of the moment to show up.

Taliesen had cleared his schedule for the morning when he got the call from one Angelo Genovese. This was a deal that he couldn't pass up. A pillar of the community, a police officer of ten years. Someone who was respected and trusted. His heart swelled with the potential for people to finally, actually trust in his deals.

Stepping into the breakfast place with Mitch following swiftly behind, Taliesen looked around briefly, his eyes glinting dangerously. There he was. Sliding into the booth, he took off his hat and glasses and sat them on the edge of the table together.

"Good morning, Mr. Genovese. I don't normally agree to meet like this on such short notice, but if I'm being honest I didn't have any meetings today and you sounded like you were in a moderate hurry."

Ordering a black coffee and plucking a single golden thread from his sleeve, he flicked the offending thing away and settled his gloves together on the table. "You're well aware, but my name is Taliesen Diamanti. I represent Facade here on the island. This is my assistant, Mitch. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Taliesen did not look like a good person. He looked shady, like a car salesman. Like he was going to sell you something.

And he was.

But Angelo had been on the island long enough to not judge people too much by their oddities, even if the man's eyeballs were literally diamonds. So he gave Taliesen a polite nod, standing up for a handshake before settling back down in the booth with his coffee and pushing his plate to the side.

"And you," Angelo said. "I'd apologize for the short notice, but I couldn't have done this in advance. I only heard about your more recently, and the idea hadn't occurred to me. But -"

Angelo paused, snorting to himself before continuing. "But I come to you on this, the day of my daughter's wedding, and I have a deal to make."

His terrible reference made, Angelo got down to business.

"My daughter is sick. Something with her powers, or her species, or something is killing her. She's perpetually ill. The odds she'll live past forty are slim. I want to fix that. I want to make her healthy. I want to undo all the terrible side effects of her powers, so that she can sleep through the night without nightmares. So she doesn't have to worry about dying before she gets her first gray hair."

Angelo paused. "And ideally without her immediately noticing."

Taliesen sat quietly, respectfully as Angelo explained his situation. If he understood the reference his client was making with that line, he didn't show it. A father wewanting to save his daughter's life on the day of her wedding. Sweet enough to be the plot of a movie.

When his coffee was brought out and Mitch's pancakes were ordered, he regarded Angelo again with a slight tilt of his head and a smile that would have been pleasant if it weren't for the rows of sharp, obsessively cleaned teeth.
"Oh, Mazel tov! That's a very sweet thing you want to do for your daughter, Mr. Genovese. I can do that, easy as snapping my fingers. But I think you want to hear how my deals work."

Leaning forward a bit, he held his hands palm up side by side, like the balances of a scale.

"Everything I do requires energy, obviously. It doesn't come directly from me, but from my employers in Facade. The main reason I'm here is that my employers want to diversify their power base to give themselves better footing in the inner machinations of Under the Hill.

But we also don't want to give up raw power in exchange for versatility. To that end, when I make a deal, the client must relinquish something that they value at least as much as the thing they are requesting."

From there Taliesen explained exactly the types of things that he could accept as payment, in descending order of value: emotions, memories, years of servitude to Facade, powers, talents and skills, lifespan. That he didn't deal in souls, because those were worthless in Under the Hill.

"Payment is flexible and completely up front. There are no hidden fees, no interest. There are no refunds, so be certain that you want to make the deal before you go through with it. One deal per customer, for that same reason."

He paused, thinking if there was anything else he needed to note.

"If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. Now, what are you thinking about offering?"

Angelo had come into the deal with a pretty good idea of what he was willing to give up. Not emotions. Not memories--those were too precious. But he knew what to trade, knew what he had to offer that would interest him.

"I am a half-reaper," Angelo said. "I have a variety of powers and abilities that come with that. Considering that Shay's issues come from her own species, sacrificing my species seems poetic." Simple enough. "Do you need to know? I have to say I'm honestly not really sure what's my species abilities and what's just me, but the big one is that I can push souls on to the afterlife... I read as dead for most powers, so I'm immune to all those emotional manipulation auras everyone's got. I can sense death, and dead things... Regeneration seems to be tied in, since I seem to get energy for ferrying people."

He didn't mention his imperceptibility. Of all his powers, that was the oldest, having manifested before he began ferrying souls by almost a decade, and a part of him hoped it wasn't quite the same thing. That it was him, not his reaper nature.

"And..." Angelo paused, tapping his fingers on the table. "If everything works out well, I'll vouch for you with people. I have enough clout on the island that hearing I made a deal will encourage people, and I'll talk about it openly enough after a few weeks. I don't want to distract from the big day, even if I want her to be healthy for her honeymoon."

"Those are some interesting powers you're willing to give up. And I like the poetic beauty in it. Parents giving up their life for their children's is, well, one of the oldest tropes. Not quite the same thing here, but the sentiment..."

Taliesen considered for a moment, feeling the magic in his fingertips. Yes, this would work.

"that sounds like it would be fine. I'll take your status as a half-Reaper, and all the good you could do with those abilities. And in return, your daughter's health problems will fade until they are no longer an issue. Not all at once, so she won't immediately notice, as you want yes?"

Taliesen wanted Angelo to confirm verbally that this was the deal they were making. He sat quietly, inspecting his hand as if it held some answer invisible to all but him.

It was so simple, so clearly laid out. Say yes, agree to the deal, and his powers would be gone. Angelo's stomach lurched at the simplicity of it, of just giving away something that was such an important, fundamental part of himself. Would he still be the same person, with it gone?

But the doubts didn't linger long. Angelo had learned not to dwell on things. He'd learned not to get caught up in the past, or what ifs. He was good at making snap decisions, for good or for ill, and all he really had to do was think about Shay--about the nightmares, about the despair, about when she'd told him that she was getting married now and was going to start having kids now because there probably wasn't going to be a later.

Angelo wanted there to be a later.

"Yes," Angelo said, nodding to punctuate the point. "What do I have to do to seal the deal? A contract?" He sort of assumed there would be something written, possibly summoned up with a wave of Taliesen's hand and signed in blood. That was normally how that sort of thing went.

Taliesen let his fangs show abit more through his smile and he reached out his hand towards Angelo.

"Nothing so formal, but maybe just as dramatic. We simply..." cold, blue-green flames sprang to life around Taliesen's hand as he finished his sentence. "...shake on it."

Angelo took his hand and the flames danced across their combined grip for a moment. When they broke contact, things were... different for the officer. He would feel the change immediately, and Taliesen played with the flames in his hand briefly before closing his fist and snuffing them out. Sending his payment down to Facade for processing.

"And that's it. Do you have any further questions?"

Of course he had fangs. Of course. Because it couldn't be a shady demonic deal--even if they were actually a fae--without sharp teeth.

"Just as dramatic," Angelo confirmed, reaching out and giving a firm handshake.

The most obvious change was almost immediate. One minute he was constantly aware of the vampire four tables back, eating his breakfast with a friend, and the next he simple wasn't. Angelo had to physically turn, glancing back over his shoulder to make sure that hadn't vanished. They were still there, but Angelo could no longer feel them.

"Alright," Angelo said. "That's done. And no, no questions. But I have a wedding to get to, and I have your number if anything comes up."

Angelo stood up, dropping the payment for his food on the table. He had places to go and people to see, and while it had been nice that Taliesen came out on such short notice, he wasn't stupid enough to believe it was anything other than business.

"I'll see you around."
