Tadashi had seen the ad on the board for a fishing challenge in this regalia tournament. It wasn't the most energetic activity so he'd had to convince Rhode that it was worthy of doing. Finally he had explained that it took a lot of discipline and care to wait patiently and then a burst of energy to reel in a fish. Rhode had apparently decided it was enough. Ethan of course didn't mind it at all. Spending a day sitting there fishing with his friend sounded great. Plus maybe they'd get food out of it.

Tadashi wasn't an expert at fishing but he did like eating them so he had been sure to learn at least the basics of how to fish. He had accepted the challenge and arranged to meet his opponent out here at this fairly secluded lake early in the morning. The one at the school usually had too many people swimming lately and they would probably just scare off the fish.

He yawned as he sat there by the edge of the water leaning against the little cooler with waters and a lunch for Ethan, Rhode and himself inside. Ethan, a mousy looking boy about the same age as Tadashi and wearing clothes that seemed too big for him, sat next to Tadashi and leaned on him with his eyes closed. Leaning on a tree nearby stood Rhode, androgynous but clad in a full 'suit' of sparkling minerals and precious stones that made them look much like a knight in shining armor. Two fishing rods and a box of supplies sat next to him.

Fishing was not something either Ian, or by extension Sam, had any experience with. But Mr Wilson was adamant that it was a great bonding activity, and that if he had to put up with two young whippersnappers at each other's throats, then the least they could do was try it.

Sam had complained at first. Until the elderly regalia had explained the challenge, and pointed out that it was something new. Secretly the angry redhead actually got along better with the old man than he'd admit, so he didn't fight it much. Ian kinda looked forward to it. It was definitely something his dad would not have approved of a girl doing, and for some reason the boots Mr Wilson told him to wear made him feel more like a boy.

They made it to the lake easily enough, with some fishing rods and a bucket of bait, which Ian was carrying to avoid argument. He was slightly nervous when he saw the other the guys they'd be fishing with. But at least they were people who hadn't known him before - he wouldn't need to give some awkward explanations... and the other guy had two regalia so he wouldn't feel weird being a third person.

Sam spoke up first, more to Mr Wilson than the others, still somewhat unused to introductions. "So, old man, think we can kick these guy's asses with fish?" "Introduce yourself first you little varmint, no need to be rude." "Oh. I'm Sam. The grumpy one is Mr Wilson," Sam rolled his eyes at this, "And the little fre-" Mr Wilson cut him off there, not wanting him to cross the line between grumpy and asshole when there was a day of fishing to be had. "Fine. Ian. And who are you guys?"

Tadashi nudged Ethan awake as the others approached. Apparently the boy had fallen asleep while they waited. They both stood up looking fairly sleepy and Ethan was rubbing his eyes.

"Tadashi Yoshimori, nice to meet you all," he said as he did a small bow. "This is Ethan and Rhode." For his part Ethan gave a quick little "hi" and a wave before leaning against Tadashi and struggling not to fall back asleep. In his mind it was far to early to be out and about.

Rhode however was much more enthusiastic. "Good morning you three. I hope you're ready to catch some fish because we sure are." With that they strode forward to offer a handshake, though their hand was just as covered by polished minerals as the rest of them. After a pause Tadashi also shuffled forward, with Ethan sticking right by him, to offer a handshake to all of them too.

"So are we competing for the biggest fish or the most caught or what?"

Ian felt awkward and small around all these guys. It didn't help that he couldn't shake hands because her was holding all this fishing stuff. He kinda shuffled awkwardly, mumbling, "I'd shake hands, but umm..." For once, he was glad Sam was more bold and outgoing - there was no need for them to pay any attention to him.

At first Sam didn't take the offered hand either, shuffling through his poor memory to try and figure out what he was supposed to do. Then the regalis nudged him, hard, with an elbow, and muttered, "Are you just going to stand there or shake his hand? Kids these days."

That was enough of a reminder, and he did shake everyone's hands. "I am ready for the fish, yes." Mr. Wilson also gave each of them a firm handshake, maybe a little firmer than necessary.

Sam hadn't actually decided what they would fish for, but then he'd been convinced by Mr Wilson - It wasn't a challenge he'd have chosen in the first place. He didn't want to be at this forever so, "We should try to catch the biggest."

The regalis for his part seemed happy with this decision, rubbing his hands together, though he still looked like an old grouch. "All right boys. Let's see if you can impress me."

Tadashi nodded when he saw Ian's hands were full. "Oh, sorry. My bad," he said with a small smile and then moved on to shake the other hands. Whe it came to Mr. Wilson's shake he squinted a little bit at the extra strength handshake and slowly increased his own grip to match. Tadashi's gloved hands were deceptively strong despite his age. Ethan barely shook hands before pulling his hand back. Rhode didn't seem to notice the firmness of the handshake at all as his hand was entirely covered in a layer of hardened minerals.

"Sure, the biggest fish sounds like a good way to do it. Maybe we go for a couple hours and see what we catch. Good luck you guys," Tadashi confirmed and then smiled at Ian, Sam and Mr. Wilson. Now he just had to pick a good spot to fish from. Rhode was going to stand by to help but it was going to be all up to Tadashi to actually make the decisions. Ethan was just there because he wanted to stay by Tadashi.

The two groups began to separate out a bit to find their spots. Close enough to compare their caches but far enough that there wouldn't be any issues with lines crossing or getting tangled together.

"A couple hours? That's so long! Does it really take a couple hours to catch a fish?" Of course Sam would be complaining about something he'd agreed to. The impatient boy had no sense of time. But it was a serious question too. How was he supposed to know what actually went into fishing? As far as he was concerned, you waved a stick around until you hit a fish with it. Like a magic wand... with worms on the end.

"Quit yer whinging, boy, we need to catch a large fish now, don't we?" It was not a question. Mr Wilson gestured to the two to follow him, taking control because he knew what he was doing. Ian had no problem with this. Secretly holding back a smile from seeing someone actually standing up to Sam, even if he was too nervous to do it himself.

For all his complaints, Sam seemed to enjoy it too. Mr Wilson was like the father he'd never had, though he wasn't about to admit that to anyone. They were all fairly quiet for a bit, looking for the perfect spot. Sam and Ian slipping into a telepathic conversation, and Mr Wilson grunting and shaking his head until he found a spot he apparently liked.

"All right you red-headed varmint. Grab a pole and let me show you how it's done. Might catch something good if we used that hair of yours for bait. Har har har."

Tadashi chuckled a little at the impatience. Clearly the boy wasn't used to hunting for food. You couldn't catch anything without patience. He didn't poke fun at him for it- not everyone was suited for patiently waiting to catch your prey. And it would have been mean.

Tadashi looked around and found a nice shady area near the edge of the pond with a couple nice spots on the ground to sit on. "Have you ever held a worm before Ethan?" Even as he asked the question he had already guessed the answer. It really didn't seem like something the boy had done. Ethan shook his head and confirmed Tadashi's suspicions.

"Here," Rhode said in a friendly tone as he picked up the two fishing poles, "I'll get these ready if you help Ethan pick out his bait Tadashi." Ethan looked expectantly as Tadashi reached into the small carton they had put the worms in and pulled out a nice fat one in his gloved fingers. "There we got Ethan, this one should work," he giggled as he put it in the other boy's hand and it started to wiggle around.

Ethan also giggled at the wiggly worm's movements and the two of them nearly forgot about the fishing poles until Rhode carefully held out the hook to slide the worm onto. Ethan put the bait on, only hesitating for a moment as he looked for a smile and nod from Tadashi.

Tadashi looked at their container of worms and realized they had more than he expected. "Hey," he called out towards the other group, "if you run out of bait you can use some of ours."
