Flash Mob at the Morgue

It was an average night in the city, people went about their nightly bussiness wether of the legal persuasion, or less legal. No matter how pristine people liked to showcase their city as, there was always the presence of those who prove that every city in existence is anything but pristine, no matter how much people may try to allude otherwise. Case in point, city officials would have you believe that the morgue located in the apartment building underneath a highway overpass was just that, an old morgue shut down a few years ago due to sanitation issues. And indeed, many people including many of those same city officials, do in fact believe that, simply ignoring the smoke that can sometimes be seen from its chimney. It could happen for any number of reasons, maybe some bum or squatter is just keeping warm at night, not really worth looking into for most. But the criminal underground is rarely so obvious as that. For those who pay attention to their sources, this place is supposedly the center of a black market organ dealer. That alone wouldn't be enough to bring even the attention of the observant, there were plenty other high profile organ harvestors out there.

The catch? Many have shown to be going out of bussiness, and some of them are top providers, all thanks to this little morgue. Most organ traders could only take so many clients at a time, as they spend weeks, sometimes days, looking for a good "donor". But this place has the kind of buyer traffic you'd expect from a candy store. Most places could provide a few dozen organs a month, but this place was churning them out like they were going out of style. Indeed with the amount of organs being sold so consistently and in such quantities, one could assume the city had an alarming epidemic of missing peoples reports and organ thefts. But there weren't. In fact, the rate of missing peoples and organ theft reports have not significantly risen at all since it came to bussiness. This "closed morgue" was providing black market organs of decent quality, in great quantities, almost on demand, at cheaper prices than the grand majority of its competition, and at no increase in donor victims. None of it added up.

If anyone did notice, and decided to investigate, they would find that the morgue was boarded up and all the doors locked. However, some of the boards on the windows were loose enough that someone could possibly make their way in with some effort. Inside they would find the majority of the place dusty, molded, or some combination of the two, with various pieces of furniture left behind when it was closed. Down some stairs leading to the morgue furnaces, one would come to a heavy wood door, one with a sliding metal viewing slit near the top. The door would be locked by what might sound like numerous locks. On the other side, noises and voices could be heard.

Felix might've been known by most people as a detective with a gentle demeanor. Nobody thought Felix was a person that could ever be up to anything. That was where they were mistaken. In the gutters and dark corners of the Underground, Felix had a bit of a reputation as a crooked cop. They said he could be bought out, for the right price.

That might have held some truth, but they'd be wrong. Felix cared little for money or power. What he cared about was results. As highly as he thought of the PD, he knew they'd never catch the crafty crooks when they were bound by so much red tape. Felix needed to meet them on the same playing field, sink down at their level. He could weed out the unsavory ones this way and put a more permanent dent on the crime rate.

Felix kept a close ear to the ground. He'd noticed the sudden rampant increase of cannibalism after they found a woman dead in her apartment, choking on entrails, with her fridge hiding more and more body parts. When his eyes opened to the occurrences, he started noticing off things. Increase in cannibalistic activities, and things like that. He hung around with the Rosales gang members — mooks, who lived in the Underground and heard everything first hand. They talked about organ donors, some claiming it was a group, others saying it was just one man. Whatever it was, they all agreed they came from the old morgue.

So that was where he went. Felix approached the old morgue late at night dressed up like a gang member rather than a police officer. Upon arrival, the door was locked, but there was smoke coming out from the chimney. There had to be people here. He hoped they weren't squatters. He pried off the wooden boards covering the window. He didn't need to pry a lot, considering he was rather thin, and slipped through two of them easily. Nothing. He needed to look for more.

Felix investigated the front area, which held nothing of import, though he scrunched his nose at the thick, growing mold. He wanted to check for prints, but it was too dark. He was at a severe disadvantage. That was why he brought flares and flash grenades. He looked around and found a staircase leading down.

He could hear voices beyond. Well, that was promising. Felix shook off his jitters and mentally prepared for his role: Rosales Gang. Not detective. Gang member. He straightened his posture and crossed his arms, knocking on the door. "Hey. Klaus Rosales sent me here to ask about body parts, see if you can hook him up with a few. Know anything about that?"

The metal slit to the door opened and showed a pair of green emerald eyes, wearing a fedora and some kind of high-tech gasmask.

"You're a day early, I don't have them ready yet, I'm backed up on orders as it is. You can tell Klaus that if he's really so eager for those livers he can either wait another day, like we agreed, or he can cull some of that rampant alcoholism in his boys. And for god-sake, use the damn passwords I give, I swear if you show up again without the password, i'll just shoot you, I won't even bother talking to you, just blam, dead." The man said, or at least thats what one could assume, the gas mask must have a voice synthesizer in it, because the voice that came out was digitally distorted.

"You're lucky I met you in our first meeting or else I would have blown you away the first time you-....wait a minute, you're not the usual guy! What the hell happened to the other guy?"

There was a person, and a response! Felix stood behind the door, trying to hide his shock that his stupid plan worked. He listened as he talked, mistaking him for someone else, taking this all in. So he did supply bodies. Those guys didn't lie.

This plan was going so well...

And then he was caught. Of course. Nothing ever went smoothly with this lifestyle. Felix was in high alert, ready for a chase or a fight, but he didn't want to have to resort to that before they could talk. Felix didn't believe in shoot first, ask questions later. There was a power to diplomacy that few people appreciated.

"Wait, hold on!" Felix put a hand to the door, ready to push it open should the guy try to slam it on him. His free hand reflexively reached for the pistol in his holster. Despite his nerves being on fire, his face was calm, and it was brought down to its usual soothing level. "Hold on, let me talk, please. I didn't lie about being a gang member, but I wasn't the guy he sent here. I just wanted to talk, and that ruse was the easiest way to get you out. I heard about you in the gang. My name's Felix Verma... Detective Verma of the PD. I hear you're a man with an ear to the ground and friends in high, dangerous places. I can exchange a few favors for some answers, if you get my drift."

Felix fixed his green eyes on the man through the slit in the door, giving the man (apparently also called Felix) a stern look in silence for about a minute. During that minute shuffling and scraping could be heard on the other side of the door. The Felix at the door kept his magnum aimed at the Detective, keeping it hidden behind the door.

"Come inside, hands where I can see them." Felix said, revealing the very big hand cannon of a magnum in his hand. Leading in the detective, he would see a gourney with a body on top of it with the face covored up. In front of it were 3 other men all wearing the same outfit as the one from the door, a clean dress shirt and black vest with a black and white fedora, as well as that curious gas mask. All three sat in a chair with the same type of gun pointed at the detective.

"Now then, for the time being you can call us Flash Mob."

"I'll be asking the questions here, and you will answer them."

"You can start by giving us a reason not to simply blast you now and disappear."

"You can start by telling us what you mean exactly by 'favors'." They said, each one taking turns speaking, all speaking in the exact same distorted voice.

Felix went inside, hands raised as he was led in. He didn't fear the magnum pointed at him at all. Felix couldn't be fatally injured, and if these guys wanted to try, they were welcome to get hit in the face by divine providence. Even if providence didn't pull through, Felix welcomed any and all opportunities to get murdered and finally die. He nodded at the other guys, almost cocky, assured of his own safety.

"It's just smart," he replied when they asked for a reason not to get blasted. "I'm protected by my goddess. If any of you would like to murder me now, you're welcome to try, but that would probably hurt you more than me." It sounded like a threat, but they needed to use their heads. He wouldn't be this cocky if there wasn't a safety net to fall back on. His powers always pulled through no matter what. "You can shoot me and go through the lengthy process of covering it up, or we can work out a deal. I'm not unreasonable."

Which brought him to Flash Mob's next question. "I'm a cop," Felix said plainly. "A detective, even. I have access to the PD's case files and reports. I can make them go away when I want to. You can claim that it's unnecessary right now, that you've hidden yourselves well, but you're making ripples in the Underground that's impossible to not notice. I already sniffed out your base, Flash Mob, and it won't be long until another detective follows the trail and tracks you too, with an entire squad at their back. You can shoot me now, maybe even succeed in killing me, and go through the arduous process of relocating or... you can make a friend. I'll be a good friend if you are. Your choice."

The multiple identical men kept their guns trained on Felix as he spoke, listening to what he had to say.

"Oh great, another one of you godly ass-kissers."

"I have a habit of despising smug people."

"Who think they're above it all, untouchable."

"People who rely on some higher power to keep them from living and dying in the same dirt as the rest of us."

"I ain't lazy, i'd kill you and cover my tracks even if all it would do is spite you a little."

"As far as i'm concerned, we're all on the same rotten level."

"Anyone who thinks their higher than anybody else is resting on their own imaginary pedestal."

"I don't like people like you."

"I don't like your smug face."

"And your goddess can huff paint for all I care."

"Only one thing is gonna save your holy asshole."

"I ain't looking for a friend, i'm looking for profit."

"So either you spill the beans on what you're offering..."

"Or I spill your brains on the wall over there." They all said, simultaneously cocking their guns in perfect synch for emphasis.

Was this guy stupid?

There were a lot of threats happening here, but Felix couldn't help but be boggled at how massively stupid he was. Spill the beans on what he was offering. He already did. He just said it. But for someone that operated in the criminal world, he sure didn't understand euphemisms all that much. Felix's confusion was all over his face. He shut his eyes for a few seconds, resisting the urge to sigh.

"I just — did." Bite back the sarcasm, Verma. He looked at the guy flatly. "I can erase all of your records and any evidence of your business, because I am a detective, and detectives in the police station have access to them. That's what I'm offering."

Once Felix finished repeating what he said, all of the men let out the same chuckle at once.

"Oh I heard you, I just wanted to see if you were gonna keep trying to be a smug bastard about it. But you've shown you can change that attitude of yours when the situation demands, so congratulations, I now hate you slightly less." They all said at the same time.

"But, you still aren't speaking my language." One of them said, before the ones who were sitting got up and started circling around Felix.

"You're offering me anonymity, but it's something I've lived without before, out in the real world."

"What I'm looking for in this deal is one of two things, money, and power."

"If you aren't looking to spend a lot of cash, then the next best thing would be some dirt on your fellow officers."

"Something to twist their arms with if the need arises." They said. One of them walked over to a locked cabinet at the back of the room and retrieved a small number of folders before walking back.

"These folders have five names."

"Not very big ones, but bigger than your average thug."

"As a gesture of trust, I'll only ask for four names from you in return....don't esxpect that often."

"If you're really so loyal though, then I want $4,500."

"Oh, and if you could make me disappear too that would be swell. For added security."

"That's what I'm looking for detective, now are you willing to provide?"

Felix gave them a flat look. He didn't like being condescended to, but he would've handled it if it was a fair deal. This was the opposite of a fair deal.

"Let me get this straight... you're giving me five names of low level criminals in exchange for evidence against four officers, four grand, and making you disappear." He put his hands on his hips, thoroughly done with this. "Forget it! You're trying to twist my arm, see what you can take, but I have a CI and a degree of influence over the Rosales. I'm not desperate. I don't need this shit."

A flash of bright light flooded the room. When it subsided, Felix disappeared.

"I'm gonna give you a ten minute head start before the cops arrive, buddy. I hope you like moving, because you're going to do a lot of it soon."
